August 21, 200816 yr Welcome aboard, urbanlovin! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 22, 200816 yr why thank you :-D And more importantly a new member who understand the search function! (or you've been lurking for a while)
August 25, 200816 yr In regard to the new dormitories on Euclid... Has there been any discussion of a programming or green space on top of these dorms? It seems like it will have a fairly large footprint, and I can't imagine a cooler space for the students to have mixers, study or host events. Wouldn't this be the icing on the cake for such a project which is focused on increasing CSU's residential population and it's overall impact on the city? I just see this being a huge asset that probably not many schools in Ohio can offer. I would live on campus if I had a roof top programming space.
August 25, 200816 yr Yeah, they really need something to "engage" future students. (sorry, couldn't resist)
August 25, 200816 yr Sorry Pope, not everyone can afford CWRU. I'm still "affording" it to this day! It's an investment. Just like we don't have dorms, we have resident halls.
August 27, 200816 yr ^there are some on this page: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2008/081408/index.php
October 15, 200816 yr So would anyone happen to know what might be going on at the lawn at the corner of chester and 18th street. Theres a crew of about 5 out there digging trenches and laying 2x4's with 3 cement blocks already in place. Good thing im paying more attention to whats going on outside than whats happening in class
October 15, 200816 yr I know this has been discussed before but... what an ugly, ugly thing. You go to art museums, you see busts of emporers where the sculptor made subtle points about them through the expressions on their faces. Then there's this thing. Cultural commentary by Pee Wee Herman. I either sound like a philistine or an elitist here, or somehow both, but I cannot condone the prominent display of this item. I can just hear myself explaining it to visitors "See, it's a politician, and he's yappin, and he's got this shovel, see... OK let's go look at the free stamp. That one you'll really like."
October 15, 200816 yr "You go to art museums, you see busts of emporers where the sculptor made subtle points about them through the expressions on their faces." Riiiight: Not that "The Politician" is in the same ranks as one of the most politically charged works of art in history, but just because something isn't "subtle" doesn't make it any less valid. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 15, 200816 yr A good summary here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernica_(painting) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 15, 200816 yr The band Brand New has a song entitled Guernica, one of my favorites, and until today I was unaware of the significance behind the song's title.
October 15, 200816 yr And with that, let's get back on topic :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 15, 200816 yr I totally disagree. This is one of my favorite public art pieces in Cleveland. I will fight anyone to the death who tries to get rid of it.
October 15, 200816 yr I totally disagree. This is one of my favorite public art pieces in Cleveland. I will fight anyone to the death who tries to get rid of it. Ooooohhh Fight..Fight..Fight The BX Vs. the UES. My [glow=green,2,300]money [/glow] is on Jpoptart!
October 15, 200816 yr You know what's going to be awesome? 4 construction cranes on campus at once! Student Center College of Education Z Garage E. 24th Street Student Housing
October 15, 200816 yr You know what's going to be awesome? 4 construction cranes on campus at once! Student Center College of Education Z Garage E. 24th Street Student Housing Well, 3 at once. The new dorm goes where the bookstore is, and they won't be able to clear away the bookstore until after the one in the new student center is open. At least that was my understanding of the 24th st housing. Maybe it will fit between the bookstore and the freeway? If so, what goes where the bookstore is now? I totally disagree. This is one of my favorite public art pieces in Cleveland. I will fight anyone to the death who tries to get rid of it. Your opinion is as good as mine. And I know little of art, so yours is probably better. But could you imagine that thing chasing you at night? I can't get past that initial fight-or-flight reaction to it.
October 15, 200816 yr Your opinion is as good as mine. And I know little of art, so yours is probably better. But could you imagine that thing chasing you at night? I can't get past that initial fight-or-flight reaction to it. Hahaha! Hilarious. :) When you put it THAT way .. Art is totally a subjective thing. And I can understand why most people would hate it. It's monstrous, it's gaudy, it's .. weird. But that describes a lot of things I love. And if it disappeared, it would be a sad, sad day in JPop Land.
October 16, 200816 yr I believe the new residence halls are slated to break ground in January. There is a second phase that would be built in place of the bookstore. RE: Z Lot - these were from City Planning review a few months back.
October 16, 200816 yr Not bad for a parking deck. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 16, 200816 yr Are those solar panels on the top??? They appear to be facing South so it looks to me like they are.
October 16, 200816 yr there will be street level activization when the transit center is built though...
October 16, 200816 yr Author Are those solar panels on the top??? They appear to be facing South so it looks to me like they are. oooh....i'd like to see some solar panels on a parking garage or transit center. i recently learned that an upcoming transit center being planned by Akron Metro Transit will feature the largest solar array in the entire state.
October 16, 200816 yr there will be street level activization when the transit center is built though... Nice....
October 16, 200816 yr thank you for those pictures i looked all over for them but i found nothing lol. the garage looks really nicee
October 20, 200816 yr I thought they'd already "broken ground," but I guess demo doesn't count. From Crain's: CSU starts building $55M student center 4:30 am, October 20, 2008 Cleveland State University broke ground on its $55 million, 138,000-square-foot student center. The new center, which will serve as the new front door to the downtown campus, will house the university bookstore, a pub, dining hall, computer lounge, game room, and various student services. Construction is slated for completion in spring 2010.
October 20, 200816 yr Correct. I drove past today and they were starting with the infrastructure work.
October 30, 200816 yr It looks like work has begun on University Lofts. I saw those hanging construction lights on the upper floors and they also have a Marous banner on the building. I was afraid that this project was a victim of the credit crisis.
October 30, 200816 yr Ironic that you noticed that and posted. I noticed a Marous van outside the building today too and was wondering if they were starting work. I'm assuming that you mean they've begun the reonvation of the "Barnes and Noble" building and the Brothers Printing building? It didn't seem like they were starting the new building on the empty lot.
October 30, 200816 yr After further research, maybe this has to do with the 2010 Euclid building getting awarded a ~$400k tax credit a few weeks back. Link: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,15883.msg334355.html#msg334355 The 2020 Euclid building was already awarded a $1.4M credit back in January. October 30, 200816 yr ^^ I was referring to Barnes and Noble building. I'm real glad this is finally starting, I think it's tacky how only part of the building facade was cleaned and the rest is filthy.
October 30, 200816 yr Seems very unlikely that the new construction portion of this project would be going forward at this point. Great to hear that the upper floors are being worked on. We have a lot of "upper floors" downtown that could support a lot of new residents.
