More lighting on 13th is a great idea.  Downtown is way, way behind on lighting.

I can't help thinking that if you're taking a bus from E13th to CSU campus, you better be in a wheelchair.  That's two blocks.  And if the immediate Playhouse Square area is as dangerous as we're implying here, it sounds like a solve-it-by-noon crisis for this city.  I mean, Parkview only has so many doors, and it's not like the residents have gun turrets sticking out everywhere.  I understand it's the projects but its not Castlevania.  Maybe CSU can patrol the area if CPD chooses otherwise.  It shouldn't take more than a couple cops to keep one building from spoiling the entire east end of downtown.

That stretch of 13th street certainly is pretty bleak.  I wonder if this would mean a reno of the Middough bldg's ground floor involving windows or some other signs of life.  In any case, it can't be anything but good to move this population from its current island north of Chester into PHS.

i agree this stretch is bleak, but i don't think it is from lack of lights.  when the lights are working, this is a very bright section.  i think the concern is more over lack of anything at street level (no eyes or activities), a rather narrow right of way boxed in by blank walls, and some of the pedestrians that are using this corridor

http://clevelandplanner.blogspot.com/2010/01/goodbye-best-steak-and-gyro-1910-euclid.html

It appears permits have been filed with the City of Cleveland to have the 1910 Euclid Avenue (formerly known as Best Steak and Gyro) demolished to create some sort of axis for Cleveland State University "in direct relation to Corlett Plaza (which was demoed recently as well).

This area is not part of the CSU Campus or Master Plan, but is actually the west block of CollegeTown. According to the Master Plan, the demo of this building will allow for the construction of a new building, presumedly housing of some sorts, and have a direct connection, likely pedestrian related (see below), to the Wolstein Center. A date for demolition is not know at this time.

You can see the plans for the walkway here, across from the farmers market...

In other news, work continues on the building next to this walkway, 1938 Euclid.  Storefront glass went up last week.  I will try to get pictures to post next time I am there.

This is a neat development.  The design of the farmers market is ... odd but at least there's something going on.

Nice avatar musky.

Well, I was at the site today, but forgot to bring my camera to get pictures of the new storefronts, but they are looking good.  Here is a plan for the plaza/walkway which will replace 1910 Euclid.

HAHA, look how even in the rendering the Brothers Printing building tile is all dirty and gritty, thats accuracy if i ever saw it

What's with the 70s theme in this area?  The colors, shapes, etc...

Hopefully the real thing looks better than the rendering.  And the shadows are weird.  They have the sun positioned in West/Northwest.  Not a position the sun would take in Northeast Ohio.  I guess they just wanted to light up the side of the building.

It's OK.  I've seen worse recently, but that says more about "recently" than it does about this rendering.  I wonder what to make of that booth-thing toward the front.  What is that for?

I believe it will house mechanicals and controls for lights, irrigation, etc.  My first thought was that it should not be right on Euclid, but I think they were going for something with mass along the sidewalk (hence the archway next to the building), so that the plaza is not a gap among the row of buildings.

Where in the hell did those come from !!! Sprouting like weeds!

One of these days I won't forget my camera and I'll get a few pictures of the new dorms from inside Viking Hall.

Even though the new student center is a HUGE improvement over the old one, I still think they could've done better on the design of it. We'll see what happens when it opens though.

Damn those went up quick. That's going to bring alot of needed activity to that area. More feets on the streets. Nice.

I can't say enough how having more college students living downtown is a great thing in so many ways.  Glad Cleveland State is doing all of this.

Hopefully this will keep happening.  Nothing could be more important than college kids living downtown. I'd take 1,000 of them anyday before wasting more money and time on an aquarium etc.

I have noticed that CSU is advertising heavy out-of-state.  Hopefully we'll keep attracting out of town collegiates!

Well, we have our first tenant signed to a lease - Jimmy John's will take half of the Euclid frontage.  In the meantime, the first floor new storefront glass is in.

This is the second floor space, windows in the back of the building.  This was a cinder block wall and we had the windows put in for the extra light.

Nice, thanks for the update.

Isn't their a Jimmy John's on lower Euclid? If so, does that one move to this site? Will we be left with another vacancy?

There is and it is not moving, this is another location.

^I think that's Excellent news!  This shows that downtown establishments can survive and branch out!

Oh god, when the Jimmy Johns in Coventry opened, that became the new late night drunken munchies at Case.

Love to read more, but that purple text on a brown background makes me want to gouge my eyes out...

^Thanks, good to know. I'll change that for future posts.

I heard from an employee @ CSU's Office of the University Architect at a recent Design Review meeting @ CLV City Hall that CSU has created a master plan for street furniture and lighting that is awaiting implementation.  The plan includes bicycle parking, light poles, benches, and other such functional infrastructure.  Has anyone heard anything more about this?

^ yeah, i'd like to see any renderings or examples of that stuff too. glad to hear this.

thx for the update photos. big yay for euclid commons. student center boo.

The CSU student Center looks just like UCincinnati's. It brings back fond memories of cheap chain chinese food, Gold Star Chili and watching 2 dollar movies at the theater -- all inside :)

We really could use a Skyline or a Gold Star at CSU.  I'd be happy with anything name brand, besides Subway.

One sign I saw in Viking Hall claims there will be a Uno Chicago Grill opening in the new UC.

Yeah there is going to be an Uno Chicago Grill

I think a Quiznos too.

The student center fits its surroundings very nicely in that picture.  And for once, that's the last thing I wanted.  The surroundings are crud.  But they're improving.  I do like the education building, which seems to flow nicely with Fenn tower.

And you have to see those new dorms in person to really get a feel for the scope.  This is an entire neighborhood, as dense and urban as you could ever want, going up where there was only surface parking last year.  You asked for it.  You got it.  I can't believe this isn't a bigger story.  There's about to be a new population of young people downtown, showing up all at once.  This is the best news we've had in years.

^ Exactly.

There are 3 things that are going to re-shape (if you will) Cleveland.

Playhouse Square.

Cleveland State University.

University Circle.

The first two are gradually becoming more symbiotic than ever before and could/will become (IMHO) a bona fide CBD version of University Circle (sans major museums).

Anecdotally, I know some who would've gone to BGSU or KSU, etc. etc. that instead are now staying home to attend CSU and live downtown.

According to the Cleveland Stater, CSU has dropped its plans to move its art department to East 13th. Apparently the building needed quite a bit of work and the owner wouldn't lower the price enough. I couldn't find a link online, I'll try and post the article when I find it.

Interesting... maybe this brings new life to the art building on Euclid concept, which I was pretty fond of before they dropped it.

Your confusing 2 different things here.

Thanks, MayDay!  I'm liking the Eduction Building a lot.  Not too flashy, but good transparency in the facade and a nice little overhang over the sidewalk to provide some relief from precipitation to passersby.  That student center could be a real dog though.  We'll see when it's finished.

Looks pretty good!  I need to make a point to head over that way and check it out in person.  I can only imagine the benefit to downtown (and to the University) if CSU became a full fledged residential campus.

Oops... what am I missing?  I remember plans for a long building between the law school and 21st, which would have had studio space fronting Euclid, and which would also have housed the theater dept.  And I thought that had been scuttled in conjunction with the planned move to PHS.

I agree 100%!  This will no doubt help stimulate the downtown economy.  I don't know if it's too soon to say that we might see some new shops opening up along Euclid to meet some of the new demand, but I don't see why that wouldn't happen.

Great Stuff!!

This stretch of Euclid is indeed also a part of the Euclid Avenue Retail Plan, work is being done.

As with everything else, youve rather simplified it.  There is the move of CSU performances to Allen, and then the Art and Theatre department, which was trying to move to E13th (which was the more recent development).  The possibility of a new center on Euclid isnt necessarly scuttled (but supposedly on the back burner), but thats related more to the Allan partnership than the E13th project.      http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/01/cleveland_state_university_art.html
