July 23, 201212 yr So why did they get rid of a story, reducing it from five stories to four? It was always planned to be four. If you look at the rending, this is the building on the left, the westernmost building. Only the center building is planned to be five, with street level retail.

July 23, 201212 yr The center building which is to be 5 stories is under construction and the elevator shaft is visible on the right side of the photo above. (Next to the green CSU banner.) I haven't been by there in a couple weeks, but the steel framing for the ground floor was finished or close to it then.

July 27, 201212 yr The Wolfe Music building has been accepted as a landmark by the Landmarks commission, and is awaiting council approval.
July 27, 201212 yr Thank you, but it was with the help of Kathleen Crowther and all the staff at CRS, Councilman Johnson, and my associates in SLPA (now renamed City Beautiful, an organization that will address planning, preservation, and design issues in Cleveland) that allowed us to accomplish this. Although its fate is not yest secured, its landmark status will mean continued public input when CSU goes to the next step, request for facadectomy (they have expressed their interest in this outcome).

But yes that is the building we are discussing. The closest looking building I can think of is the alescis building, but still they have completely different architectural features.

Both facades are white terra cotta. I think that's what gives them such a similar feel too me. The color and texturing. I'm not generally a fan of preservation for preservation's sake and this situation stinks of it. Regardless, I hope CSU gets it done right and it doesn't look like the Horseshoe welcome center with a new structure wrapped around the old. Whether that means razing it or keeping the facade.
July 28, 201212 yr ^I agree with some of that. My first choice would be to see the building survive and repurposed with CSU's project only filling the Euclid frontage to its east. Or at the very least, the portion of the new project to the west of building should be distinct enough from the rest to avoid the Stanley Block treatment. I'm definitely not a fan of a superficial facade preservation, though, where it becomes just a random feature on a large new building. I know this info is in this thread somewhere, but does CSU now control the whole block, including the Rascal House and adjacent parking lot?
July 28, 201212 yr What I can see is that Cleveland State owns the building, Rascal house owns that small parking lot on Euclid next to their building. The rascal house building is owned by Frangos and the rest is owned by the State of Ohio?
July 28, 201212 yr Peabody's behind rascal house would also be a property needed to build on the entire block, and the rascal house is owned by the brother of USA Parking Frango. I don't know why its holding up progress, I think purposely leaving a building vacant for two decades because of on again, off again plans to demolish as holding back progress. Kinkos had a good business there, but CSU after buying the building offered them a year rent free to break the lease and have them out after that year. Back in the 90's, this was going to be the site of a new bookstore. CSU left it vacant then when those plans fell through, and allowed it to decay to the state it is in now. Besides, the Health Professions building could easily fit on the footprint of Viking Hall with full buildout to the street. It could be a nice corner building that wraps down 22nd and onto Prospect. Instead the building they will build will sit on the middle of the property like the business building and have a nice useless grass strip in front and to the sides, and take out two healthy businesses. What a loss Peabody's would be to an area attempting to be a college town.
July 29, 201212 yr ^Totally agree. I don't CSU's obsession with maximizing Euclid frontage. There's plenty of room to build without demolishing Wolf Music Bldg. If it means no setback/useless lawn, so much the better. Thanks for all your hard work with this effort.

July 30, 201212 yr The Langston buildings looks alot better in person in my opinion. They will definitely have a huge impact on that area. It was also nice to see that phases doesn't have to mean, we might never get around to the later phases, like it has in many cases. The middle building has framework of two floors already, and I saw that the easternmost group of buildings already has the foundation started. This project is definitely moving along, and fast!
