Anyone know where I can find the old master plan images from the 1960's for CSU?  I can't find them...

I own a few pictures as well.

sorry.  the moment has passed.  thanks for the tip, though!

what is going on in the parking lot in front of fenn tower (next to the new building on euclid)?

it looks like there is some sort of porous pavement being used.  are they continuing to experiment?  why isn't this publicized more?

edit:  comment moved to non-project related thread for CSU

I just read something about this today in one of the school rags - i forget which one and it was not very clear what they were doing or why. All it said was, well, basically the same thing they said over a year ago when the experiment was first started.

I will try to find the article.

Hurray for us!!!

(apologies if this posted elsewhere)

Cuyahoga projects included in state budget

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

Aaron Marshall

Columbus - Christmas came almost three weeks early for dozens of state-supported community projects in Cuyahoga County as state lawmakers unveiled a $1.78 billion capital budget bill on Tuesday that bulged with gifts of bricks and mortar.

The biggest presents placed under Cleveland's tree: $6.75 million in Cultural Facilities Commission projects, including $3 million for the Cleveland Museum of Art; $1.85 million for local parks projects, with $1 million for the East Bank Flats project and more than $17 million for Cleveland State, including $10 million for a new College of Education building....

I made some renderings of the wind spire this week. I will post them tomorrow.

^isn't this just the bill? It has yet to pass, correct?  I did hear that the governor was looking forward to spending liberally on his way out.

good point, Wim.  I guess we aren't allowed to "unwrap" these presents just yet...

You are correct.

And seeing as this capital bill is about a year late, it is likely Taft will want to get his name on it before he walks.

I made some renderings of the wind spire this week. I will post them tomorrow.

I just found out this morning that the propose 300ish foot tower will likely not be more then 200'. So I will have to redo the renderings. Anyway -

As promised:

nice!  I'm not sure exactly how these things will work, but I thought they were supposed to be mounted on existing buildings or built into new ones?  I didn't realize they'd be free standing.  I guess this is just the prototype (or just your impression of it), but I'm assuming they'll be versatile, so that they can be installed either as free-standing units or as attachments to buildings.  Imagine if the new student center had one of these sticking up a couple  hundred feet out of one of its corners...it would provide a nice new landmark piece!

It can be free standing or go on a building.

That is the location of where it will be built. I only took photos of the model and photoshopped them into the google images - so this is pretty much how they will look (just not so water-colory... unless you live in a fish bowl).

Was the height issue a cost issue or was it not functionally beneficial to be 100' higher?

For reference, the Hilton Garden Inn (a couple blocks west on Carnegie) is 11 stories, so probably under 150'.  The US Bank (Renaissance) Building at Playhouse Square is just over 200' (thanks clevelandskyscrapers.com!) and it's pretty visible from afar.  This should stand out quite nicely along the relatively less dense Carnegie and should be visible from several major freeways to boot!

It came down to what the boss liked and disliked.

He thinks it looks to brutalistic with the taller version.

Funny, huh?

Here is a shot of just the model:

Cool!  What is the structure made out of?  I guess I didn't expect the turbines to be on the exterior.  I was envisioning them being more tucked into the structure.  I'm no engineer, though!

That sure would make a fun and deadly waterslide.

Should have went taller, CSU needs more brutalistic structures on campus. More brutal middle fingers to the sky I say.

Anything new on the study for the Visual Arts Center, I thought we might hear something before the end of the year. Not much buzz about it. Does anyone know where it stands? The concept by WRL would change the face of Euclid Ave.

The planning study is complete. Everyone loves it. At this point, it is there and waiting for a funding mechanism: state capital, private donation, etc.

If this a go and we wait for state capital funding, there would likely be no action for about five years. We are kind of swamped right now as it is, so that is not necessarily a bad thing.

What is swamping you?

The department is horribly understaffed and new projects (not necessarily big ones) keep getting added.

There has been an ad for a new architect for months and only one response.

Two of the graduate assistants have left.

Just got some news about the wind tower - the president does not want it to go were we proposed. He thinks outsiders will make fun of the school. He said something to the effect of  "circumcision gone bad."

Stay tuned, plus I am working on some new renderings with a more precise looking model instead of just working with a clay model.

I thought that he was the biggest proponent of the thing?? I hope that he doesn't bury it somewhere behind the bunkers.

How can you only get one response for the architect position??? Are you premitted to advertise outside of the CSU webpage?

He is - but he does not want negative press.

Don't know, and yes. It's been advertised all over the country.

I'm surprised by his reluctance to put the tower out front.  It would be an awesome symbol of how CSU can be out front on something, and I doubt that a few phallic comments outweigh that.

Worried about people "making fun" of the university.  That's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in a while.

but it looks like screw csu!

C'mon, it's cutting edge technology people, we should flaunting tis kind of thing.

haha oh man, i dunno, that thing looks ridiculous just sitting there on the grass, i think it needs to be better incorporated into something else.  the only place i could see getting away with a giant off-white screw with propellers on grass sorta thing would be of course right near the science center.

"Worried about people "making fun" of the university.  That's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in a while."

I completely agree. Schwartz has done some great things at CSU, so this really seems out of character. Hell, they need to get Brokaw or one of the local agencies that does well with "cheeky" marketing.

I'm completely serious - I say play up the "CSU - Good for a Screw/CSU- You'll like our Screw" angle (I'm not a copywriter for obvious reasons, but you get my drift). This is Cleveland and self-deprecating humor is what we do best - got a burning river? Make it into the best damned pale ale on the planet! Make it an environmental/green technology festival! Now we have cutting-edge technology PLUS the sexy euphemisms!?! There is so much potential here! I'm telling you - can you imagine a festival centered around this? Screwfest?!? If that won't attract college students, I don't know what will! Maybe have Great Lakes Brewing co-sponsor an event (they're huge proponents of this kind of technology) - call it "Brews at the Screw" or "Brew and Screw"? Sure it sounds a little racy, but it would definitely get peoples' attention!

I agree with zaceman, it can't just be plopped on any site, though.

Before everyone gets all screwy (couldn't resist), the original renderings I did were just for the clay conceptual model. The two images are closer to what the tower will look like - but it still is not final.

Remember - it is not final.

Looks like a ribbed condom.

Maybe you could get Trojan to sponsor it?

Hence the "circumcision gone bad" comment...

That looks like something you might find hidden in a girlfriend's closet.

haha oh man, i dunno, that thing looks ridiculous just sitting there on the grass, i think it needs to be better incorporated into something else.

You can say the same thing about the Wolstein Center.  You'd think the Clinic built that thing behind those lawns and surface lots

But I will fully support more screws for the CSU community.

hmm that rendering looks even more intense haha... i bet if there were three in a row or a few next to each other it wouldnt look so penis-like

^a-ha good idea, putting up a row of them would certainly tone down the penile effect. heh.

btw this would hardly be the only phallic-ish college structure of its kind. i recall hearing the pierce ford dorm tower at wku was nicknamed the dean's last erection when it was built.

i am all for creatively screwing csu. let's do this. git'r done. etc.

^Hmmm

Well, it is going to get done. We're waiting for the outgoing or incoming gov to put their John Hancock (no pun intended) on the Capital Bill so the last piece of financing is done. And of course, the little question of site location.

For now, there will only be one as this is supposed to be an experiment of sorts.

There should be an observation deck at the top so people can look down at the screw moving beneath them.  Vertigo, yes!

They should push to make it look less like a tall narrow water tower.  If it looked more like a lighthouse on the top, there'd be a lot less smirking at the design.  Another thought maybe somehow tie it in with the Rock Hall Library thing and make it look more like a stacked record player holder like the Rock hall has.

^where's Cleveland Public Art when you need them?

The following are the latest preliminary concepts for the student center. These are not to scale and are only being used for space programing right now. Design element discussion will begin on the spring.

Exactly where are the College of Education and also the Student Center to be built????

The Student Center is being rebuilt at its current location

College of Education is going between Fenn Tower and Mather Mansion.

As preliminary as those are, it looks as though Gwathmey will disappoint once again.  What the hell is that pyramid in the center?  Take a look at U Cincinnatti's student center by Thom Mayne and see what we're missing out on.
