ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- James Brown, the legendary singer known as "the Godfather of Soul," is being treated for "severe pneumonia" at an Atlanta hospital, his agent told CNN Sunday.

Brown is one of the pioneers of soul music, famous for his frenetic dance moves and his piercing vocal style.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured "Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Copsidas said Brown's family was being notified of his death and that the cause was still uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," he said.

More at CNN

May the Evanston area of Cincinnati be graced with his spirit.  Long Live Mr. Brown & King Records.

His impact is one of the greatest single human achievements ever accomplished in music.

I just had to straighten out my niece who thought James Brown Was Rick James

sigh

I agree, I don't see the spirit of so many of the greats being carried on or much potential in what's emerged in the last 15 years.  The US had a huge run of producing original music which resounded across the globe since the beginning of recorded music, the airwaves today are atrocious, nobody seems to have a clue as to what the great music was and how terrible what is being produced today is by comparison.

Also RIP Bob Bosley, longtime Blue Wisp house bassist, who died this past weekend, presumably from lung cancer.  The existance of that club is responsible for so many kids from Cincinnati having some knowledge of what real jazz is, that's another native music on tourist-fueled life support thanks to the indifference of Clear Channel, BMI, American Idol, The View, The Real World, Lifetime for Women et al.

I was a major JB fan in college, but my enthusiasm about JB the man cooled the more I learned about him. Still, the music. The music...

wow, what a day for james brown.

not to mention what a great pic this is - unbelievable!

I went to the apollo.  I left my house 7:45 AM this morning it took me 35 minutes to get there!  It was a complete zoo.

One of his longtime drivers/aids lives in Euclid, I was trying to get him on CNN.  I think WOIO picked it up.

This crowd was bigger than Tito "El Queso Grande" Puente, Aaliyah's, and Biggies public viewings.

Aside from the blackout, I've never seen 125 completely shut down.

This crowd was bigger than Tito "El Queso Grande" Puente, Aaliyah's, and Biggies public viewings.

Well, compare JB's career to those you mentioned above. ;-)

i dk, tito had a pretty big and certainly a damn long career himself.

*i am still gawking at that pic.*

This crowd was bigger than Tito "El Queso Grande" Puente, Aaliyah's, and Biggies public viewings.

Well, compare JB's career to those you mentioned above. ;-)

Tito Puente is HUGE in the Northeast, Midwest & Florida and had a rather long career.  Tito was the Mambo King!  My grandfather broke down in tears at his death.  I also forgot to mention Celia Cruz, another big public funeral I went to that was just as moving.  Tito Puente and Celia Cruz are the equivalent to JB and Aretha Franklin.

MRNYC...It was unreal, I wish I had a camera at the time, but you were asked not to take pictures on the inside.

Lenox avenue and 125 were shut down.  The line to see JB wrapped up to 129 Street on both Frederick Douglas (8 Ave.) and Adam Clayton Powell (7 Ave.)

I didn't realize one of those that Mytwocents mentioned (that I in turned blew off) was Tito Puente.

Tito was a significant player in the percussion/drumming world.  Modern Latin (Jazz) Music wouldn't exist without him.

Still, I'm not surprised that JB's funeral, at the Apollo, drew a bigger crowd than those previous.

  • 12 years later...

CNN just did a blowout expose of the cover-up surrounding Brown's death the effort by his daughters to get the money, hide his body so there can't be an autopsy, and so much more:

This article takes over an hour to read.  It's pretty amazing.
