I like that first image.  I have a friend who is from Lexington.  Nice to see what it is like.

I have more cityscape images at my Flickr account from Lexington and other cities.

Nice shots!

I see the big "blue" building. :-D

uhh...I don't see any of the pics, all the links are dead (unless its my computer).  I actually wanted to check out a thread on KY, and I couldn't...damn  :|

Whatever happened to that funky little mall off of Vine(?) carved out of an old industrial building? Had a nice eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. Seemed to be struggling a bit last time I was there (1999).

It has art galleries, a high end restaurant, a nice drug store and some other smaller shops. It's still there and will get a boost when the adjacent 500's on the Main project is completed.

I agree with Hayward, that first shot is great.  Thanks for the pics.

Ah ha, I can see the images now!!!  That 'Center Court' project looks cool...nice and urban!

Looks like an absolutely gorgeous day!  Thanks so much for the beautiful thread!

South Hill

New townhouses and condos are being constructed in South Hill on what was derelict warehouses and small industrial buildings. These feature a small front yard, varying setbacks, a covered garage and alley, and a common park midblock.

Looking down Bolivar Street. CenterCourt is on the right, with South Hill Lofts and South Hill Station on the left. The former B&O Freight Station is straight ahead and will be demolished to make room for the Newtown Pike extension. To the right of that is a large 3-block clearing for the future Shelbourne Plaza development.

To the left is CenterCourt. The now-empty church visible at center-right will be razed for a new multi-story parking structure.

Rupp Arena

This vast parking lot is a proposed mixed-use community, park and ampitheater along Town Branch (to the right). The creek disappears soon after and travels under Vine Street.

I love these pictures of the city, but I also like your photography.  I don't know if its the sky you are getting into the shots or what, but your second to last parking lot shot is actually kind of cool, and I'm not sure why I like it so much.

Thanks! The last batch is kind of a rush because it was so cold and windy I refused to get out of my car for most of them. I have a batch from Cinci that shows many of the new developments along the river, and along Calhoun, but I haven't uploaded them because many are just plain awful (gray skies, cold, somewhat rainy...).

Very nice! I should need to visit sometime!

The thread parent is a gifted photographer.  Visit his website and you will see that the sky is an important part of some of his compositions.

The pic you reference has a good composition.  Note the light pole working with the the two high rises and Rupp Arena to center the photograph...it has a paired center, or two focal points.  Then the space is framed by the trees and such on the right and left, with more trees on the right, which helps tell the story in the text caption.

For me it is interesting to see these pix as I used to live in South Hill, in an old apartment on top of a small factory, not far from where these are taken.  The buildings on the left side of Bolivar Street used to be tobacco warehouse and a drying plant.  It was quite pungent when the tobacco was being brought in and the drying operations where underway.

The neighborhood itself was poor.  There was a day laborers exchange across the street from me, and tramps and scrap collectors would wander the area.  The church mentioned used to be an old black congregation as this part of South Hill had a small African American community.

I can see why Newtown Pike Extension is not being connected to Euclid after seeing these pix. Center Court would prevent that from happening.

Prior to CenterCourt was industrial buildings from Upper to South Broadway, which prevented much of a logical connection from Bolivar to Euclid (Winslow Ct. and Avenue of the Champions, whatever you want to call that mess). If the two-way system goes back into effect (prior to the 1970s), then the connection from Bolivar to Euclid is seamless; otherwise, one must loop down to the Service Building and back around.

Well, here is some news for those who like Lexington.

1,150 unit student housing for a warehouse district

Ellerslie Place infill project

CenterCourt is nearing completion. Main+Rose is seeing significant progress, along with Nunn Building Lofts and the Kimball House project. The Biological Pharmaceutical Complex Building broke ground last month with construction beginning this month; it will be the largest academic building in Kentucky and one of the largest in the nation! The Student Health Facility steel work is going up quite fast, and the dual-tower Patient Tower is in the beginning stages with prep work ongoing.

Here is a map of the new developments: Overlays

And now this...

'NBC Nightly News' to cover downtown

NBC Nightly News will be in Lexington Friday to do a segment on the city's downtown revitalization. The Lexington Downtown Development Authority received a call from Nightly News reporters who wanted to know "what was going on downtown". It was replied with, "We had a half-billion dollars in projects going on. Some are finished, some in progress."

The projects, he stated, "are targeting young professionals and baby boomers." In reply, NBC News stated, "We're coming."

Lexington, Kentucky featured on NBC Nightly News (~20:00). 20 new downtown development projects, located close to activity centers, are catering to the baby boomers and empty nesters.

(Meant to post it here)

Posted many new photographs of Lexington, Kentucky on my web-site article at UrbanUp. You can read more about it here and view the 100+ photographs already on the site. The site is still new and in its infancy, and much of the text was copied from articles that I wrote at other web-sites, but it's coming along!

Lexington, Kentucky

I am finally getting around to posting new photographs. Currently working on the site -- it currently dumps all buildings under Lexington, although they should be spreading out on the individual subpages (i.e. Downtown). And some of the photo galleries are insanely large (i.e. Downtown) and I'll probably split those off.

Hunt's great-grandson, Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan, was born in the house in 1866. He was known for his work in genetics and is the only Kentuckian to have won the Nobel Prize.

Looks like an interesting city you have there. Will have to detour from Louisville. I think 4d is the wrong pic, otherwise there's more to worry about than overhead wires.

Great pics!

Looks like Kentucky.

Beautiful!

Ahhh Lexington, one of my favorite cities!  Great pics, thanks for the update.

I love the shadows on that first pic for Gratz Park.

Enjoy!

Neat shots! I haven't been in Lexington in a longlong time, and it sure has changed and continues to change. It looks like having a university facility in the urban fabric is a big plus.

Were you using a filter to produce the stars, or are they a product of the lens/aperture selection? I like the effect, and I've gotten it once in a while but haven't really paid attention to how to get them.

These inspire me to get out and do some night photography before the weather turns bitter cold.

It WAS cold last night :(

I was using a 30" ~f/14 for most of the shots, so you get the "star" lighting effect. That, or you can buy a star filter that will do it for you at lower shutter speeds.

Sweet, I didn't know the Centrepoint project was that far along!

Cool pics. I visited Lexington a few times. Nice town, but I'm not sure I'd ever live there!
