Cleveland, Lakewood rehabs corner historic credits
By Ken Prendergast / June 22, 2022

Just south of Lakewood in Cleveland’s Jefferson neighborhood, the redevelopment of another former school, Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary, 3575 W. 130th St., was enabled by today’s award of historic tax credits. State officials said the $24,564,179 project by Sustainable Community Associates won $2 million in credits to construct 36 apartments in the 105-year-old school while 57 additional units will be built elsewhere on the 2.5-acre property. This was one of 10 school properties the Cleveland Metropolitan School District disposed of last December.

Props to whoever designed the logo for that casket company. Really nice work. Couldn't find a hi-res so I cleaned it up a bit.

  • Westown is very proud of that parking lot 🙃

Two Cleveland-area projects win millions
By Ken Prendergast / March 8, 2023

Two Greater Cleveland historic rehabilitation projects got an unexpected boost this week to the tune of nearly $7.2 million. The Taylor Tudors portion of a larger development in Cleveland Heights plus a renovation of McKinley School in Cleveland’s Westown-Jefferson Neighborhood were beneficiaries of an oversight by the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD).

Casket maker brings factory to life
By Ken Prendergast / March 11, 2023

Construction permits were filed this week with Cleveland’s Building Department to retrofit a west-side factory so Victoriaville & Co. of Victoriaville, Québec, Canada can open its first manufacturing operations in the USA. The plant will manufacture what’s called “death care merchandise” — namely caskets and urns in what is a growing market as the oldest Baby Boomers approach 80 years of age.

I was going to be boring and use the Google streetview, but that rendering with the logo was just too good.

Sort of a unicorn in that it's a growing concern in a dying business.

The buildings are out of order but it’s still a great logo. They’ll have to update it to add the SW HQ soon!

Variety Theater: Behind Kelly Flamos' Fight to Revive the Historic Venue

The former-owner of Mahall's 20 Lanes purchased the historic building to revitalize its multi-purpose space. By Jacob DeSmit

Nearly a year after Kelly Flamos closed on her deal to purchase the Variety Theater, the curtains remain closed on her vision to reinvent one of Cleveland’s historic landmarks.

Constructed in 1927, the theater’s interior is crumbling. Decades removed from a fabled Motorhead concert so loud it cracked part of the ballroom ceiling in 1984, large swaths of fallen plaster and debris sit piled across the aisles of the main floor and upper balcony; the building’s main entry remains shuttered to the bustle at the corner of Loraine Avenue and West 118th

Like the groups before Flamos, she faces a harsh reality: little can be done before untangling the web of necessary funding.

“I thought that my big challenge was going to be running the theater … getting people to come to the theater and keeping it going,” Flamos says. “Over the past year, I’ve realized that there are finish lines before I even get to that challenge.”

Hawthorne School conversion starts Monday
By Ken Prendergast / November 11, 2023

While classes aren’t starting on Monday morning at Hawthorne Elementary School, 3575 W. 130th St., in Cleveland Jefferson neighborhood, that is when Sustainable Community Associates (SCA) is going to school. The Cleveland-based real estate development firm has repurposed many an old Cleveland building into apartments, some with shops or restaurants. But this is SCA’s first lesson in converting a school to apartments.

Not sure if this is the right place, but Neighborhood Family Practice (a community health center) will be moving their W.117th & Lorain clinic to W.130th. I believe they'll be taking over the closed CVS but I'm not certain. I just know they said there's a drive through for the pharmacy they'll have, so assuming it's there.

Confirmed today that it's the old CVS on w.130 & Lorain they're moving into. It's going to be an expanded clinic, I believe with dental services, and a drive through pharmacy. CEO said proposals went out a couple weeks ago and they're hoping to be in by November of this year.

The Lido Lounge, 3029 W. 117th St., in Cleveland is no more. Lido goes back to at least the 1930s. The adult nightclub was demolished yesterday for a new bank.

With a city that still has so many empty lots and land to build on it blows my mind that we just tear things down, architecturally significant or not.

Someone should petition the State to put up one of those historic markers.

😂

This is sad. Can we move on from the now defunct "Lido Lounge" demo!  Thank You

^ Darn. I was really hoping Kelly & Co. could make it work out. I really loved what they did for Mahalls and Harlow's Pizza too.
