Judge: Receiver over Westin Cleveland Downtown can market for sale distressed hotel

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A judge on Tuesday approved a plan by the receiver overseeing the distressed Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel to market and sell the property, which is facing foreclosure after the mortgage lender said the current owners are in default.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Cassandra Collier-Williams said receiver Tim Collins, an attorney who is overseeing the operations and finances of the 484-room hotel on St. Clair Avenue, may proceed with plans to list the property for sale and to implement procedures to take bids.

The hotel is owned by a company linked to a set of Ukrainian oligarchs under FBI investigation.

I think it was great. I hosted some things and as per the usual, people are "surprised" at how great a city Cleveland really is.  It's aways the "we had no idea" or " I didn't think Cleveland....".  It goes back to a comment I've repeated about the city/county not having dedicated B2B or Consumer PR and Branding teams showcasing our city.

I decided I would visit Cleveland for next spring's eclipse.  Not so fast, GI, as they used to say on 100-yen alley.  The Westin, Residence Inn, Key Marriott, Aloft, Crown Plaza, and Renaissance are already sold out for 7-9 April period.

I have my travel agent looking for rooms for a client the weekend of 9/23.

Between the Browns, Guardians and other events here are some of the responses:

Intercontinental:  $449

Metropolitan at the 9:  Sold Out

Ritz Carlton:  Sold Out

Westin:  Sold out on 9/23.

Doubletree Lakeside:  $371.50

Hotel Indigo:  $449

Aloft:   $629

Bad problems for me...but good for Cleveland!     Probably worth mentioning in the Browns thread as they do generate economic activity.

Cleveland hotel rates among Top 5 highest in U.S. this month, survey says

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A travel booking site says Cleveland has the fourth most expensive hotel rates in the country this month – higher than San Francisco and Seattle, Nashville and Chicago.

A recent survey of online hotel rates found that the average price of an overnight stay in Cleveland is $234 in October, up from $187 last year, according to Cheaphotels.org. Only Boston ($303), New York City ($288) and Austin, Texas ($257) are higher.

Yes! Had a customer who last minute tried to stay at the Indigo in Beachwood off of Chagrin, they were told the rate for that night was $419. Every place along 271 has been at or close to sold out the last 2 weeks.

Damn! What’s up with that?

Not entirely sure. Demand is more or less back to pre covid levels combined with fewer operating hotels. The doubletree on Park East has been closed and there's been talk on here its going to be rebuilt as apartments or condos.

The Doubletree on Rockside is a disaster.  An embarrassment.  Curious if Hilton is shelving that brand.

I haven't been there in a long time.  I used to go to Rocky's quite a bit in the 80s/early 90s.  Shula's is closed. The new eatery in that space is The Sanctuary.

Cleveland welcomed nearly 18 million visitors in 2022, almost back to pre-pandemic levels

Published: Oct. 17, 202

By Susan Glaser, cleveland.com

"CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland region welcomed nearly 18 million visitors in 2022, up 12% from a year earlier, but still down from the record number of travelers in 2019.

Destination Cleveland announced Tuesday that the region’s tourism industry continues to rebound from the huge drop-off in visitors during the COVID pandemic. Cuyahoga County welcomed 17.9 million visitors in 2022 – a combination of leisure, business and group travelers -- who spent a record $6.4 billion while they were in town.

...

David Gilbert, president and CEO of Destination Cleveland, said the region is on pace to exceed 2019 levels in the next year or two, with continued strong hotel occupancy figures, conference bookings and some major events planned for the city in 2024, including the NCAA Women’s Final Four tournament in April and the Pan-American Masters Games in July."

Hilton is most definitely not shelving Doubletree, in fact it was one of the most successful flags for Hilton in and out of the pandemic. (Source: Close friend is an SVP for Hilton).

That said, based on what you said it sounds like the owner in Independence is at risk for having their franchise agreement pulled.

A friend just stayed at The Orbit Hotel, Trademark Collection by Wyndham. Never knew it existed, but it's a cute place in homage to mid century modern and the atomic age over by NASA. The person at the desk said "it's going to sold in a couple of weeks."

How did your friend like The Orbit?    Some of the reviews are not so good.  Seemed a bit odd to convert that building to a hotel.

Does anyone know of any Cleveland specific events schedule for the 4/8/24 eclipse?  I was thinking of driving up from Columbus and wondered whether anything special was planned on Public Square, Edgewater or University Circle.

Will we see Baily’s beads during solar eclipse in NE Ohio?

by: Laura Morrison

CLEVELAND (WJW) — With Northeast Ohio in the path of totality for the upcoming solar eclipse, it’s important to understand exactly what we’ll be seeing when things go dark.

Come April 8 — also the date of the Guardians Home Opener — some things FOX 8 viewers have been wondering include: what exactly are we going to see, and what in the heck are Baily’s beads?

According to NASA, the Baily’s beads effect happens “when gaps in the Moon’s rugged terrain allows sunlight to pass through in some places just before the total phase of the eclipse.” They’ll look like balls of light on the side of eclipse and shouldn’t last long.

I am a partial owner of this hotel (because I’m a Cuyahoga county resident) so it makes me proud to see this news. I wish the new convention center extension was actually a second tower for this hotel.

The Pan-American Master Games will run from July 12th - 21st.

The Superman movie is also still filming downtown through July 20th.

They are expecting about 4,000 athletes in the first Pan-Am Masters event since Covid. Competitors from 50 countries will compete in 24 sports categories.

^ I take it as a good sign of the cities progress that I had no idea this was happening. 15 years ago, it would’ve been the defining event of a Cleveland summer.

Combining this with the original Convention Center what is the total square footage?

And will the size now be comparable to convention facilities in other nearby cities - Columbus, Indy, etc?

With the Med Marts 250,000 sf added to the "original" convention center, it is now about 700,000sf, which is closer to Indy's 933k sf, but still way smaller than  Columbus's 1.8million SF.

Continuous open floor space for the larger conventions is still way smaller.

Well, Cleveland also has the IX center for really big shows.

Edited by LibertyBlvd

^have you been recently? It's mostly warehouse now! All the "big" shows are a fraction of their former size.
