September 30, 20159 yr Fan launches petition drive to keep Alternative Press Music Awards in Cleveland By Chuck Yarborough, The Plain Dealer Follow on Twitter on September 29, 2015 at 10:35 PM, updated September 29, 2015 at 10:47 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Painesville resident, Tia Silbaugh, has used an online petition site to put together a plea to Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson to keep the Alternative Press Music Awards Show in Cleveland in 2016. Because the Republican National Convention will be here next summer – and the bulk of the city's suitable venues are already promised to the G.O.P. – Alternative Press founder and publisher Mike Shea reported that the two-year-old show likely would have to be relocated. To see the change.org petition, which calls on Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson to take steps to ensure that the show remains here, without interruption, go to tinyurl.com/apmaspetition http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/09/fan_launches_petition_drive_to.html

Hasn't happened here in a long time and may not happen again for a while. You have to take advantage of that! This. Only the Olympics brings more attention to a city than a major party convention. Throw in the possibility it might be brokered. The world's view of Cleveland will be much different after that week. One way or another.

October 6, 20159 yr The RNC Shuffle: Other Major Events Reschedule Around Cleveland's Big Event Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7:21 am By ideastream's Brian Bull With an estimated 50,000 attendees, the 2016 Republican National Convention is projected to give a “bump” to Cleveland’s local economy in July. But the RNC is bumping some other big events that are also expected to draw crowds to the city. The city is giving first dibs to the GOP to book events at more than a dozen venues, and that means some shuffling trying to book other events. http://www.ideastream.org/news/bumper-crop-rnc-means-other-events-must-shuffle
October 6, 20159 yr ^I'm really kind of sick of this whiny Mike Shea guy from Alternative Press. Yes, I understand that it's a big music event and the last couple years of the AP awards were big sucsesses, but in the above posted article he says "we just kinda feel that if we move out of state, we’ll never come back.” What a dumb thing to say. If he needs to move the event for one year because of the RNC, what's keeping him, besides his whining, from moving it back in 2017? Nothing. He also made a comment in another article along the lines of not feeling wanted because the politicians didn't know about his awards show. He quoted Trent Reznor saying " if you want to be famous in Cleveland, you have to leave Cleveland". This guy needs to get off the cross. Politicians don't know about a music awards show? Huge surprise. He makes it sound like because his event MIGHT not be accommodated by the city just once because of this little thing called the RNC, that that's the end of AP in Cleveland and no one loves him or respects him, whine, whine, whine. Suck it up man and realize what a great opportunity the RNC is for the city and adjust your plans accordingly, then get ready for the 2017 show in Cleveland when there will be nothing to steal your thunder.
October 6, 20159 yr ^ Well said. And perhaps just as irritating are the headlines that make it sound as if it was the evil Republican Party that made the decision to oust the concert. This AP show exists solely because it's convenient for the bands who are already in town. In other words, the continued existence of the concert is beyond the control of the city and AP anyhow.
October 6, 20159 yr I agree, but I still hope the CVB bends over backwards to keep the AP awards. Just give them a little bit of the love they are asking for, and deserve, and this episode goes away (I hope)
October 12, 20159 yr Cleveland 1 of 2 finalists for national beer 'canvention' Cleveland and Omaha, Nebraska, are being considered for the 2017 gathering, said BCCA canvention planner Dave Gausepohl, who attended the Lake Erie chapter's 'Octobeer Blast' show Sunday at the North Olmsted Party Center. Next year's convention is set for Portland, Oregon. This year's – the largest in 25 years - drew about 2,000 people to Milwaukee. While it's "too early to tell" which city has the upper track, Gausepohl said, "there is no reason that Cleveland can't mimic those numbers." The decision will be announced in December or January, he said. http://www.cleveland.com/drinks/index.ssf/2015/10/cleveland_1_of_2_finalists_for.html#incart_m-rpt-1

October 30, 20159 yr Skyline completes Renaissance Hotel purchase with mystery partner As Toronto-based Skyline International Development Inc. (TASE: SKLN) announced completing its anticipated purchase of the landmark Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in downtown Cleveland, it answered one big question but raised a new one. Skyline said in a Thursday, Oct. 29 news release that downtown's largest hotel — until the new Hilton Cleveland Convention Center Hotel comes on line next year — will retain its priceless Marriott Renaissance franchise agreement. The hotel’s status in the international Renaissance brand associated with convention operations and the much-vaunted Marriott system of standards had not been previously addressed by the Toronto-based hotel owner and developer or the seller, CTF Development Inc., an affiliate of the Taiwan-based Cheng family. The family owns a global hotel empire. The new question Skyline raised is that it has an equity partner in the purchase it did not identify in its news release. That partner fronted $14.5 million of the landmark hotel’s $20.5 million purchase price, Skyline said, and Skyline invested $6 million in the property. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20151030/NEWS/151039988/skyline-completes-renaissance-hotel-purchase-with-mystery-partner?X-IgnoreUserAgent=1
November 17, 20159 yr With Marriott buying Starwood, what's the impact on Cleveland? Starwood has at least three brands in the city: Westin, Sheraton, and Aloft.
November 17, 20159 yr Until it is clear what Marriott plans to do with the various Hotel Flags it is hard to speculate. Sheraton has been a trouble spot for Starwood for a while, so it will be more interesting to see what Marriott decides to do with that brand as a whole. The Westin and Marriott brands generally compete for the same customers, and I would not be surprised if one of those properties gets rebranded. To what though I am not sure, then again any rebranding is still a few years out as this merger is going to be quite the lengthy combination.

The logo features a red elephant — the symbol of the GOP — walking atop a stylized, blue outline of an electric guitar with three inset white stars. December 29, 20159 yr How about Edgewater Park? Alternative Press Music Awards set 2016 date, but probably not in Cleveland By Troy L. Smith, cleveland.com Follow on Twitter on December 28, 2015 at 7:27 AM, updated December 28, 2015 at 10:37 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Alternative Press has set a date for the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards, but is still a bit vague on the location. The Cleveland-based magazine announced via social media its annual award show honoring all things pop-punk, post-hardcore, metal-core alt-rock and beyond will take place July 18 in Ohio. Yet, no specific city has been confirmed. The APMAs have taken place in Cleveland the past two years. In 2014, the show was held at Voinovich Park behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2015, it was moved to The Q. However, Alternative Press has had issues booking a venue in Cleveland for 2016. The APMAs are Warped Tour dependent. Alternative Press relied on numerous alt-rock bands to already be in town a day before or after Warped's stop at Blossom Music Center. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/12/alternative_press_music_awards_4.html

Event organizer Alonzo Mitchell blamed the cancellation on a lack of resources, saying in the letter, "It all comes down to simple math." "With the coming convention and other special projects vying for funds from a finite pool of resources, we were unable to secure the corporate and other donor support to host a NYE event that would be on par with past productions and up to the level of excellence that Cleveland deserves," Mitchell wrote. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/12/cle_rocks_new_years_eve_party.html

January 25, 20169 yr Hotel occupancy climbs in Cleveland, but will glut of new rooms outpace demand in 2016? By Susan Glaser, The Plain Dealer on January 25, 2016 at 3:17 PM, updated January 25, 2016 at 4:36 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hotel occupancy in 2015 climbed nearly 2 percent in Cleveland, a hike experts say is fueled by a growing tourism industry and a convention center that is steadily attracting new business. January 14, 20178 yr Will cross post here and indians thread, but I have heard with great confidence that the tribe has indeed landed the 2019 MLB all star game and it will be announced at the greater cleveland sports banquet later this month. We had heard rumors a year ago or so.
January 14, 20178 yr ^If its Crains' that's reporting this story, they should have corrected it with a footnote, showing that Cleveland exceeds cinci and columbus. Surprisingly sloppy for Crains. Cleveland still has the most dollars but it has far fewer guests than Columbus, even with Lakewood and Cleveland Heights added into the total. The RNC spiked Cleveland's dollar figure. Edit: Sorry, didn't see that Lakewood had 1,900 (and not just 1,000).

January 24, 20178 yr With all the new inventory and no RNC, things could get pretty ugly this year for the downtown hotel market. And in a few years, when the Cavs and Tribe aren't play-off shoo-ins... Hard for me to imagine that developers will really end up adding more rooms anytime soon (e.g., Stark, the old Huntington Bldg). January 24, 20178 yr I have been worried that there is an over supply of rooms. Maybe, the older inventory will get converted to another use and we end up with the right number of newer hotel rooms.

That's not sustainable. The leaders and greater cleveland tourism people spoke of a bright tourism here, have to put money where mouth is.
January 24, 20178 yr Cleveland's future is not as a tourist mecca, not in any significant way. We've already topped out with a party convention. That's among the biggest tourist events possible. We should fight harder for the rest of the Rock Hall inductions, it's crazy that we only get 1/3 right now. We also need a major music festival, at least on the scale of Comfest. We now have a comics convention, which thankfully has been moved from January but would still benefit from sunnier scheduling. Rock music and superheroes are Cleveland's main contributions to world culture. We aren't doing nearly enough to capitalize on those, and superheroes in particular have never been more popular than right now. In general, the city's authentic steampunk look and feel should be viewed as an asset. Any city can bulldoze itself and rebuild in a semi-suburban manner with lots of "vibrant greenspace" but few can match what we already have here. The only question is how much we choose to value that, before it's too late.
January 24, 20178 yr ^ the rock hall induction ceremony is every other year now, butt yeah i agree every year would be great. The RNC set the stage for "oh if cleveland can pull off a quality political convention, then they can host our event", as seen with the ABA a few weeks back..they need more of that and for it to be a constant stream. Im still livid they host all those shows at the IX Center. I find that to be a huge waste. Move them all downtown
January 24, 20178 yr The leaders and greater cleveland tourism people spoke of a bright tourism here, have to put money where mouth is. We've already spent hundreds of millions on boosting this industry, through the CC, MedMart, and convention center hotel (which was pitched as a key to attracting huge national conventions that would fill other hotels). How much more of our money do our leaders have to put up?
January 24, 20178 yr Any city can bulldoze itself and rebuild in a semi-suburban manner with lots of "vibrant greenspace" but few can match what we already have here. The only question is how much we choose to value that, before it's too late. But, but, 327[/member]... The Vibrant Greenspace initiative will make Cleveland a green-tourist destination: " In addition, stewardship of green spaces, such as parks and natural areas, enhance the city’s potential to attract tourism and to increase its profile as a green-tourist destination. Green space also lowers the city’s footprint, improves air quality, preserves natural habitat and biodiversity, as well as strengthens the resilience of neighborhoods and increases property values. "
January 24, 20178 yr Focusing on the 2% drop in occupancy is a glass-half-empty way of reading that article and the statistics. It says the daily rate went up to $135.81, up $9 per night in the Cleveland/Independence market, and part of a long term trend upward from $98.85 per night in 2010. This reflects increased demand for rooms. It also says the number of rooms jumped 11% in 2016; that means that even with a dip in occupancy rates, the actual number of room-nights still went up significantly in 2016. That being said, there is work to do in order to keep demand at 2016 levels and higher.
