Was just wondering if folks had advice for dealing with laptops & cameras in airports & on planes.

Keep 'em out of the X-Ray machines & metal detectors ?

I was planning a trip & figured I would keep everything in a carryon garment bag.

I have read in places that I should have the laptop out & on when going through security.

thanks for any advice

When I'm traveling, I almost always have both with me, and always in my carry-on.  You can keep the camera in the bag, but they require you to take the laptop out.  No need to turn it on though.

I take my laptop, pda, ipod, and any other electronice equipment in my carry on bag.

Just remember, when going thru security, that you will NOT have to take any electronic equipment out of your bag - ONLY THE LAPTOP - must be place in a gray bin by itself - so that it can go thru the carry on scanner.

its painless

I think there's only a problem with certain speeds of films in x-ray machines.  Hard drives and flash memory don't have any problems though.  I've taken my laptop and ipod through the scanners dozens of times.

They will make you take your laptop out of your carry on and put it in a seperate tray though...so don't pack it too deep.

Not sure about laptops but I just put my digital camera through the X-ray machine and it was fine. I wouldn't put film through the X-ray machine though.

I carried my camera on the plane and took plenty of photos. However, some heiferb!tch stewardess tried to tell me I had to turn it off on the return descent into CLE which is not a TSA requirement. In addition to politely correcting her error, I told her that her choice of mascara wasn't doing her any favors unless she was going for the tarantula look.

LMAO!!  After that one liner, I would have federal marshalls waiting for you as you deplaned!

I was told that a digital camera is considered a portable electronic device and therefore cannot be used below 10,000 feet.  Is this correct or just BS?

I used mine to take pictures of downtown Cincy when returning from NYC. The plane didn't crash.

Tarantula woman stewardesses sound kinda cool.

Conjures up scenes from Lair of the White Worm....

Thanks, everyone.

...the shoe carnival.

You'll have to take your shoes off going thru the airport

Mayday, dfly & hydrobond:

If you are on the left side (think, the drivers side) of the plane, there is no way a FA can see you as he/she should be seated (below 10k feet).  The only way a FA can see you if you are in seat 1/2/3 B (the aisle seat on the right side of the plane) and his/her view might be obstructed.  the FAs in the back of the plane can only see the back of the seates.MayDay was correct in challenge that FA, at times these days they take their authority a bit to far.

Yeah, I was on the left side of the plane, just ahead of the wing.  I don't remember what type of plane it was, large but not a 747.

Unfortunately, the windows were incredibly dirty on the plane, or else the pictures would have been amazing.

If it was a domestic flight most likely a 737, 757, airbus 320, or some version of a DC9
