Posted April 29, 200421 yr Hello! I thought I'd start an introductions thread for new members (or current ones) to introduce themselves, or just to introduce myself. My name is Jeff, Im 45, and I live in Washington Township, which is in the southern suburbs of Dayton, Ohio...meaning Cincinnati is about 45 minutes or so away. I'm a native of Chicago. I grew up in a "two-flat" in an older ethnic neighborhood (mostly Polish and Italian, now primarily Mexican) on the northwest side. Heres' a link to a pretty good article about the place: Cragin...it even mentions my old parish, St Stanislaus. I was pretty much was a city kid, getting around town on the L and busses as there was only one car in the family. My parents relocated to Louisville (the southwest suburb of Valley Station), and I spent my teenage years in Louisville, and then college in Lexington at the University of Kentucky, earning a degree in architecture, with a sort of undeclared minor in urban and regional geography (although I don't work in those fields). I got to know Louisville and Lexington pretty well during those years, both great little cities (Louisville isn't that little, though) that seem to keep on getting better. I ended up working for the military, and relocated to California, living in the northern Bay Area/wine country, the Vallejo/Napa/Fairfield area (Travis AFB), and then Sacramento (McLellan AFB), before transferring to Dayton to be closer to family (Louisville is only about 2.5 to 3 hours from Dayton, if the traffic is moving). Just a word on "Sacto": Sacramento is one of the best kept secrets of California, with a pleasant tree-shaded, camillia-scented "Old City", plenty of parks, old victorian & bungalow architecture, and has only just recently gone high-rise in a big way (devloping sort of European "scattered skyscraper" skyline). I guess I am quite the urbanophile (is that a word?) and take road trips/weekends to various citys in the area..actually quite a few daytrips to Cincinnati as its so close. My military work allowed me to also do some exploring of places further afield, like El Paso, Albuquerque, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles, among others. I've also been overseas, and am familiar with Frankfurt am Main--the "Rhine-Main Region"-- and Nurnberg. (I will stop now or this will sound like a bad version of that old Hank Snow song "I've Been Everywhere"). Other hobbys (besided being a city afficianado) are history and historic tourism (like to do road trips following old WPA guidebooks), food (restaurants and markets like Jungle Jims or Charllies here in Dayton), beer (imported and some of those great new domestic beers), music (pop & folk, not so much classical or rap), and have been getting into cinema a bit, too. I am also somewhat of a railfan, being interested mostly in passenger rail and traction. I'd like to close by saying this is one great site, and I really like your alls forums here, too! I dont have a digital camera, but I will try to contribute at least some links and narrative to the threads.[/code]
April 29, 200421 yr My name is Richard and am 23 years old. Covington, Ky is where I was born and went to highschool. I graduated highschool in 1999, joined the army reserves in 2001, am now a SGT, started college at Northern Kentucky Univeristy in the fall of 2002. I began to like tall buildings when I was about 10 years old. Strangely enough, there hasnt been a significant building built in Cincy since I discovered this love. I noticed that there were skyscraper sites for alot of cities out there, but there werent any for Cincinnati. I then decided to start my very own site to represent the city. The site was called cincinnatiuprise. It began on geocities like alot of other sites have. We moved it to our own domain almost 3 years ago and it recently died...because we couldnt afford to pay to host two sites that were almost the same content wise. I will graduate next spring in only 2 1/2 actual years of classes. I will have a BA in Criminal Justice and will probably become a police officer. If an urban type of degree was offered at NKU, i'd be all over it, but thats not the case. I would write more but I have to write some final papers for next week which is the last week of school!!!!!! I live a pretty boring life i know
April 30, 200421 yr Welcome, Jeff (you too, mark). I don't have much time to talk about myself...you'll learn enough about me in time (just see how many posts I have). Zoomtown has been acting crazy today, and it may just die on me. So more later.
April 30, 200421 yr Alright, I'll jump in on this.... I'm Andy, and I'm 22 years old. I was born and raised in Wyoming, an inner suburb in North Central Cincinnati (for those of you who don't know). I'm currently finishing my bachelor's in both Computer Science and Mathematics at Rose-Hulman, a small but excellent engineering school in Terre Haute, IN. The school is great, but Terre Haute sucks. I'm glad that I'll be done in a few weeks (only 16 class days left!). As I'm graduating in May, I've been fortunate enough to have found employment in the Chicago area. I'll be working as a security consultant; basically, I'll get paid to break into computer systems to figure out where the holes are. I've found an excellent apartment in Lincoln Park, so I'll be moving off to there very soon. Oh yeah, and I'm a huge sports nut. My favorite teams are, of course, the Bengals (hence the username), the Reds, and the Bearcats.
April 30, 200421 yr Alright. I'm Chris and I'm 21 years old. Born in Cincinnati; lived there for 10 years; then moved to Dayton. Parents split; still lived in Dayton. Now I live in Columbus due to Ohio State University but have mom in Dayton; dad living [soon] in suburban Cincinnati. I'm studying Landscape Architecture. April 30, 200421 yr What the hell... Here's me I'm Gary. I was born in Russia in 74 but I've lived in Columbus since 75. People just call me G cause I'm a Gangster :gun: (Russian Mob) I'm the head boss of organized crime here in Columbus. So whatever you need... hookers, booze, drugs, a hit on someone’s life or whatever, just check with my associate ColDayMan. He'll take care of you. Welcome to the forum.
April 30, 200421 yr All you have to know about Grasscat is that he is a "Crack Ass Cracka" That's Mr. Crack Ass Cracka, bitch.
April 30, 200421 yr I'm Shawn, I'm 31 (32 as of May 1st) and I'm the webmaster of clevelandskyscrapers.com. I'm a native of Salem, Ohio but I now live in Cleveland. My interest in cities and architecture started when I was very young and at one point I wanted to be an architect (my math skills aren't the best so that went out the window). My first memory of a "highrise" was a trip to Youngstown of all places! Once the internet came along, I started a site on geocities to highlight architecture in Cleveland. That site eventually snowballed into clevelandskyscrapers.com, and in 2002 I was contacted by the folks at Arcadia Publishing to author a book on architecture in downtown Cleveland. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 30, 200421 yr Shawn, that's really cool... I may have to check out that book. I suppose I never have introduced myself properly. I'm Mark, 25, and currently live in OTR (Barely) on Central Pkwy. I'm there temporarily while my loft/condo on 6th street is completed. It's the place being rehabbed next door to the CAC for those interested (I think I've posted some pictures). Last year I sold my house in Price Hill (the nicer part) where I lived for 2 years. Before that I lived for a year in Fairfield (ugh, never never again). Previous to that I lived in Green Township (West side of Cincy) for my first 19 or so years. I work in Avondale (sometimes considered Clifton, but incorrectly) as a server techie type for a local hospital... I figured people need to invest in Downtown to make it better, so rather just think about it, I bought something... Hopefully it works out and more follow.
April 30, 200421 yr Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm a man of wealth and taste :D (Actually throw the wealth part out of the window). The name is Sandor Age 29, 6' tall (when wearing new hightops), brown hair, grey eyes (used to blue when I was younger), I think I'm up to 180 lbs. Reside in Clintonville, which in a neighborhood in northern Columbus between the OSU campus (which has it's own neighborhood status) and Worthington. I live about 2 miles NE of Gary (Buckeye City) employer. Lived here in the "city" since last February. Before then I lived out in the middle of nowhere (actually somewhere between Ashley, Kilbourne, and Marengo along the Delaware/Morrow Co. line, 30 miles NE of Columbus). Been a resident of Central Ohio for all but the first 7+ years of my life, having been born spending my early, early childhood in Geauga County (east of Cleveland for the Geography impared). Speaking of Geography, Graduated from Ohio State with a BA in Geography back in 2002, tried to get a minor in City & Regional planning there, but that program is geared towards Masters & PhDs, and I my plans got derail by an incompetent teacher (grad student actually) in that department. My claim to fame around here is that I'm one half of the team that puts together http://www.roadfan.com. Some of you have posted my photos on the SSP forum over the years, thats how I came to this community. My interests are Photography and highways (obviously), Blues music (I'm an officer for the Columbus Blues Alliance), The Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Phillies And finally, I'm going to throw this all away at the end of the summer, and move to Baton Rouge to go chase a Masters Degree at LSU. Of course if someone would hire me to do transportation or community planning here in Ohio before then, I'll be more than happy to stay put. That's probally more than enough you need to know about me. :) Sandor
May 2, 200421 yr My name is Tom, i'm 24 and moved to Cincinnati last summer. I grew up near Kalamazoo and went to college at Michigan State. After graduation, I worked for a lobbyist in Lansing for a couple years. I got tired of politics and decided to come down to UC for law school, where I am just about finished with my first of three years. In March I got engaged to Linnae and we're getting married in Kalamazoo in October. She currently lives and works in Southfield, MI, but starting June 1 she'll be working as a buyer for Advics in Lebanon, OH. I currently live on Ludlow in Cincinnati, but I think we're going to move to either downtown or to Mt. Adams this summer.
May 2, 200421 yr Very impressive resumes all. Gotta get a look at that book MayDay. I'm Tom, and was born and raised in Ithaca, NY(surprised eh?). I was in the Navy for 4 years, and eventually graduated from Penn State. I've been working in property management on and off for over 20 years (oh yeah, I'm 52 years old). I currently manage a large (600,000 sq ft) Fed Govt office building in downtown DC. Keeps me busy. I'm married to a much younger gal (I know she'll outlive me, women always do). We have a 14 year old daughter who is the light of my life. My main hobby has become cities (visiting and taking crummy pics  ) I also enjoy model railroading and reading. Yeah, I've turned into an old fart, but isn't that what I'm suppose to do? Anyway, I like this forum and hope to see it continue to grow.

May 3, 200421 yr He loves our smaller cities. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 3, 200421 yr ^ I do, I do. Actually, I love all ( well most) smaller cities. Ohio seems to have a wealth of them. I like the big cities too, but they seem to be pretty well represented already. So many cities to see, so little time to see them.
May 3, 200421 yr My name's Ryan, I'm 20 years old and attending college in California. Lived in Cincinnati for 13 years (easter fringe of Hamilton County), lived in Newtown for most of that time. Moved to Phoenix because the weather in Cincinnati sucks, but I'm an author/journalist working on a crime series set in Cincinnati.
May 3, 200520 yr Hmm... I joined the forum too late to see this thread. I am Andy, 22 years old. (But a number of poeple really do call me Pig Boy, or just "Pig".) My dad was an Air Force officer (retired in 1995), so my childhood had a few moves in it. I was born at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base hospital, lived in Beavercreek only until age 1, then we moved to northern Virginia till '89, then Mililani, Hawaii until September 1991, then back to Beavercreek. I am six days away from graduating with a BA in Geography from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. In August I'll be moving to Madison for an MS in Geography from the University of Wisconsin. (I shall do my best to return to Ohio afterward.) That's pretty much my life story.
May 3, 200520 yr I'm variously known as Rob, Robert, Bob, and "Hey, you wit' da camera!" -- the latter mostly by Amtrak, Metra and CTA security. I'm probably the geezer of the board, at 65. Grew up on a dairy farm, trained and worked as a machinist-toolmaker, accountant, programmer, and computer tech, retired from IBM in 2000 and since then I've made it my mission to annoy at least one authority figure each day. I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana, not far from Ohio. I've been an Ohio wanna-be ever since I dated a guy who lived in Cleveland in 1979. That affair deteriorated into a relationship and collapsed not long afterward, but I still have friends in Cleveland in visit there from time to time. My home on the web is http://robertpence.com
May 3, 200520 yr My name is Eric. I am from Cleveland. Currently I am a student at the university of Toledo, and I will be graduating in 5 days with a B.S. in Pharmacy Administration. However, today I learned that I was accepted into the University of Findlay's pharmacy school. So now I have a few more years of school and will graduate with my PharmD sometime in the far future (but it will be worth it). I became interested in "urban" areas as a young kid going to the Galleria and Tower City for Christmas shopping, and I have loved Cleveland since I was a young kid.

May 3, 200520 yr hmm.... i'm kyle, 22 years old. i like pizza, urbanity, ohio... and courthouse architecture. i used to go around taking pictures everywhere in ohio but i don't anymore because i dont have a car to drive....and have no intention of getting another one

'Fraid so! Bet you didn't think that was possible! Getting older doesn't seem like such a bad deal, after you've contemplated the only alternative. It has its benefits, too. When I was in my teens & twenties, people thought I was an upstart, obnoxious, wise-ass, somewhat screwed-up kid. Now, I behave the same way and they think I'm somewhat eccentric and crochety, and that's quasi-respectable.
May 4, 200520 yr I think your posts from the archives should include Grampa Simpson-like narratives. "Now, my story begins in 19-dickety-two. We had to say "dickety" 'cause that Kaiser had stolen our word "twenty". I chased that rascal to get it back, but gave up after dickety-six miles..." "The important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time..."

May 4, 200520 yr Chris, 26, born in the Heights and fell in love with Cleveland during my winter soirees into the city to see Bruce tha Spruce and Mister Jing-a-Ling and gaze wide-eyed into the window displays around Public Square and Euclid. My childhood crush turned into a legitimate love affair (complete with lots of heartbreak and pain) during my five years traveling to-and-from St. Ignatius in Ohio City via the RTA. (No, I didn't go to high school for five years...there was a summer program for Junior High kids!) I spent four lovely years in Cincinnati at the University of where I got my Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies and have lived in Portland, Oregon and Brooklyn, NY ever since... but stay tuned, as I'm heading back to Cleve-o in three months for grad school!
May 4, 200520 yr ^ Don't give up now, there are only six county seats left! bah! i'll just have to hope that those six counties will merge with other ones next to them...
May 4, 200520 yr hmmm....guess its my turn. 23 Year old, born in Warren, OH. Moved to Ferndale, MI when i was two. Raised there for a while. Moved away to college at Case Western Reserve Universtiy to get my BA in political Science in 2003. Currently i work in government relations for a slowly going bankrupt IT Healthcare firm (bad career move), and i'm currently looking for a new job Previous Addresses: Warren, OH Ferndale, MI Cleveland, OH (university circle) Detroit, MI (midtown) Cleveland, OH (little italy) Arlington, VA (Ballston) Cleveland, OH (little italy) Cleveland Heights, OH (coventry village) Shaker Heights, OH (Shaker Square) Cleveland Heights, OH (Wa-Noble)
August 18, 200519 yr Just joined recently an was lookin through old threads... My name is Jason, 24(soon to be 25), born and raised in Akron. Still live in Akron. I grew up in the heart of the city and have always had a fondness for all things urban. Who knew one day that I'd would luck up and find 380 other urban fanatics. :-D
March 31, 200718 yr Hey I'm Kenny. Born and raised in Cleveland Heights. I went to school at Ohio State, after graduating I moved back to Cleveland, but couldn't find a job - so after two months I up and moved to New York City in August of 1989 with no job and $500. I landed a job at Warner Music (since then I've worked at 5 of the 8 original Time Warner company's). I've lived in Park Slope (in one of the photo thread, a forumer took a picture of my first apartment building), then I moved to Boreum Hill until the summer of 97. Currently, I live in the in the Mt. Morris/Marcus Garvey Part of Harlem where I've been quite happy for the last decade.
