I've always believed the river is the diving line....

^I think that people consider the river the dividing line.

Pope, the "diving" line?  Where people so distressed to move to the west side they dived into the Cuyahoga instead? Or does Cleveland have an underground cliff diving history/following and this information didn't make it into the Cleveland Memory Project archives?

I too have always thought the "divider" was the river.

My dad lives on the east side in Lake County and thinks that Slavic Villiage is the west side!  The whole east/west thing in the Cleveland area seems to break down to perception--especially from those sheltered in the suburbs for too long.  On the converse side, I once dated a girl from Middleburg Heights whose father feared her going to the east side with me.  He was convinced that there were no white people "over there."  I hope his daughter helped to change his mind.

That's funny because the west side suburbs are so gross, imho.

Who asked you?

Yes, Lakewood and Rocky River, especially that trashy Beachcliff area are just sooo horrid.

Let's see - MyTwoSense and jamiec find it necessary to make derogatory comments about Cleveland's West side. That might be cute, except your Cleveland-based Admin resides on the West side - and I can decide that such comments violate the terms of the forum and suspend your accounts indefinitely. Care to reconsider your terms?

I meant cities like Middleburg Heights. I live in Lakewood. Most of the outer-ring suburbs on all sides are nasty. I don't want to live in a ranch house with no trees.

edit: I should have used an emoticon. My bad.

Aye Dios Mio! Somebody didn't take their "happy pills" this morning!  (that was joke)

Come on MayDay, oh Grand Diva HBIC.  You know damn well, I'm only being sarcastic, when I make jokes about the Westside - not serious.  So, for anyone that's new or thinks im serious...I'M NOT.  I thought it was funny to play on the "old Eastside vs westside stereotypes" in the context of this thread.  Like Jamiec stated, I should have used emoticons, etc....

My goodness you people on the westside are so damn sensitive....JUST KIDDING!

^are you white?

Let's see I grew up in Lake County and dated a girl from Middleburg Heights who's racist dad thought the entire east side was black.

I've been slapped several times on this site with personal fouls.  Unnecessary use of sarcasm without emoticons.  People need to lighten up!  :) :) ;) :) :(

(hopefully those got me off the hook with the flamingo-decorated-yard denizens of this here forum).

^i was kidding. :)      (i know, i should use emoticons)

I have no idea why my response showed up in the quote of M2S's post.  This was my text:

Maybe I used TOO MANY emoticons and overloaded the anti-sarcasm system...

Hey...Leave Mary Hartman alone!  She never hurt anyone!  PS...volume one, (the first 25 episodes) of Mary Hartman will be available on DVD March 27.  I cannot wait to watch the antics of desperate housewife numero uno!  I know its going to be a scream!

Here's my take, as one of the founding Admins of this forum, and having spent years as an Admin of the Midwest section of skyscraperpage.com's forum (in other words, this ain't my first time in the rodeo).

The problem is this - most of the "regulars" understand that the comments aren't serious and that everyone's  just busting each others chops; but we have a lot of new people (and lurkers) who might not. What happens is they jump into the fray and things get out of hand, really fast. Then I have to jump in and clean up the mess, like Mommie Dearest*. I have better ways to spend my time, and I think we all have better things to do than perpetuate the recycled garbage of East Side/West Side. I don't know about the rest of you, but I live in Cleveland, period.

eh same difference.

Late to this thread, but an interesting tidbit about Tremont:  Although not a big Italian neighborhood, my mother grew up on W11th (1924-1936) because my grandfather was a foreman on the B&O.  They had the only phone in the neighborhood, because he would get called if there was a problem in the railyard and he would have to gather his crew.  My mother and her family always referred to Tremont as "The South Side".

The river has always been considered the dividing line between east and west.

In this day and age, there obviously is no place for the racial comments, but I think its okay to talk about it in the historical context.  There truly was a racial dividing line in the city prior to the 60's.  Blacks did not live on the West Side.  I don't know why.  I grew up in North Royalton, graduated in 1971, and remember the rumor that a black family was going to move into town.  A lot of negative signs were tacked onto trees and street signs.

Very interesting post DanB.  Note that my girlfriend's father in Middleburg Heights belief in the east side's racial makeup (as noted in a earlier post) was making these comments in the mid 1990's.  It's a shame how some people live in a bubble.

^Last I checked, for City Proper, The city is hugely divided East/West for racial composition.

Maybe it was a year or so ago, PD had a graphic by Cleveland Neighborhood.

Most Westside neighborhoods now have a significant percentage of African Americans, though.  The difference is the Eastside has all of the segregated African American neighborhoods.

DanB, I read once that Tremont and Slavic Village used to be known together as the Southside.  There used to be a bridge at Clark that connected the two together, at least somewhat, thus making them more cohesive.  Tremonters could shop at 55th/Broadway, for example.
