August 11, 200816 yr Pope, kudos on that route, what are you training for or did you just get caught up in the olympic spirit?
August 11, 200816 yr Pope, kudos on that route, what are you training for or did you just get caught up in the olympic spirit? thanks. Seems like every year, I go through the motions, start ramping up, and by mid summer, I get busy and slack, and then by winter I'm done. This year's been different, and I'm not going to let myself down this year. So I keep pushing myself, hopefully until it snows. My goal at the beginning of the year was to run from public square to university circle (and back), I should be doing that in about two weeks if my current trend continues.
August 11, 200816 yr I can't get the gmail - pedometer thing to track the miles and make the map. What am I doing wrong?!
August 11, 200816 yr i remember there were always a lot of joggers at antrim park in columbus. anybody run there? they run around a little lake. we used to call it the green lake (seattle) of columbus. heh.
August 11, 200816 yr ^C'mon Pope, train for the Tow Path half marathon! eep, I'm still six miles short...Well I do have two months...
August 11, 200816 yr Just set a goal. It is not hard. I had never run over 6 miles before I decided to train for a marathon. Now I'm on my third.
August 11, 200816 yr Once you get over that 13 mile hump, it is like the endurance never leaves you. If I stop training for a few months, it is not very hard to run a 10-miler after a week of 3 or 4 jogs.
August 11, 200816 yr 13 miles?!? Good lord, that's why they invented public transportation!!! :-o clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 14, 200816 yr Beautiful day for a run, it was about 75 and overcast when I took my run at lunch. Felt like I was really running and not jogging for the first time in a long time. Time is what really keeps me from doing longer runs, if I can't be done in 30 or 40 minutes it doesn't happen with my job and my family (and my charming lakewood four-square restoration)
August 14, 200816 yr I can't say enough how great the trails around MU Ohio are. I tell my students all the time that they probably won't experience trail running as good as we have in Oxford. I hurt my back a while ago and haven't run since like February, but I'm going to get fixed and back in the saddle. I love running when it's over.

What type of trails are they? mountain-bike grade? walking? They are hiking trails basically, wide enough for 2 and bikes are prohibited. We have around 15miles or so and the terrain varies from open field to deep woods. Good scenery and some tough hills. I say they are the most underutilized gem MU Ohio has. A shame and a blessing--shame more folks don't use them, blessing that they aren't overrun w/peeps. But I would like someone to clean the spider webs for me.
October 24, 200816 yr I spoke too soon on my post from back in July. Tonight I just had my first pain-free run since mid-August. I had a pain similar to shin splints in my right leg but more serious and so I basically had to stop for 10 weeks. I did a few short painful runs in that time but all the sudden it healed and I felt 100% today. I ran hard for two miles and then wrapped it up because I didn't want to risk it.
October 24, 200816 yr Two weeks ago, I ran the Tow Path Marathon. I finished in 3:54--the best time of my three marathons.
October 24, 200816 yr I'm looking forward to getting out of this arm cast, so I can start running again. Has anyone had experience running with a non-related hindrance like this?
November 4, 200816 yr Anyone running the Turkey Day 10K race in Downtown Cincinnati? I'm wondering if I'd be able to run that by training for two weeks. I get this cast off on the 17th. EDIT: Probably not. *sigh*
November 4, 200816 yr I've run Cleveland's Turkey Trot a few times. Always a fun way to start Thanksgiving before putting on the sweats and eating 8 servings of turkey and dressing. One time a couple years ago, it was so windy at that Turkey Trot that they shortened the route (many runners just left) and I had to push my girlfriend forward just to make it down the street.
November 4, 200816 yr Would you say that a race motivates you to run farther/longer than you would have otherwise...or have run before?
November 4, 200816 yr Yes. Running my first half-marathon (Virginia Beach 2007) certainly motivated me. I ran it at 238 pounds, which was not easy. I did not start losing weight until I backed off the running and spent more time with the weights after that race.
November 4, 200816 yr Would you say that a race motivates you to run farther/longer than you would have otherwise...or have run before? Absolutely. I had never run over 8 miles when I first decided to run a marathon.
November 4, 200816 yr Would you say that a race motivates you to run farther/longer than you would have otherwise...or have run before? Absolutely. I had never run over 8 miles when I first decided to run a marathon. Ditto...I had never run more than a 10k. It was only until someone told me I couldn't run a marathon at a similar pace to a 10k that I decided to try it, slowly working my way up of course. Sadly microfracture surgery has put my running days behind me. I decided to quite while I was still ahead.
November 4, 200816 yr Running is great for your cardio and mental health, not always so great for your joint and bone health...I've been blessed with little physical issues for my 15 or so weekly miles.
November 5, 200816 yr Well, I have decided that I'm absolutely fed up with this arm cast, and I'm going to go out for a 2 mile run this evening. I'm sure it'll look silly and be very uncomfortable, but I need this. So if you see someone in an armcast on Clifton or Ludlow Avenues...honk. :)
November 5, 200816 yr Finally had a break in my schedule and was able to bike my usual 38 mile ride yesterday (after a 2-week hiatus), then ran about 3. Got back on the bike today for the same 38 miles and couldn't believe how much that short run took out of my legs. I've been convinced for a long time that jogging/running is far superior to biking when it comes to all-around fitness, but unfortunately most people can't keep up a jogging routine due to various minor injuries. But it's interesting if you do both to compare how running saps energy for biking but I can always run a few miles after biking as if I hadn't been on the bike.
November 5, 200816 yr I did find that biking hardcore distances does wonders for your endurance while running. I'm hoping to be able to get back on the bike on the 17th, so that I can complement my running routine. I was riding 31 miles twice per week and 20 miles thrice per week.

November 6, 200816 yr No, I have been working such an erratic schedule this year I haven't gotten back into good shape. Only being able to exercise 5 or 6 times a month doesn't cut it, and so I tend to go overboard when I get the chance! Jogging regularly can alone accomplish 90% of what's needed for a high level of fitness but like I said I've never been able to go more than 4-5 months before having to take a month or more off for some kind of dumb nagging pain. Also, I am going on a cruise the first week of January so with 7 weeks to go I should be able to drop 10 pounds no problem, esp with some time off in December. I know a very nice pleasantly plump girl who bicycled from Ohio to Connecticut about 2 months ago and dropped over 10 pounds in just 9 days. The cruise leaves from Tampa and I've been daydreaming of biking all the way from Cincinnati down there but I'd need a magical break in the weather!
November 12, 200816 yr I've finally worked myself up to some nice distances running - my maximum distance so far has been 8.5 miles, but I can knock out 6+ miles any day, which is so much fun! Running from the Eden Park area to Clifton and back, or planting a car in Mariemont and running there from Walnut Hills - so many options with longer distances... My 8.5 miles, up to Rookwood, through some great Norwood and Evanston neighborhoods, and back to Eden Park: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2370656 Clifton and back: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2357418 And this was a monster - just 4.4 miles, but all the way up Taft from Columbia Parkway: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2356131
February 13, 200916 yr Now that the weather is finally getting back to my type of running weather I'm getting back to it. Monday I ran for about 2 miles and it nearly killed me. Today I decided to add about another half mile and I wasn't feeling much better when I got back. I did find out that if your going to run in Hamilton, be sure to keep an eye peeled for dogs. Those suckers pop up out of nowhere.
March 16, 200916 yr Did anyone else do the St. Malachi 5 miler in the flats on Saturday? There was a ton of people so I figured that there were other UOers running it too. I met my goal of sub 8 minute miles which was pretty good considering the last time that I ran that far was when I ran the 10k last fall. It was a nice day but it was cold standing around. I think my splits were all over the place. I got caught up in the pack at the start and my first mile was around an 8:15 and my second mile was probably closer to a 7:15. I quit paying attention after that but I going to guess that mile 5 was probably around a 9:00 because I had nothing left going up the hill to the finish line and was getting passed left and right.
March 16, 200916 yr I got caught up in the pack at the start I was never a race runner (hell, I was never an anything runner), so my first race was this past Thanksgiving Day 10K here in Cincinnati, and there were between 10K and 15K people - with that initial massive bolus of humanity, our first mile was 10:20, while our last mile was 8:15...
April 2, 200916 yr *snif!* I miss running. I feel like I may never run again at this point. Except maybe to the hospital... Soon...?
April 2, 200916 yr ^I'm planning on running the half marathon. That's what I'm planning to do as well, haven't had the weather yet this year to train for the full marathon.
April 2, 200916 yr ^I run my full marathons in the fall. I can't get myself into running in the early morning in January and February. I hate treadmills. The half-marathon serves as a nice build up for the full marathon. It is also much easier. :)
April 3, 200916 yr I am planning on running the Cleveland 10-miler because I am going to be out of town the weekend of the Marathon, so I will miss my opportunity to run the half. Anybody else plan on running the 10 Miler?

April 3, 200916 yr It seems like it is an easy training race for those planning on running the half or full Marathon. They moved it this year it starts at Edgewater park and runs down lake to the west end of Lakewood. Flat as a board.
April 5, 200916 yr I run with those 10 lb weights that you wrap around and strap on to your legs. I didn't think they would be so annoying though. I should have gotten the vest instead. I don't like running long distances so I just use the weights and run shorter distances. I'd rather watch paint dry than do cardio and run. Short intense workouts are more fun to me.
April 27, 200916 yr Did anyone else end up running the Hermes cleveland 10 miler? That wind in Edgewater park made that last mile seem reaaaally long

Plus, after a few months of that, you'll be able to jump up to the second story when the Shao-Lin master pulls the stairs up.
