December 15, 200915 yr So Lorain Sr. High School is officially gone? I take it the two remaining Lorain High schools, Admiral King and Southview, absorbed the students and districts redrawn or did I miss something??
December 15, 200915 yr MyTwoSense, Here are the panoramas of the LHS site: http://www.locophotogblog.com/?p=428 Yes, it is gone. And the other 2 high schools took in the students a while ago. In its very last incarnation, LHS was a middle school.

In its very last incarnation, LHS was a middle school. Why did they chose to eliminate Lorain vs the other two schools. I dont know much about Lorain schools, I just remember having games against their schools in High School.
December 16, 200915 yr Lorain High was the oldest. It first opened in 1876. I got this just before the demolition started. Shortly after, the fence went up.
December 16, 200915 yr One of the options for addressing the school district's deficit is to consolidate the remaining two high schools at the AKHS site (maybe they'll resurrect the Lorain High name): Lorain Schools (slide #4)
December 16, 200915 yr Warren, Springfield, and Hamilton have all consolidated back to one high school. I assume Lorain will get there eventually.
December 16, 200915 yr lorain catholic also closed around a little after lorain high. note you might also see a lorain clearview hs, but that is a technically sort of a suburban hs outside of the lorain city district. it wouldn't surprise me if they consolidated down to one hs, that seems to be the direction its headed and with a shrunken rustbelt population it might make sense.
December 16, 200915 yr Is Lorain that small? they can go from three high schools to one? Was the high school population small for each school?
December 16, 200915 yr ^ well as you seem to be old enough mts these are the old sports league/school size rankings from back when i was there -- the three lorain city hs were all 'AAA,' lc was 'AA' and clearview was/is 'A' -- if that means anything. there was even a st. marys hs too for awhile until the mid-60's ('A'). but that was then and as you know in NE Ohio times is tough and we're all much leaner and meaner now.

Well AAA is Div. I now. So they each had a student body roughly the size of Shaker. It's sad that the oldest school has closed.
December 19, 200915 yr lol -- thats got to be the first time anything lorain was compared to anything shaker!
December 19, 200915 yr lol -- thats got to be the first time anything lorain was compared to anything shaker! Hush Now. Well I didn't say Heights or Brush which have huge student populations
December 19, 200915 yr lol! i wasnt referring to school sizes. ok time to go out in the world and beat the blizzard...

The Lorain school board decided last night that of all the names suggested for the future combined high school, Lorain High was the best choice. The first Lorain High was closed several years ago, and the original building was recently demolished... http://morningjournal.com/articles/2010/03/18/news/mj2473238.txt Students submit suggestions for Lorain High colors, team name Tuesday, March 23, 2010 By MEGAN ROZSA [email protected] LORAIN — Now that the new combined high school has been named Lorain High by the adults, it's up to the students to choose the nickname, colors and mascot. Roughly 2,500 students in eighth through 11th grade were given a survey to fill out and submit by the end of the day yesterday. Bryan Koury, the district's athletic director, is overseeing this process and will collect the results today and have a final tally ready by Friday. He said students will then make a final vote and the winning combinations will be sent to Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson. After the process is complete, the board president and Atkinson will make a decision on how to best announce it, she said. Because March 31 is a special board meeting, she said she wasn't sure if it should be announced at that time... http://morningjournal.com/articles/2010/03/23/news/mj2494677.prt Top three nickname suggestions for Lorain High Wednesday, March 24, 2010 LORAIN — After tallying the survey results from Lorain students the top three nicknames for Lorain High School are the Steelmen, Lakers and Titans. The top three color combinations are blue and silver, black and gold and black and silver. Mascot suggestions were scattered across the board and Athletic Director Bryan Koury said it would be better to know the final nickname and colors before a mascot can be chosen. The students will vote Friday for a name and colors. Read Thursday’s edition of The Morning Journal for more about this story. March 26, 201015 yr hmm, thx this is all news to me. good god now when will southview be closed and torn down? if they build a new hs i agree it should be called lhs again, but in deference to the old lhs history and to the rest of the city they should come up with an all-new nickname for the sports teams.
March 26, 201015 yr ^ I believe Southview is slated to become the new home for Whittier Jr. High in the current plan. Agree with you about a new nickname and colors too - always thought it was awkward for the girls teams at LHS to be the Lady Steelmen... I kind of like Lakers not only in reference to Lake Erie, but to the lake freighters once built in Lorain's AmShip yard.
March 26, 201015 yr yeah that nickname sounds fine to me too -- and lol i never realized the girls teams were called the lady steelmen -- how funny i never even noticed that -- shame on me! so do you know for sure where they would build the new hs? i'm guessing on on the old lhs site of course, but maybe somewhere else? hmm, my aunt is a retired long-time whittier teacher, i'll have to ask her what she thinks of all this next visit.
