Some questions that could be answered or reasons why you like the newspapers you picked:

Quality of national and international coverage

Quality of local and state coverage

Editorial and op-ed page columnists

Bias or lack of bias

Quality of city coverage

Is the newspaper positive or negative about the city?

Is the newspaper full of fluff or is it worthy of going through every section?

Do you like the setup of the newspaper?

Is is mostly black and white or color?

Thanks for answering these questions and participating in this discussion. :-)

Just an fyi, for this thread to continue, there will be no city-bashing in this thread (or it will be closed and Wheelingman will be *not pleased*).

As for my favorite?  The Dayton Daily News (hometown bias, sure, but I love Mike Peters' cartoons).

In Cleveland it would have to be the Free Times or Scene (wish we had the Onion on  a regular basis!)....The Plain Dealer pretty much sucks!  :)

The PD sucks, but I don't like the alternarags any better.  Call & Post!  Seriously, I don't know.  I read NYTimes for anything beyond local news.

The Toledo Blade broke the Noe/Coin scandal--but sat on it until after November 4, 2004 when it would no longer affect the election.

The Akron Beacon Journal carried the Knight-Ridder stories of all the bullshit in the Iraq War at a time when the rest of the media was still swooning in the "Bush Cult of Personality".  Then Wall Street had the K-R chain busted to bits and now the flagship paper is owned by an obscure Canadian (Black).

The Plain Dealer has some writers that I do like a lot.  They did put an antiwar rally on the front page, above the fold in ~February 2003 as this fools' conquest was brewing.  I occasionally find stories there that I don't find on the internet first.  Their columnists, that only appear in the print version, are a boring selection.  Maureen Dowd and David Brooks...yawn.  Their editorials are cautious and uninteresting.  Brent Larkin's and Kevin O'Brien's Republican bias is so obvious it is pathetic.

The Youngstown Vindicator has the balls to talk about Israel.  The Willoughby News-Herald and the Warren Tribune are pathetic RW rags.

Wow, that's a toughie, as all Ohio papers I know of have serious shortcomings... I guess, of the ones that have the least, I'd go with:

The Free Times

... The Cincy Enquirer seems pretty good, as city dailies go in this state... Too bad it reps such a conservative city.

I read the PD because it's local and has the most info. Otherwise, it's not that impressive and is sort of bland.

In terms of good local reporting, I think the NY Times has done the best job exposing what's good and bad about NE Ohio recently.

Local sports, the Beacon all the way, specifically Brian Windhorst on the Cavs.

Weekly entertainment pub: CiN Weekly from the Enquirer is the best "youth-oriented" fun publication in the state, in my opinion. When I'm going out on the weekend, I don't want to get a buzz kill like Scene provides.

Best daily overall.... UM... I'm not sure. I like the Dispatch's Web site the best, although it bugs me they put sports above Business.

... yeah, I dig Windhorst, too.  He's by far the best Cavs writer in the NEO.

I have to go with the Dayton Daily News as well!

For an alternative paper, I really like the Dayton City Paper

the one with KJP's articles!

Tiffin Gazette!

the one with KJP's articles!

Thank you!

the one with KJP's articles!

Thank you!

in the grand scheme of things that really matter to me, you are seemingly one of the only writers to cover the subject (i.e. development). I can find sports articles and meaningless babbling anywhere on the internet.

The Cleveland Press!

The Sun Papers

The Free Times

The Cleveland Press... I remember seeing the Cleveland Press logo from the open end of municipal stadium, all though a youngster then, I think it was located on Lakeside Ave?

Cleveland Press was at the northeast corner of East 9th Street and Lakeside Avenue -- where the Northpoint office complex is today.

Now that many of you have posted, I will post my favorites.

1. Toledo Blade- it is very well rounded and gives a lot of local and state information. It is run by the same people who own the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which is a newspaper I can get in print every day, and that I love. The Blade is liberal (Ohio's most liberal major newspaper) and somewhat biased, but it still does its best to be non-biased in its reporting. It's editorials are good and it has a good Op-Ed page. I love the editorial cartoons too.  I am not sure about the Sports page or other sections.

2. Dayton Daily News- This is a very well rounded newpaper also. It gives a good deal of state and local news. It also puts a decent bit of national and world news from the New York Times and Washington Post. It has a liberal editorial page and it has a good Op-Ed page. I also like that it has a special city and suburban section that comes out every week, which covers the little stories that wouldn't normally be seen in the newspaper. I enjoy its sports page also.

The rest of the major newspapers are just OK or worse. The Columbus Dispatch is alright as is the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Akron Beacon-Journal has gone downhill after it was sold. The Youngstown Vidicator and Cincinnati Enquirer are aweful.

The Stryker Sun-Times, hands down.

Hometown bias - The Akron BJ.  I read the PD at times... I just don't like there reporting style compared to the Beacon's.  I've always thought the Beacon has done a good job of presenting the news.

Circleville Herald for small-town bullshit gossip. I got in some trouble with the law in Reynoldsburg while living in the City of Columbus and somehow it ended up in their "Vital Statistics" section. I hadn't lived in Pickaway County for years, but my folks do, and no, they don't normally report Columbus violations in the paper. What do they do, index the high school yearbooks against all police records in Ohio?

Akron BJ, hehe.

What started all of the jokes about Stryker? lol

After reading this thread, I was wondering where in the top 100 US newspapers did the Ohio papers stand and figured others may be interested:

21.  Cleveland Plain Dealer          450,875

33.  Columbus Dispatch              352,510

41.  Cincy Enquirer/Post            293,151

74.  Akron Beacon Journal          170,870

75.  Dayton Daily News              168,645

77.  Toledo Blade                        167,686

I was surprised to see Columbus with a larger circulation than Cincinnati's dual papers.

^because people in cincy are more smart and realize that they can get all the content online without spending a dime.

Having online content for free is great, but there is no replacement for everything that is "getting the paper".

Newspaper circulation is a good way to measure a city's market reach (and how much/little nearby cities cut into sales). Cleveland clearly is a larger market than the other two C's. It handily outsells everyone in Ohio, even with the BJ just 30 minutes away posting respectable numbers.

Plus, you have the daily Lake County News Herald and the two dailies in Lorain County -- the Lorain Morning Journal and Elyria Chronicle Telegram.

And, let's not forget Sun Newspapers, which is the largest chain of suburban weeklies in the nation, offering 25 papers in the Greater Cleveland area. It's weekly circulation is nearly 200,000!

Cincinnati's papers are both from the same media source (Gannett Company), so they're not exactly "dual newspapers" in the traditional sense, hence why their numbers are always posted together.

Although the Post relies on the Enquirer (Gannett) through their operating agreement that is about to expire, isn't the Post owned and operated by Scripps?

I wonder if the Kentucky Post is included in the "Cincinnati Enquirer/Post" numbers...they're all part of the same Newspaper Borg, but if the KY Post numbers are not included, then a significant portion of the immediate metro down here is sucked off...

Although the Post relies on the Enquirer (Gannett) through their operating agreement that is about to expire, isn't the Post owned and operated by Scripps?

Indeed...the Enquirer does all the publishing and ad sales for the Post...and I believe the Post used to be the stronger paper, but now it's an also-ran, about to go under when the Enquirer pulls the plug on the collaborative agreement they have...

Keep in mind, the Columbus Dispatch doesn't just go to Metro Columbus but as far away as Marietta and Marion.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

All of Columbus's media angles its reach towards SE Ohio.  Those are the potential clientele of Columbus's schools, businesses, retail, restaurants, housing, etc...
