Posted January 25, 200718 yr I forgot all about this. Cool stuff! Cleveland's new hockey team will be Monsters 2:13 p.m. Cleveland’s new pro hockey team will be nicknamed the Lake Erie Monsters, it was announced at a news conference today at Quicken Loans Arena. The logo's colors are red and black with blue water. A black monster with golden-yellow eyes is coming out of the water. The Monsters will begin play in the 2007-08 season as an American Hockey League affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. The previous pro hockey franchise in Cleveland, the AHL’s Barons, played five seasons here through 2005-06 before relocating to Worcester, Mass. The Barons were the top affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. Early last year, the Cavaliers ownership group bought the AHL’s dormant franchise in Utah. The ownership group, headed by Dan Gilbert, unveiled the nickname, logo and colors at a news conference attended by fans and media that featured a video presentation. — Dennis Manoloff, [email protected] More at http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer
January 26, 200718 yr That's awesome, but shouldn't the water be brown? Or at least on fire. I'm pre-ordering my Lake Erie Monsters gear this very instant. Coolest team name/logo this side of the Toledo Mud Hens and Lansing Lug Nuts.
January 26, 200718 yr and to think we were so close to "the fighting walleye" Have you been talking to my wife? She said the exact same thing when I told her. I like that the name is not so Cleveland-centric. Gives the team more of a regional fan base. They did a nice job with the logo too.
January 26, 200718 yr From the HFboards.com forum on 1/10/07: No name has been announced as of yet. A search of the US Patent office shows Cavaliers Hockey Holdings has trademarked 2 names: "Fighting Walleye" and "Lake Erie Monsters". One of those could ultimately be the name or neither. Personally, I prefer "Lake Erie Breakers". Until Cleveland Pro Hockey makes an announcement, all we can do is speculate. They have not said formally when it would be announced, but I've heard the end of the month floating around. http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=318049&page=3

January 27, 200718 yr tonights pick up line, "wanna see my lake erie monster"? would probably work better while at edgewater or something I've been using the "walleye" variant for years with much success.

May 7, 200718 yr Joe Sacco is such an awesome name--I think be going to these games now! Even though its not offical, could we rename this thread "Cleveland Lake Erie Monsters?" It just flows better with the rest of the topic headings. (and give s a shout out to Cleveland, hey hey!)

January 23, 201015 yr We must have lost this thread in the great UO cleansing. IMO, one of Cleveland's best kept secrets: Lake Erie Monsters entertain record-setting crowd with overtime win By Dennis Manoloff January 23, 2010, 12:52AM Lake Erie Monsters broke the franchise attendance record Friday night as 18,626 crowded into The Q to watch the Monsters beat the Texas Stars in a 5-4 overtime thriller. It was Shaquille O’Neal bobblehead night. The Monsters defeated the Texas Stars, 5-4, Friday night in overtime in front of 18,626 patrons and 10,000 Shaquille O'Neals at The Q. The Shaq bobblehead giveaway helped produce the largest crowd in the three-season history of the franchise. It also ranks number five on the American Hockey League's all-time list for regular-season attendance. The Monsters' previous high was 17,627 (April 11, 2009). January 23, 201015 yr It always seemed weird that Cleveland, of all places given the weather, does not have an NHL team. I suppose the reasoning might be that we could not support both an NBA and NHL team (like Pittsburgh and Buffalo only have one)... and I would MUCH rather have an NBA team. But I think it could work if they played their games more in the middle of the MSA... like the Cavs used to. Was Richfield Coliseum demo'ed?
January 23, 201015 yr I went to the game last night and was completely amazed by the crowd. The size of it was one thing, but everyone in attendance seemed to be really into the game and had knowledge of what was happening. It was only my second Monsters game, the other one was a Friday night game in November, and they had covered the seating in the upper deck. The fight within the first 5 minutes of the game energized the crowd, and when we left in the third the Monsters were up 4 - 0, and saw the overtime winner at Harry Buffalo. I've played hockey my whole life and never did understand why Cleveland never had an NHL team. And as long as the Blue Jackets are in Columbus we'll never see one here.

The Barons merged with the North Stars to keep both teams alive although, they officially moved to Minnesota and kept the North Stars name and historical records.

I'm aware of the Barons and their history. It was a typo above, I meant to say "Cleveland has never had an NHL team in my lifetime"
January 25, 201015 yr NHL doesn't even get that many people for most games!! I know. I was just going to say these are NHL numbers, not minor league hockey! Hey, maybe Cleveland should get an NHL team... Would never happen with the Blue Jackets in Columbus who are struggling as it is. I kind of wish both the Cincy and Cleveland WHA teams would've worked out in the 1970's and merged with the NHL. Would've been a great hockey rivalry. I remember going to Clones and Ducks vs. Lumberjack games and you'd usually get quite a few people to come down from Cleveland.
January 26, 201015 yr The Cleveland Steamers will take the NHL by storm! hahaha I can only imagine what the logo will look like.
January 26, 201015 yr All Ohio professional teams should be moved to Northeast Ohio so they can get the fan support they deserve. Bengals to Akron/Canton; Blue Jackets to the Q (Cleveland), and Crew to Akron. Maybe leave the Reds in SW Ohio, but move them to Dayton, Columbus and Cincy could share them, might even get a sell out every few years.
January 26, 201015 yr Although I love the fact the Monsters drew such a large crowd, keep in mind they had a few promotions that really helped attendance (a Shaq bobblehead - which brought in some Cavs fans just for the souvenir, and $1 hot dog and soda night - eat for cheap!).
February 5, 201015 yr Lake Erie's midseason run lands them in an AHL playoff slot: Monsters Insider By Cliff Pinckard February 05, 2010, 8:00AM The Monsters did more than win a game Wednesday night at The Q. They crossed a chasm for the franchise. Lake Erie's 3-2 victory over Rochester pushed it past Abbotsford and into fourth place in the Western Conference's North Division. The top four in the conference's two divisions qualify for the Calder Cup playoffs. Both divisions feature seven teams. The Monsters (23-23-0-4) never had been in a playoff slot this deep into any of their three AHL seasons. http://www.cleveland.com/monsters/index.ssf/2010/02/lake_eries_midseason_run_lands.html

October 9, 201014 yr The Lake Erie Monsters won their home opener last night in front on a surprisingly large crowd after starting the game down 0-2. The last goal was scored with 17 min left in the 3rd period giving the monsters a 3-2 victory: Lake Erie Monsters come back with a comeback win in season opener Published: Saturday, October 09, 2010, 1:13 AM Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — The young Monsters put on a show for the opening-night crowd of 12,524 at The Q on Friday. They played hard and fast in crafting a stirring comeback victory over the Syracuse Crunch, 3-2. "I told the guys that if we were fast and physical, everything else would take care of itself," Monsters coach David Quinn said. "And I liked our mental toughness and attitude. We didn't get too high or too low." Right winger Matt Ford won it with a quick shot from the slot at 17:02 of the third period. Ford gathered the puck, turned and zipped it past Crunch goalie Timo Pielmeier. http://www.cleveland.com/monsters/index.ssf/2010/10/lake_erie_monsters_come_back_w.html
