Our Columbus affiliate is beating the Tampa affiliate in the AHL playoffs right now ? (check NHL playoffs if context is needed).   Monsters take 2-0 lead in opening round of 2019 Calder Cup

  • The CBJ and the Cleveland Monsters announced a multi-year extension to their current AHL affiliate agreement:

  • Monsters lead league in attendance. https://www.news5cleveland.com/sports/local-sports/cleveland-monsters-have-highest-attendance-average-in-ahl-for-good-reason

Lake Erie swept the Charlotte Checkers last week on the back of some good goaltending from Brad Thiessen.  This is the second straight year that the veteran AHL/ECHL goalie has saved the Jackets' AHL affiliate.  Last year in Springfield, Forsberg was injured and Dansk ineffective.  This year in Lake Erie, both Korpisalo and Forsberg got called up to Columbus for injury replacement.

Thiessen has given LEM a chance to make the playoffs.  Going into this week's games, LEM occupies the final AHL Western Conference playoff spot.

The current Lake Erie Monsters split a weekend series against the former Lake Erie Monsters (aka San Antonio Rampage).  Many of the players who played in Cleveland last season, when LEM was affiliated with the Colorado Avalanche, gave the current Columbus Blue Jackets affiliated team a couple of close entertaining games:  http://www.jacketscannon.com/2016/2/22/11081554/lake-erie-splits-two-at-home-with-san-antonio

The first game featured this high-energy fight en route to a come-from-behind 4-3 OT win by Lake Erie:

The second game, which was broadcast on FSO, featured one of the more unusual storylines you'll see.  For the first 58 minutes, zero goals were scored.  Then LEM super-prospect Oliver Bjorkstrand blasted a goal at the 58:15 mark.  Then a hooking penalty seven seconds later put San Antonio on the power play.  SAR pulled their goalie for an extra attacker to go up 6 to 4 men.  But LEM defender John Ramage managed a long-range empty-netter to go up 2-0 with 1:21 remaining.

But then SAR scored two goals in the final minute to send it to overtime.  After a scoreless OT, SAR won the shootout.  So for the first 58 minutes of regulation, zero goals were scored.  Then in the final 2 minutes of regulation, four goals were scored.  Also, LEM honored Cleveland's hockey history by wearing these sweet-looking Cleveland Barons jerseys:

The Lake Erie Monsters begin their playoffs Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks-affiliate Rockford IceHogs.  The Monsters ended their season strong, going 9-1-1 in their last 11 games and winning 4 out of their last 5 games to finish second in their division.

Below is a playoff preview for the best-of-five series.  The first two games are at Rockford on Wednesday and Thursday.  Then back in Cleveland for a Saturday game followed by two if necessary games on Monday (4/25) and Thursday (4/28):

http://www.jacketscannon.com/2016/4/18/11446406/ahl-playoff-preview-lake-erie-monsters-vs-rockford-icehogs

Does anyone know if any of the monster playoff are on tv?

Lake Erie swept the Rockford series 3-0.  And convincingly so, winning 5-2 and 5-1 in Rockford then winning 5-3 back in the Q on Saturday.  The Monsters are red-hot right now.  They've won 12 of their last 14 games, including its last six in a row:  http://www.jacketscannon.com/2016/4/24/11496408/monsters-sweep-first-round-playoff-series

The whole team is contributing with 16 different players recording at least one goal or assist.  Many of the young Jackets prospects are leading the way.  Joonas Korpisalo won all three games in the net.  Josh Anderson got a hat trick in game 2 and four goals total in the series.  And newest prospect, 18-year-old d-man Zach Werenski, got 2 goals and 1 assist while skating on the top defensive line with Dean Kukan.

Lake Erie will face the winner of the Milwaukee/Grand Rapids series in a best-of-seven division final.

Does anyone know if any of the monster playoff are on tv?

They haven't announced any playoff games on TV yet.  The Monsters did have some regular season games on STO, FSO and locally on WUAB-43.

I wouldn't expect any playoff games on STO because the Indians games are a conflict now.  It might be possible for FSO - despite the Reds games conflict - because FSO has an additional channel available.  No idea if WUAB-43 might pick some playoff games up.

Next round of the AHL Playoffs (Western Conference Semifinal) starts tonight.  The Jackets Cannon LEM reporter has a preview of this series:  http://www.jacketscannon.com/2016/5/1/11542024/ahl-playoff-preview-lake-erie-monsters-vs-grand-rapids-griffins

Game 3: Sunday, May 8th, @ Grand Rapids (Van Andel Arena), 4 p.m. EDT

Game 4: Tuesday, May 10th, @ Grand Rapids, 7 p.m. EDT

Game 6 (if necessary): Monday, May 16th, @ Grand Rapids, 7 p.m. EDT

Game 7 (if necessary): Tuesday, May 17th, @ Lake Erie, 7 p.m. EDT

The LEM reporter also said in the comments section that Game 5 will be televised locally on WUAB-TV Channel 43 (if it’s played, obviously).

Cant wait to head over there Sat. Go Monsters!!

Monsters looked sluggish early last night and both teams were sloppy early in the game.  The Monsters looked a bit more composed in the 2nd and went ahead 2-1 before giving the lead away later in the period.  The amazing thing about this game is how many chances Grand Rapids had late in the third.  They were pressing hard and were awarded a penalty shot in the final minute which they could not convert.  Lake Erie seemed to lose their legs late in the game.

In the OT Grand Rapids scored what seemed to be the winning goal very early in the period but the goal was disallowed due to the puck being batted into the net by a hand.  Another lucky break for the Monsters.  A lot of blown chances by Grand Rapids led to an eventually winner by Lake Erie.  Grand Rapids is a much tougher match up than Rockford was, but if we can get two wins at home we'll be in great shape.

WOW!  The first two games of the Lake Erie/Grand Rapids series have been some amazing playoff hockey.  Hootenany gave you the Thursday OT win recap (with the regulation penalty shot and OT disallowed goal).  Today, they just finished Game Two at the Q.

LEM took an early 2-0 lead.  But then GRG scored the next three to lead 3-2 going into the third period.  It was still 3-2 with under six minutes left, when team captain Ryan Craig got a tying goal.  Then LEM's leading scorer Daniel Zaar got a go-ahead goal with 3:14 remaining.

But it wasn't over yet.  GRG went on the power-play with only 2:04 left in the third.  GRG pulled their goalie to go up two-men and tried and tried and tried for the equalizing goal.  But it never came, and Lake Erie held on for the 4-3 win to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Game 3 is tomorrow at Grand Rapids (4 p.m.)

Glad to see the MOnsters wake up in the 3rd. They let in a goal with just 3 sec left in the 1st period. That seemed to take a lot of wind out of their sails. Fun time.

Lake Erie nearly got their second series sweep in the Calder Cup Playoffs last night.  The Monsters were up 4-1 with less than a minute remaining in the second period and appeared on their way to sweeping Grand Rapids and going to the Western Conference Finals.  But then Grand Rapids pulled off a season-saving comeback, eventually scoring the game-winning goal with only 1:55 left in the third period to give them a 5-4 win.

Box Score:  http://theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1015863

Lake Erie still holds a 3-1 series lead.  Game 5 is back in Cleveland on Saturday.

Lake Erie jumped out to a 3-0 series lead on Grand Rapids.  Then, in Game 4, the Monsters were less than a minute from taking a 4-1 into the second period.  A series swap looked likely.  Then, nothing seemed to go right.  GR ended up winning Game 4.  Then on Saturday in the Q, GR dominated LEM with a 6-1 win in Game 5.

Game 6 is tonight at 7 p.m. at Grand Rapids.  Let's hope that the Monsters can right the ship and close out this series!

If a Game 7 is needed, there's a twist.  Originally, Game 7 was scheduled to be played on Tuesday back in the Q.  However, on Tuesday, the Q is now hosting a little thing called "Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals".  Then, on Wednesday, the Q is hosting another little thing called "a Carrie Underwood concert".  So if a Game 7 between Lake Erie and Grand Rapids is necessary, if would instead be played at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on Wednesday.

The Lake Erie Monsters did it!  They won Game 6 in Grand Rapids tonight and advance to the Western Conference Finals in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

But it wasn't easy.  Grand Rapids took a 3-1 lead at 1:48 into the second period.  Lake Erie then replaced starting goaltender Korpisalo (who gave up 3 goals on only 9 shots) with Anton Forsberg.  The Monsters fought back with a goal later in the second and another goal at 1:43 into the third period to tie it 3-3.

Lake Erie made it difficult on themselves by giving Grand Rapids three power-plays in the third.  Then Lake Erie got a power-play with 21 seconds remaining in the third.  But neither team could get a game-winning goal in regulation.  And so, playoff overtime hockey!

Lake Erie didn't cash in on the remainder of their power-play time in OT.  Then, Lake Erie had to kill off another power-play in overtime.  But then, with 7:28 remaining in the OT period, 18-year-old defenseman Zach Werenski scored the game-winning and series-winning goal!!!

Glad there's no game 7. I'm not sure if the Monsters lose their superpowers having to play so far away from Lake Erie!

As much fun as a Lake Erie Game 7 in Nationwide Arena might have been - (reports were that the lower bowl completely sold out and only upper deck tickets were available - so attendance would have been at minimum 12,000) - I'm happier they won it last night.  No need to stress us out!

Yeah, real life is stressful enough!

Agreed.

Worried a bit about attendance for the next round.

Looks like they are all on weeknights, if I read it correctly.

Another win last night puts Lake Erie up 2-0 in the series!  The next three are at home so get your tickets now!

Great news!

The only negative here is how LEM is getting screwed on game days and times.

Seems like even the Arena Football League team has priority over hockey.

The other AHL series is Hershey and Toronto, also a best-of-7.  Toronto gets 4 home games if it goes all the way to 7, but Hershey hosted the first two games.  Very bizarre scheduling in the AHL due to arena scheduling conflicts and such.

Very Stable Genius

2 periods away from making it to the finals.

Yep, another Cleveland entity contending for a title in 2016 -- onward to the FINALS!!

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Lukas Sedlak scored in the second overtime on Thursday night at The Q to give the Lake Erie Monsters a 2-1 victory over the Ontario Reign to complete a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven Western Conference title.

The Monsters advance to the Calder Cup Finals against either the Hershey Bears or the Toronto Marlies. The Bears hold a 3-0 lead in that series. Game 4 is on Friday in Toronto.

The Monsters became the first pro hockey team from Cleveland to advance to the finals since the 1965-66 Cleveland Barons. The Barons, however, lost in six games to the Rochester Americans. The Cleveland Barons last won a Calder Cup championship in 1964.

Although, I see dates are not finalized yet.

The tickets are a great price. Love the lower corners!!

BTW, how to we get this thread to be renamed "Cleveland: Lake Erie Monsters Discussion."  I find myself missing threads without the ultimate buzz word of 'Cleveland,' as it was dropped somewhere along the way during a thread merger.

OKC-GS delaying official game days and times.

Game 4 isn't until Saturday, so plenty of time for hockey fans in the whole state to plan a trip.

Quite bizarre Cleveland.com does not have the Monsters on their main page being one game away?  Go there right now, and see how long it takes you to find the story from above.

Man, someone is missing the boat over there.  Similar to how they didn't send any beat reporters to cover some the Tribe away series this year: http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2016/04/12/the-cleveland-plain-dealer-is-not-sending-beat-reporters-to-indians-road-games/
