January 26, 200718 yr wow, excellent. when did you go? whatr great markets, i can see you can eat very well there. how were the restaurants? the first half looked more modern than i would have thought. the streetscapes on the last half reminded me a lot of mexico.
January 27, 200718 yr WOW "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 27, 200718 yr Nice shots. I actually really liked how you showed the bathroom shots, as they exposed some of the poverty the beautiful country faces. I love the food but I don't think I'd care to visit anytime soon.
January 27, 200718 yr Wonderful photos and subjects. Looks like you covered a lot of ground and saw a lot of variety. I suspect a lot of U.S. visitors would only stay in Bangkok and not venture into the hinterlands to experience more of Thai culture. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 27, 200718 yr MRNYC - I went from 1-9-2007 to 1-25-2007. I only ate at a few restaurants. In one of them, I took my shoes off, climbed a ladder, and sat on the floor at a low table on the upper story. It seemed that the food in restaurants was the same as that served on the street. The nicer restaurants serve water in glass bottles, instead of plastic ones. (You can't drink the tap water.) American chains such as Starbucks, McDonalds, DQ, and KFC are also represented. Thailand is considered 2nd world, or developing. There are 1st world areas and 3rd world areas. This photo set leaned a little 3rd world, in particular because of a few slum photos near the canal. The inhabitants were tribal people, probably immigrants from Myanmar, dressed in beautiful handmade clothing - sorry, I did not feel comfortable photographing the people. I went out of my way to get those shots, and most visitors aren't aware of that area. I asked around and found that it is not typical of Chaing Mai. I spent most of my time in the older areas of town. By contrast, there are large areas of Chiang Mai that were built in the last 20 years that look like typical American development. edale - Glad you liked the bathroom shots. I have more. And you should visit if you get the chance. The newer hotels have western style bathrooms.
January 27, 200718 yr Looks like someone needs rubber sidewalks!!! LMAO I thought of you when I saw that. I think it has kind of a cool effect though :]
January 27, 200718 yr Thailand is great, thanks for reminding me of my trip. I also went to the Karen tribe village, I had a pic with the woman from the tribe with the most rings around her neck...like 26 or something...but I can't find it. The bathrooms along the road in the country are built by the government to try and get the tribes to use them instead of being nomadic and moving on after the land is used up. The Thai govt is very good at trying to preserve those tribes culture, while giving them some tools to help the villages stay and thrive in one spot. I found a couple pics from my trip...an abandoned construction project in the new part of Bangkok. In the early/mid nineties the market there was hot for foriegn investors, then the boom stopped and many developers walked away from huge projects. Also, I found one pic from the Myanmar border.
January 27, 200718 yr Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread, but I found a couple more interesting pics... Crossing Myamar/Thailand border...Myanmar left, Thailand right A street scene in Hanoi Vietnam that I liked. A motorbike with pigs strapped to the back on a country road to Ha Long bay in N Vietnam. The pigs are alive btw
January 28, 200718 yr Excellent shots, you really captured the life of these places well. It's crazy to see all the "noise" you get in these types of views with the advertisments, pedestrian activity, etc.
January 29, 200718 yr Wow, I have wondered what Bangkok looks like... matches my mental image of what I though Vietnam would look like. Thanks for the tour!
January 29, 200718 yr Looks like someone needs rubber sidewalks!!! LMAO I thought of you when I saw that. I think it has kind of a cool effect though :] Funny I thought, damn someone has shaky hands. Other than that, nice photos.
January 30, 200718 yr I knew Bangkok had changed a lot since I lived there 19 years ago, but I was surprised at how built up Chaing Mai is. Thanks for the skyline views. But thanks also for focusing on the older parts, which look much the same. I have a framed photo of myself at the wheel of a tuk-tuk, with my mother in the passenger seat (while my wife haggled with the driver over the fare back to the hotel).
