Posted February 1, 200718 yr Lately urbanohio.com forum has been very slow to load, open a thread, move to another page or post a reply. I've noticed this off and on for a few days, now. I have a fast connection (5mpbs down/2mbps up), and at the time that I'm experiencing this problem I don't have any difficulty with other sites. It occurs even during off hours, when SSP responds very quickly. At around 8:30 this morning the forum was responding about the way SSP does in mid-afternoon, when people are bored at work. This is a recent change; urbanohio.com forums previously have loaded almost instantly for me.
February 1, 200718 yr Our sql server is running slow right now. It shouldnt be anymore than that. We do have more active members than we've ever had before, maybe we can look into getting a dedicated server.
February 1, 200718 yr ...We do have more active members than we've ever had before, maybe we can look into getting a dedicated server. That's a nice problem to have. Congrats, gents. (By the way, it's running fine for me).
February 1, 200718 yr We do have more active members than we've ever had before, maybe we can look into getting a dedicated server. My appologies  I leave UO up and running almost all day, and I've been posting quite a bit (LMAO)
March 22, 200718 yr I'd say it's probably due to the 250+ yahoo spiders indexing the forum, along with 50+ users being online too.
March 31, 200718 yr You guys probably already fixed the problem - but just in case - here's a little something you can add to your robots.txt file: You can add a "Crawl-delay: xx" instruction, where "xx" is the minimum delay in seconds between successive crawler accesses. If the crawler rate is a problem for your server, you can set the delay up to 60 or 300 or whatever value is comfortable for your server. Setting a crawl-delay of 20 seconds for yahoo! Slurp would look something like: User-agent: Slurp Crawl-delay: 20 http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/slurp/slurp-03.html
March 31, 200718 yr ^ I had to do that to a client of mine. You would not believe how much faster the site ran just because of that! You may also want to optimize the tables and repair them, if they have not already. Especially with this forum script and phpBB, the database is already well bloated so any efficiency gains are real nice (I disassemble forums for fun!). Trust me, you do not want a dedicated server. They are _expensive_ and offer very little returns. Those should be reserved for businesses and corporations, not forums where you should not be generating that much peak load -- not saying Urban Ohio is not popular, but it isn't sending massive amounts of data to and from. If you do want to go that route, semi-dedicated may work as well.

Don't know if it's helping or not because I havent been online much in the last week. And the forum is set to optimize and repair everyday by it's self.

It's nice to have the forum indexed......but come on, 250 spiders at the same time is crazy.

If you do want to go that route, semi-dedicated may work as well. QFT. But from what else I've read, I guess we'll have to live with our new friends "spiders on a forum". As I send data here I get random slowdowns. Its annoying yes, but nothing to get wound up about :)
April 27, 200718 yr The site appears to be much slower in the AM thatn PM. It is almost useless right now. Just got this message: Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. assuming this is Some Mother F....... ?
April 27, 200718 yr Its taking about 15-30 seconds on average to load each new page...VERY frustrating!
April 27, 200718 yr Yep, pretty sluggish today. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 27, 200718 yr I too have noticed the sluggishnish the past few days. I'll allempt to find an answer or solution.
April 28, 200718 yr do we know who else shares the server? perhaps something that is taking bandwidth/processing power during weekdays, but not so much on the weekends or evenings. does the hosting SLA provide for a certain response time or transfer rate?
April 29, 200718 yr Our host is having cgi and mysql issues. It looks like they upgraded their cgi servers which caused the mysql servers to slow down a great deal. They are looking into fixing the issue soon, but did not give a date. For now, I turned off guest viewing of the fourm. So everyone must log in to view posts. This will hopefully keep the spiders off the forum and speed it up a bit.....will probably allow guests to view posts when things speed up. Also, I am looking in to possibly getting a VPS for the site. It will hopefully keep things running smooth for a long time. The downside is the cost. Right now we pay $8 a month for hosting, the VPS will be about $50 a month. I would be open with hosting a couple other sites along with UO to split the costs if anyone is interested.
April 29, 200718 yr What host are you currently with, and what are your bandwidth requirements? We have been with powweb.com, which gives us more than enough space and bandwith. Currently we use between 50 and 100 GB's per month.
May 24, 200718 yr Sorry about the forums performance the past couple days, our host is again having issues with the sql server our forum is on. It seems like they have it fixed now though.
May 24, 200718 yr ^Thank goodness...I just quit trying for a little while. It was quite frustrating. Glad to see the forum functioning again!
May 28, 200718 yr been REALLY slow for me as well......and this is the only site that does tat to me right now... :?
May 29, 200718 yr Our host is again having issues with our sql server. There is nothing we can do about it. I'm just as frustrated as you guys about it.
June 1, 200718 yr I'm about to order a VPS for the site and forum because the forum has been off and on for the past week. I don't have the cash to pay for it up front for a full year, so I might buy a month package see if we can get everything up and running, then have a donation drive to pay for a year. The cost is $40 per month and you can host other sites and can resell. So if anyone wants to go in half, let me know.
June 1, 200718 yr VPS? For a forum? I would consider seriously switching hosts. I've hosted some large web-sites via 1and1 on their basic package; speed and SQL speeds are top notch.
June 1, 200718 yr VPS? For a forum? I would consider seriously switching hosts. I've hosted some large web-sites via 1and1 on their basic package; speed and SQL speeds are top notch. Urbanohio started out on 1&1 and everything about them was horrible. How big were these sites that were hosted on a shared platform? We usually don't come close to the posted limits of our current host, it's just that this downtime is getting out of hand. I've found another webhost that will credit our time remaining here to move to them. I can get a regular plan with them and move up to a VPS if need be.
June 2, 200718 yr Agonizing doesn’t begin to describe this site this past week. Go ahead and order a month package and try it out. If it works out, I will pledge 1/2 of the balance and challenge another to pledge the other 1/4. It is a small price to pay for a site that we all enjoy visiting.

There are three plans we can choose from: Basic plan: 6.95 month Business plan: 21.95 month VPS: 40 month We could try the basic plan out first and see if it fits our need. It is very similar to the plan we have now.
