February 6, 200718 yr i like college hill. one of my fav 'hoods for sure! :-) i dont think its ugly! :| nice pics though.
February 6, 200718 yr Maybe I've given people somewhat of a false perception of College Hill based on these pictures. I think that the biggest problem with College Hill is that it looks more abandoned than it is. There are a lot of black owned businesses such as restaurants, barber shops, hair salons, urbanwear, recording studios, art galleries etc that are sustaining. But when I did a business inventory for my project I noticed the names of the businesses on the awnings are often different from what's on the window. Its also interesting that College Hill has an average income level closely matching the national average. The new Linden Park development is going up soon and the neighborhood isn't at all threatened by it and they really don't have a reason to. A really nice guy pulled me into his store (American Heritage Flooring) and talked to me a little about the neighborhood, saying that awnings, llack of streetlights and vacant buildings (which were decreased) are attributed to their past crime problem. I found it interesting that he mentioned awnings; they're a very pedestrian friendly element but they also enable drug dealers to endure the weather. I think College Hill manages to be a fairly good neighborhood because so many people that actually live in the community have a vested interest in the same community through business. Can't really say the same about Main street in OTR.
February 6, 200718 yr Wow...I'm actually pretty surprised by those census figures on College Hill when compared to the city and region. Much more positive than what I would have expected. On another note: What the crack-a-lack is up with that pano at the end...hopefully you corrected that green pic and b/w pic to make the pano to better
February 6, 200718 yr The PNC Bank pic isn't black and white; thats the real color of the building. I rushed the panoramic though.
February 6, 200718 yr ^the whole pic w/PNC bank is in grayscale though...the streetsign isn't green, the sidewalk color is off...the bldg may be that color but the rest of the image is not. Either way...I just found it slightly amusing!
February 6, 200718 yr and by amusing you mean laughable, and by laughable you mean pathetic. Gotcha. The panoramic was meant to give a general feel of the neighborhood. It didn't have to be anywhere near perfect.
February 6, 200718 yr ^you said it...not me! But yeah...mine was far from perfect when I did the project as well...I'll see if I can post it for you or send it to you.
February 6, 200718 yr Goodies has the blues ! But I see color in the PNC Bank bldg. I am surprised at the demographics as well. It seems to have fallen a lot more in the 90's. Glad it is on the upswing. I don't know if a photograph can quite capture the feeling one gets going through the neighborhood just west of the business district with all the little frame houses.
February 6, 200718 yr Where's the chicken/collard greens/mac n cheese at? "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 6, 200718 yr A restaurant called "Sisters". The food is really good (and cheap as hell too). Service is kinda slow because they have carryout and catering but the people are really nice.
February 7, 200718 yr A restaurant called "Sisters". The food is really good (and cheap as hell too). Service is kinda slow because they have carryout and catering but the people are really nice. I know Sisters. I was just wondering, as Manhattan West kinda left an open void of soul food (besides...Ritchie's, Sister's, and Alabama's [don't say Ollie's]). February 7, 200718 yr Manhattan West was really good. They had the best porkchops. I wonder why they went out of business.. Their space was huge, maybe they couldn't keep up with the rent or something, but they seemed really successful. I use to go to Ritchies in Bond Hill for lunch in h.s. b/c it was pretty much the only place to go but its basically just fast food. There use to be a little place by Montgomery and Woodburn ave. they were pretty good; it was vacant last time I checked though. Where is Alabamas?

February 8, 200718 yr besides...Ritchie's, Sister's, and Alabama's [don't say Ollie's]) ^ Colday, is that really all the soulfood places here in Cincy?
February 8, 200718 yr Nah, there are quite a few more (R&L's, a couple of places along Hamilton Ave, Ike's in Evanston, etc). Those are just the more "known" ones. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 8, 200718 yr Where is Alabamas? Yup...in OTR, right on Liberty and ?? (just west of Vine). Either way, if you go past there most afternoons there is a line wraped around the sidewalk! And hey if Snoop Dogg likes it, then its gotta be good!
February 11, 200718 yr Diagonally across from the beautiful building in photo no. 12 was an abandoned Kroger grocery store for many years. (Anyone know if it's still abandoned?) The empty parking lot, at College Hill's most important intersection, gives the neighborhood a disproportional feeling of emptyness. The kicker was that apparently Kroger was worried that a competitor would move into the building, so they made it difficult to re-use. College Hill, like Clifton, still retains many gaslights, which certainly adds to the charm. You can pick some out in the photos. Will College Hill become like Clifton?
February 12, 200718 yr Nice Crack a lack photos ;) Cracka lack? Theres plenty of white people in those photos.
February 25, 200718 yr Cincinnati did them the favor in 1911. I think the street cars came in the 1920s. The population in 1890 was barely anything, although there was a LOT of huuuggee mansions that ended up being torn down and replaced with early subdivisions.
February 25, 200718 yr Im pretty sure it failed. CH would have been built up way earlier. That hill was a huge barrier.
