My real life alias will be swimming 72 laps (a mile) at The Columbus Aquatic Center on March 4, 2007 to raise funds for the Central Ohio Diabetes Association as part of their 32nd Annual Swim for Diabetes Fundraiser.

As of today (February 6) I'm not only way past half way to my goal of $500 (I'll probably be upping my goal to $1,000 tomorrow)...I'M ALSO THE NUMBER FOUR FUNDRAISER OVER ALL (so far)!

I now challenge all my Urbanohio chums to keep me on top, and to take advantage of a unique opportunity to promote urbanohio.com. When you pledge me, you'll be able to dedicate the amount in the honor of an individual or institution.

Why not pledge in honor of UO?

It's quick and easy to do, and it'll make you feel all warm and tingly. So click to it: http://swimfordiabetes.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=216547&u=216547-163164349&e=943017843

Diabetes is a killer--especially among urban populations. Some of Central Ohio Diabetes Association's programs you'll be supporting:

1. Diabetes and nutrition education

2. Outreach programs to high risk populations

3. Community detection

4. Camp and youth programs

5. Social services

All proceeds from Swim for Diabetes remain in Central Ohio and benefit thousands in our community.

And oh yeah: it's tax deductable.

So pledge now: http://swimfordiabetes.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=216547&u=216547-163164349&e=943017843

Fish OUT!

Just curious: Its this for Type 1 or Type 2?

Just curious: Its this for Type 1 or Type 2?

It benefits all people with diabetes.

Sadly, as you may know, the incidence of type 2 is rising drastically in children, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle being huge contributors. One more strike against suburbia.

By the way, I'm currently the #1 fundraiser. Come join the winning team.

Just call me "Shillfish."

It benefits all people with diabetes.

Sadly, as you may know, the incidence of type 2 is rising drastically in children, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle being huge contributors. One more strike against suburbia.

Its unfortunate however that many people are unaware that there are two types of diabetes.  Many people think that diabetes is gotten through poor diet and bad health (type 2 as you addressed)...but many people with Type 1 are lumped into that same category (like myself).  Its unfortunate for people to be uninformed on this issue...especially when they believe it is within someone's control whether or not they get the disease.

Thanks to my beloved gene pool I have had it since I was 10...my dad since he was 8...grandpa the same.  It is definately an under publicized disease, one that we hopefully make great strides on in the near future (stem cell research sure would help...)

I appreciate the effort your putting towards this effort kingfish...this disease is near a breaking point, and can be cured in our lifetimes...keep on fighting!!!

^^Yeah, My sister has type 1 as well.  The two diseases have very little in common, but most people don't know that.  Nothing makes me madder than when someone tries to tell me that its my sister's fault that she has diabetes.  In order to fight the disease, my family and I are big into the Cincinnati Chapter of JDRF hopfully getting close to a cure.

Ditto on stem cells.

And thanks kingfish

I had no idea there were two types, although I'm pretty oblivious about medical kinds of things anyway, so I wouldn't have assumed anything if someone told me they had it.

I gave a little; I would have given more but my credit card bill is already hurting this month. You know us conservatives.

Good luck!

Thanks all, and let's keep the dialog going on diabetes (here and elsewhere).

The explosion of type 2 is a global problem, and exists at a confluence of a lot of lousy social forces. Minority populations are hit at an incredibly disproportionate rate, which crosses over into lower-income populations, too. When you look at the quality of foods sold in the 'hood--fast food, high-fructose corn syrup adultered grocery items, gas station cuisine--it's easy to see the affects of something I call Food Injustice.

It saddens me to hear type 1 folks are getting painted with the lazy brush. These are folks who are essentially born allergic to their own insulin.

Type 2 people lose the ability to produce and process insulin. It begins with a pre-disposition, and is exacerbated by poor health habits that used to take years to add up, hence its technical name "adult-onset" diabetes. Old-folks diabetes. That kids are racking up a lifetime's worth of damage before they hit their 20s is a sign that something drastically bad has happened with the way people live.

By the way, I know WAY too much about diabetes and insulin therapy. A good way to shut me up about it is to make me jump in a pool and swim a mile. Say...

By the way, big ups to Ink! He pledged a penny shy of $20 (that's not THAT conservative), and as a result, "urban ohio" now scrolls up the honor roll on my donations page. Check it out:

Any of you bleeding hearts wanna take the plunge? You know where to go.^

There are two types of Diabetes Mellitus, DM I and II, and although both types have different etiologies they both have very similar complications. DM I, or childhood diabetes/insulin dependent diabetes, is usually an autoimmune disorder that presents itself when the individual is between the ages of 2-30 years (usually under 18).  It often follows a viral infection in the child, when for some reason the body's own immune system begins attacking the beta-cells (the cells that make insulin) in the pancreas.  The beta-cells are not all killed at once, so sometimes the beginning of DM I isn't noticed for months or occasionally years after the initial infection.  The inheritance pattern among siblings is usually <10%.  UncleRando, there are other forms of DM I that can be inherited (as seems to be your case), but these are significantly rarer.

DM II on the other hand, which is often associated with obesity, high blood pressure, and the sedentary lifestyle actually has a sibling concurrence rate of slightly > 90%.  In adopted twin studies, twins that were adopted and seperated around birth and raised by different families with different lifestyles, also had this 90% concurrence rate (if one twin has it, 90% chance the other twin also has it).  This seems to indicate that there is a genetic predisposition to develop DM II.  No one gene has been pinpointed to be the cause, although numerous genes are believed to play a role, making this a multifactorial disease.  In other words, a person may have a number of genes that predisposes him to have DM II, but if he doesn't exercise and puts on even a little bit of weight it can be enough to push him into having diabetes.  Where as a person without these genes could put on a little bit of weight and still be capable of maintaining a normal blood sugar.  So, if you have a family history of DM II it would be to your advantage to try and not gain that extra weight, exercise, and watch what you eat.

The actual initial pathology of DM II is different from DM I.  In DM I the problem is your body doesn't make insulin any more, where as in DM II initially your pancreas makes insulin--but the cells of your body no longer respond to the insulin normally.  The insulin no longer causes the glucose in your blood to be taken up by the cells in your body that need the glucose for energy.  Thats the initial problem for DM II, and I can explain in more detail the step by step path if anybody is more interested.

How does insulin work?  Insulin is released by your pancreas when your body senses carbohydrates in your meal and blood stream.  The insulin acts to "pull" the glucose (sugar) from your blood into the cells of your body.  If there is no insulin in your blood or your body does not respond well to the insulin that is in your blood, those cells in your body are "starved" for energy and will take it from other sources other than glucose.  Also simply having too much glucose in your blood is very bad for the cells that line make up the lining of your blood vessels, causing damage, atherosclerotic plaques (stiff and cholesterol lined vessels), increase the chance of a plaque rupture/clot.  The damage to the vessels can lead to such problems as heart attacks/angina, certain types of strokes, decreased blood flow to legs causing sores and pain, damage to kidneys, and damage to the retina of the eye (diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the US).

If anybody has any more questions about DM, let me know I will be happy to try and answer them.

Make sure you tell us your time when you finish!  And thank you for swimming, in part, for my mother!

Make sure you tell us your time when you finish! And thank you for swimming, in part, for my mother!

If it goes as usual I'll clock in at about 23 minutes; I swim 5-7 miles a week on average, on my lunch hour mainly.

It's my pleasure to help, and keep those pledges coming! Another Urban Ohioan just pledged, but I can't put the real name with a screen name: come forward for your official tip o' the trunks.

EDIT: Turns out the guilty pledger is nun udder than RiverViewer. Consider the gauntlet thrown, people.

"urban ohio" now scrolls up the honor roll on my donations page.

I don't see it.  :|

To the right: it's a slow-loadin' java applet. It works in Firefox and Safari, at least.

I just chiped in $20...I had to out do inkaelin!

Came across this at work: pretty devastating rundown of diabetes stats. http://www.idf.org/home/index.cfm?node=37 The whole IDF (International Diabetes Federation) site is great, by the way.

Some selected hi-lites:

• Diabetes currently affects 246 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 380 million by 2025.

• Each year a further 7 million people develop diabetes.

• Each year 3.8 million deaths are attributable to diabetes. Every 10 seconds a person dies from diabetes-related causes.

• Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of global death by disease.

At least 50% of all people with diabetes are unaware of their condition. In some countries this figure may reach 80%.

• The devastating complications of diabetes, such as blindness, kidney failure and heart disease, are imposing a huge burden on healthcare services. It is estimated that diabetes accounts for between 5% and 10% of a nation's health budget.

• The human and economic costs of diabetes could be significantly reduced by investing in prevention, particularly early detection, in order to avoid the onset of diabetic complications.

Good luck Kingfish.  My dad has been a diabetic almost his entire life.  Its scarey and I wish that there was a cure.

Much love doing something instead of just runnin' off at the mouth!

The site won't let me donate $.02!!! :(

I guess they don't want my two cents worth.

Glutmax just tossed down $20.00, and having concerned myself with the needs of people with diabetes--and judging from his post above: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=11894.msg161118#msg161118, I'd say he knows from the cost of diabetes. Thanks Max!

So who's gonna take us to $100? http://swimfordiabetes.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=216547&u=216547-163164349&e=943017843

I just chiped in $20...I had to out do inkaelin!

I just raised it $5.01, who has been out done now?

[glow=black,2,300]$85.00[/glow]

I just plunked down $25.00 for the cause. And if I could, I'd like to request one lap doggie-paddle style.

I just plunked down $25.00 for the cause. And if I could, I'd like to request one lap doggie-paddle style.

I was going to doggie paddle all 72, but if you insist on just one lap...

Seriously, thanks CornerCurve.  Both my wife and I lost grandparents to complications from diabetes.

Urbanohio tot-board says: [glow=black,2,300]$110.00[/glow] But more important: who's gonna match CornerCurve's 25 smackers?

BUMP for the sole reason of calling out Coldayman for a pledge...and anybody willing to match.

I'm dangerously close to my goal ($120 away). Will urbanohio put me over the top?

I say YES!

I generally don't donate to specific causes, as I feel I should be doing more for EVERY cause, but I appreciate what you are doing.

But for what it's worth, you are using my and Rich's website to get your cause out. :)

So I'll put you down for $26?

Any pledge is appreciated. Even three tiny dots.

Really: thanks everyone (especially Rich and Colday). I'll only bump this thread again to thank UO pledges (I already have a shout out to urbanohio.com on my pledge page):

https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=216547&lis=1&kntae216547=38E36B99784E4C25952B3C8877BDCB63&supId=163164349

Again: big wet puddles of gratitude (you still have two more weeks to pledge).

There, it's a sticky.  HAPPY??!?! ;)

So happy I believe I just peed in the water.

more importantly how do you pronounce it:

Die-ah-bee-teas? (the normal way)

Die-ah-beet-iss (the wilford brimley way)

WilfordBrimley.jpg

congrats on reaching your goal.

  • 2 weeks later...

The swim went down this past Sunday, and it was a toughie. Thanks again, urbanohio. There's a "thanks y'all" post (and fresh pitch for more donations, natch) on my fundraising page here:

https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=216547&lis=1&kntae216547=8DF298BED55C47719C88E59275F7DFE2&supId=163164349

Again: thanks. You helped raise around $1500.00 for the good folks of Central Ohio living with diabetes.

Cheers!

Way go KingFish...you might just have to change your name to michael phelps.

Phelps is more fish than man. Whereas I am more manatee than man.

Regardless, thanks!

  • 1 year later...

BUMP!

I'm doing it again: your appropriately-named fellow forumer is participating in the Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA) Swim for Diabetes.

CODA is a wonderful organization providing real assistance to our neighbors in Central Ohio who are living with diabetes. This economy doesn't make giving any easier, but it sure doesn't make life any easier for people who need to manage their diabetes. Consider that the groups hit hardest by diabetes tend to be the hardest hit by bad economic times, and it really becomes a no-brainer.

Any gift will go to good use, but if you pledge a buck a lap or more (72 laps = 1 mile), I'll wear your name on me NASCAR style. Yes: your name, written in waterproof ink on kingfish out of water's surprisingly heavy body.

SPECIAL URBAN OHIO OFFER!

The last time I did this many Orbanohians came forward with pledges. Knowing we're in the midst of the annual pledge drive here, I hereby make this matching pledge:

For each individual Urban Ohio forumer who pledges me, I'll pledge $5 to Urban Ohio.

AND

Should the cumulative total of my pledges from my fellow forumers exceed $72, I'll display the Urbanohio.com logo prominently on my hood (in addition to the name of any individual who pledges $72 on their own, of course)!

Sounds reasonable, no?

Pledge NOW at my current CODA fundraising page: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=300345&lis=0&kntae300345=3073F4EA11034B76A44DC07E956897AD&supId=163164349

Let's do Urbanohio proud AND help the folks here in Central Ohio.

Thanks!

Like prayers to shorten my stay in Purgatory, can I get days off of my inevitable next banning instead?  :wink2:

^Now now, I've never banned you. (I'm only a moderator; only Admins can ban).

Nevertheless! DanB is the FIRST to pledge kingfish's swim for diabetes, and Urban Ohio is $5 richer for it!

So come on, you yellow-bellied liberals: pony up!

Pledge NOW at my current CODA fundraising page: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=300345&lis=0&kntae300345=3073F4EA11034B76A44DC07E956897AD&supId=163164349

Remember: a pledge for kingfish is a pledge of urbanohio! Give what you can, but above all else GIVE!

And KERSPLASH! AJ93 dives in with a generous pledge garnering him (and urbanohio.com) NASCAR-level sponsorship, and $5 more for the Urban Ohio fund. No sir: not too shabby at all.

:: Gets up on lawnchair, shouts "EVERYBODY INTO THE PLEDGE POOL!," does a massive cannonball ::

I don't need my name displayed. My donation comes at a different cost. I expect you to swim in the costume horns and all! Mu-ha-ha-haaaa

No, I didn't mean to imply that you were responsible!  Just covering all the bases.

Come on guys and gals,  redistribute the wealth!  The man's willing to jump in a pool of other peoples bodily fluids for a good cause!

Like Ohio? Hate diabates? Baby, your ship has come in. It's still not too late to pledge ole kingfish here in Sunday's Central Ohio Diabetes Association's Swim for Diabetes fundraiser. I'm zeroing in on my goal of $2,000 with barely $270 to go. Hey: your pledge could be the one that pushes me over the top. Check it out (and pledge):

https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=300345&lis=0&kntae300345=3073F4EA11034B76A44DC07E956897AD&supId=163164349

Pledge a little or pledge give a lot. Either way, urbanohio.com gets $5 per forumer who pledges me. So far with three formers pledging (DanB, AJ93 & ColDayMan) it's up to $15 (hey: times are skin tight, I know that), and while $15 is good, more is better.

Jump on in to this 100% dookie-free philanthropic enterprise.

Again: anything will be appreciated, and everything helps UO.

That link again: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=300345&lis=0&kntae300345=3073F4EA11034B76A44DC07E956897AD&supId=163164349

Thanks!

^I just gave so that I could even out that 72 cents.
