Posted February 12, 200718 yr I find myself without a job and with an old video camera borrowed from a friend. After reading a "moving to cleveland thread" http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=11923.0 where Cedar-Fairmount was suggested a couple times, I had the idea to go film it, since it's kind of a lesser-known neighborhood. The idea being if it didn't stink too bad, and if I still had the time and desire, I could film similar projects at various Cleveland area neighborhoods, with some narration perhaps. The result was unstatisfactory to me for a few reasons. The cold wreaked some havoc on the battery, and it's power problems late in the shoot rendered lots of the video a bit loopy and unusable. Second, February is arguably the worst month to film something in Cleveland since everything looks so....February. Though I knew this going in, I doubt I'll have time come summer to try again. The tradeoff is more vibrant color and street activity, but a tougher shot to get, with people either ducking out of your way or mugging for the lens. Third, an unsteady hand due to natural unsteadiness and onsetting frostbite makes using a tripod almost mandatory for a decent looking vid, which is a pain to lug around and set up on city streets. I didn't have time or a helper for that. Because of those factors I didn't bother to spend too much time cutting it together, but here's the loose concept, set to some dreamy winter music: ETA: Youtube is a little funky - some people haven't been able to view it yet, although I have at the above URL. Might be a matter of time for a short while. ETA: Seems to work now.
February 13, 200718 yr The music is very appropriate and set the mood. I haven't been to that area in a long time. A few years ago I saw a program on HGTV about the mansions that line the Boulevard.
February 13, 200718 yr worked for me. God if I had a dollar for every building pictured that I've woken up in, I'd be a rich man.
February 13, 200718 yr Very nice video of my old nabe! Sadly no shots of the Alcazar - they used to do a Sunday brunch that was pretty cheap - if you've never stepped inside, you're definitely missing out on a cool old lobby and courtyard. If you ask real nice, they'll let you check out the upstairs ballroom with views of downtown and University Circle - it's like stepping back in time. The rooms themselves are a bit shabby, and most of the building is a retirement center for Christian Scientists, but I survived living there for four months while working a temp job at CCF. If someone had a few million bucks to spare, it would be a great condo or luxury apartment conversion. www.thealcazar.com
