I had to call this storm something, so I'm calling it the St. Valentines Day Snowstorm. Calling it some foul language is another option, of course.

Here's a press release from Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson's office (has a nice photo at the link)...

February 13, 2007 – Mayor Frank Jackson is urging residents to stay off the roadways due to the winter storm.

City recreation centers will remain open until their regular hours. Men’s and Women’s shelters are prepared to accommodate anyone seeking shelter.

For health and medical emergencies please call 9-1-1 and for other emergencies residents can dial 2-1-1 for assistance.

The following tips can help you stay safe during extreme cold conditions:

• Keep walkways free of ice and snow. If you are not used to strenuous exercise and/or have heart problems, check with a doctor before shoveling snow.

• Don’t turn off the heat to save on utility bills. Hypothermia, a condition in which the body’s temperature drops below normal, can be fatal.

• Replace rubber tips on canes, walkers, and crutches. Home health care stores sell “ice picks” that fit on the ends of canes and walkers to provide extra traction.

• Understand your prescription drugs. Be aware that some medicines make people more susceptible to cold. Ask your doctor if you should be taking extra precautions.

• Choose portable heaters carefully. All heaters should be kept at least three feet from furniture and draperies to decrease risk of fire. Also, beware that heaters that use liquid fuel can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. For more information about space heaters contact the U.S. Product Safety Commission by phone at (800) 638-2772 or online at http://www.cpsc.gov.

• Set your water heater below 125 degrees. This will both save on utility bills and prevent scalding injuries, while keeping water warm enough for washing.

• Don’t let your pipes freeze. Check pipes to make sure they are insulated. Make sure you know how to shut off the water, if necessary.

• Check on your fragile neighbors and relatives. Offer to assist them with groceries and other basic needs that require outside trips.

• Have an emergency plan. Keep phone numbers for doctors and family members next to the phone, where they can be found easily. Keep three days’ supply of food on hand, in case you become ill and can’t go out. Be sure you have at least one telephone that does not need to be plugged into an electrical outlet; cordless phones won’t work in a power outage.

Mayor Jackson sent all non-essential employees home today at 3pm due to the winter storm. He also advised all government agencies to send their employees home and is encouraging businesses to do the same.

Yeah, now someone tell me how I'm supposed to make it home from London to Cleveland through Newark tomorrow.  I guess I should just go ahead and tell the GF right now.

Cleveland Hopkins Airport is open, but some flights are canceled and most of the rest are delayed. The storm should be done by about midday Wednesday and I suspect you'll be able to get back OK. You may have more trouble landing at Newark on-time, because the East Coast is getting this storm tonight and tomorrow, but not as bad as we're getting it.

As always, check with your airline.

Damnit.

The White Death has descended upon us.

The planning lecture series better still be on for tomorrow at UC.

Wow. Its absolutely beautiful outside. It also took me 110 minutes to drive from Cleveland Clinic to Ohio City. Still, its really beautiful.

As a courtesy to its stockholders, the company for which I work did not heed the severe weather alert and was open for business as usual this morning, though they did officially shut down at 4PM and send the employees on their merry, snowy, sleety, freezing rainy way.

Fu©k 'em. I worked from home.

we have a light dusting of snow here in NYC.  Its one storm...we need the precipitation.  Lets hope its all gone by the weekend.  I have some serious shopping to do!

I'm up north for the funeral of my beloved grandfather, who died early Sunday morning, aged 86, after suffering a massive stroke on Friday afternoon...he was the greatest man on the planet, and I'll miss him for a long, long time...the visiting hours were supposed to be tonight, in Norwalk, and the funeral was scheduled for tomorrow, but because of the snow, everything's been postponed a day.  I'm snowed in with my parents in Hinckley, and we'll see tomorrow if things get put off another day.

Rest in peace, Kenneth George Hahn, Sr.:

My condolences, Ethan.

Think Summer!  :-D

Looks like 10-12 inches of accumulation at my house, with some bigger drifts around the garage. I just came in for a warm-up and coffee after 2 1/2 hours of shoveling walks, and I think I'm a little less than halfway through.

Most businesses and all the schools are closed, and the rural areas are under a level-2 snow emergency; you can get ticketed for driving except for emergencies, although it's not likely to happen unless you get in a wreck or get stuck and block the road. In town the arterials seem to be pretty fair but the side streets are still mostly impassable. Even on the arterials the intersections sometimes are bad because of hard-packed berms of salt/snow mix shoved up by plows.

Right now we have crystal blue skies and piercingly bright sun with a light breeze. The forecast calls for another light dusting of snow, with winds to 30mph later today. After I get the walks dug out, I'll try to get out and take some photos.

Well, I understand that Huron County is under driving restrictions of some sort, so we've postponed the funeral stuff until Friday evening visiting hours and the funeral on Saturday.  In the meantime, we're just bunkered down in Hinckley, shoveling complete, with a fire and leftovers from yesterday's meal - meatloaf, spinach-bacon mashed potatoes, a salad and fresh baked sourdough bread (I brought my starter dough with me on Monday!)...plus a fantastic stew Dad made over the weekend...a sad time, but a good time just spending time with my folks...

Riverviewer, I offer my condolences on the loss of your grandfather. It sounds like he had a good, robust and active life, and left some wonderful memories for his family.

Main streets and highways are snow-covered, but easily driveable here in Columbus, but the neighborhood streets are a mess.  Very easy to get high-centered if you're driving a front-wheel drive car. I even saw a semi (minus it's tariler) get stuck near my house this morning. Three distinct layers of stuff that can make you slip and slide.... snow, freezing rain and a sleet/snow combination on top of that.

Sorry about your loss River...

Everyone is here if you need us.

Back to topic.

A few of my friends are calling the winter storm an ironic justice since its happening on St. Valentines. Personally, I don't think of it that way since I've had to shovel... twice, scrape my car... twice, and free my car from ice and snow...half a dozen times.....  This has been quite annoying, but at least some scenes made for great pictures and panoramics.

I agree, lets think summer! ;p

I'm thinking we need a spring/summer pics thread to help us through this!!

Go go imaginary heatwave!

Isn't this where people from SW Ohio mention how much better it is down here? ;)

We have about 4 inches on the ground right now from the storms over the last two weeks.

Still, the snow + ice is not fun at all in several situations. >.<

I can't get into my driveway because its too steep and icy.  My landlord hasn't plowed it in days, and he has left us with no snow shovels.  I've been parking in a ramp for two days now despite the $1/hour price.  I'm waiting for Sunday to come so I can leave without paying.  I hate this snow.

ugh

Just tried shoveling the crap

it's like a rock

I like the crackling sound the trees make in the breeze, tho.

I love this stuff. I just get to enjoy looking at it. I live in a mid-rise condo building with an underground heated parking garage. So I don't have to shovel or clean off my car. Instead, I went for a walk last night down the middle of seven-lane Clifton Boulevard. At least I think it was the middle because no pavement was visible. There was very little traffic, and the wind was howling. At 5 a.m. this morning, I was awakened by my metal balcony vibrating loudly in the wind. Weather Channel's guy here in Cleveland was reporting gusts in the mid-40s in the pre-dawn hours. I peeked out the window and it just looked like a thick, fast-moving fog. Pretty awesome. I love it when Mother Nature put humans in their place.

deduct the total amount from your rent and buy the shovels, salt etc. and deduct from your rent.
