I got an 80 downtown Cincy.  Strange when the nearest coffee shop shown was 4+ miles away and there is one on the first floor of my building . . . plus one a block away, one two blocks away and one like three blocks away.

I live across the street from BallHatGuy, and I got an 87!  It did mention the coffee shop in his building, but it did miss a few such as Kitty's.  The listing does seem slightly out of date.  For bookstores, they missed Brentano's in Tower Place and the Ohio Bookstore on Main.

Aside from the technical limitations this tool does have (it can only be as accurate as the data it pulls from, which is from Google.  Don't blame these guys for bad Google data.  Really there should be a WikiLocator-type app where users can freely edit the location and type of businesses on a mapping tool.  A much more comprehensive and up-to-date listing could be maintained this way and as long as the community editing the tool was diligent it could be reasonably accurate and more helpful than out-of-date Google data which seems to count on business owners to keep track.

With good data, the next step to improving this walkability tool would be to allow a user to rank and weight each different category.  Don't drink coffee?  Weight it a 1 and have the score not care so much if the nearest coffee shop is more than a mile away.  Movie buff?  Rank the app appropriately so movie theaters and/or rental stores are close.

I can actually walk to quite a lot of places considering i'm in a new subdivision surrounded by rural land. I can walk to kroger, walgreens, an asian buffet, a chase bank, a dominos, great clips, and well, thats about it.

^BAH - A true alchy only needs a liquor store and a bridge to sit under.

but do you actually walk to these places?

Yeah, and often I'm forced to since I don't own a car which has put me in an awkward position up here.

A lot of people I talk to who live in the suburbs may claim that they can walk to x y or z, but when you ask if they ever have they either have done it once or never have actually walked there.

Definitely. And thats one of the reason why people in suburbs are on average, ten pounds heavier and have twice as many obese children (those stats are from Rutgers studies). I think one of the reasons why people don't walk there is because the neighborhood isn't "inviting" you to, by offering sidewalks. Plus, with buildings spaced so far apart, I think it gives the illusion that those places are even farther. Ludlow has great architecture, pedestrians, people hanging out outside, people walking/jogging with their dogs, even occasional musicians. with a wide variety of stores all crammed together. For a street like that, walking is an "experience". Here it's just dull.

^I certainly would want an "importance" rater. For an alcoholic, having 24 bars within 1/2 mile is a plus.

Ditto for being able to know the location of the nearest "hook up."

LOCKED

My current locale in Copley Towship: 25 out of 100

My soon to be new locale in Cleveland Heights: 45 out of 100

A slight improvement.

Cleveland Heights is light years more walkable than Copley, imho.

^ I agree.  I was surprised the Copley got that high of a score.  The only places I can easily walk to currently are the Circle K and Rizzi's Pizza located up the street.  Anywhere else requires a car or some very good walking shoes... blah :-P

the cleveland trunk co. is a bookstore? au bon pain is still open in the BP building? (okay I know we've pointed out errors ad nauseum

and seriously this movie theater thing is really bothering me.........(the fact that its a factor, and how amazingly inaccurate it is)

it is kind of strange to use a measure to distance to declare something more walkable, you basically just said one neighborhood was 5.89 trillion miles more walkable than another.

My apartment in Plum Borough- 36

What was good- proximity to schools, walking distance to grocery (it's uphill, tho) and some restaurants in the area.

What was bad- no good movie theater (a mid-east pittsburgh problem) and lack of coffee shops, bookstores.

My parents house in West Akron- 62?!

Oh wait...this says that there's a revco drug store on exchange! And a General Cinemas on Market at Highland Square! And Circle K is a grocery store! Please.

It's better when the grocery store is uphill from your place than when it's downhill, though!  Easier to tackle the hill without bags of groceries...

Okay: Walk Score sucks, but I'd divide the blame 80/20 Google/Walk Score.

Great concept, though. I look forward to refinements.

Agreed, their statistics is only as good as google's API......

but still, movie theaters????

My house in Detroit-Shoreway (Franklin, west of 58th) scored a 73.  There are several omissions on the list, but several that shouldn't be on the list anymore as well.  The largest oversight was the movie theater (Tower City is about 2 miles, which is closer than Ridge Park Square!) and yeah, where's the transit?

My last apartment in Ohio City also scored a 73 (oddly enough, neither Dave's, nor the West Side Market showed up on the list).

My parents' house in Shaker Heights, where I lived from age 12-17, scored a 31.

The brownstone I lived in for 3 years in Brooklyn, NY scored a 91.

My last apartment in Portland, OR scored a 95.

My last apartment in Cincinnati (on Ludlow) scored a 78.

I'm more puzzled by the weight placed on proximity to shoe shine boys.

My in-laws in Nashville don't even have sidewalks in their neighborhood. How did they even manage a 20?

you raise the most poignant questions, Mr. 3231

My parents' house in Shaker Heights, where I lived from age 12-17, scored a 31.

My parents house scored a 13.  Which I would consider accurate cause aint nothin' around it!!

Here's what came up for me when I just type in the city name and state:

1. Dayton - 87

2. Cleveland - 84

3. Columbus - 75

4. Cincinnati - 73

5. Toledo - 64

As much as I would love to think that Dayton scores 87 I know there's no way. This thing is jacked up.

My in-laws in Nashville don't even have sidewalks in their neighborhood. How did they even manage a 20?

Do they live behind a movie theater?

Good point. There are two movie theaters within 3 miles of their house. I'm surprised they didn't get a 85!

One question, do you get more points if the theater has more screens? ;)

One question, do you get more points if the theater has more screens? ;)

Apparently not.  Shaker Square cinema (6 screens) is within spitting distance of my crib, and I scored low.

80 for Downtown Cleveland, but it missed a lot of stuff, including everything located in Tower City, Constantino's, and about half of Downtown's restaurants and all of it's bookstores.  Each department of the Library showed up as a seperate library, although it probably deserves the bonus points anyway, since each department is the size of a branch library.  Travel shops showed up as bookstores.  Sherwin Williams' offices showed up as a hardware store, several times.  The City's Dept of parks showed up as a park, several times, as did Riverbend Park, Corp, though only once.  The Jake showed up three times. No actual parks showed up, though there are several within that radius.  Northeast Ohio Telephone is apparently a good place for groceries.

Asiatown landed a 65. As has been noted, a valiant attempt, but the methodology leaves something to be desired. No doubt, my old apartment right on the corner of Shaker Square was a little more walkable than my current pad ... but scored a 56.

my old shaker pad has an Attorney show up as food.

This thing's messed up.

For my old place it shows a printer as a "bookstore" and a steel service center as a "hardware store".  On Broadway in Bedford it defaults to Rockside and Broadway even if you enter a downtown address.

Also, schools don't count if your kids don't go to the closest one.

Other places I've lived:

Avon Lake- 16, but probably too good a score for the area I lived in- there aren't even sidewalks

Near CSU- 64, about right, as there isn't much on that side of town

U District, Seattle- 84, but probably deserved better, I never missed having a car while there

I think the website has a good idea, but they need a lot more types of data, and current and accurate data at that, to make it really worthwhile.

I just tried this for the first time....

My current house scored a big fat ZERO.  That's right, a zero.

I would have to say that overall, my neighborhood is very walkable.  I can walk the golf course behind me, I can walk the corn fields next door and across the street. I can walk the horse pastures across the street. I can walk the creek next to my house.  I can walk the side of my road for miles and miles.

Anyone get a lower score?

(my prev house scored a 53)

^that seems about right.  one of my relatives got a four, but a zero is really quite impressive.  If I were you, I would buy a horse or I would move.

My current place in Grandview is 58

My last place on Summit St (Columbus) is 78

I take it you live in a subdivision pretty far from the city... Can I ask you something since you're a father in the exurbs?

Yes, I'm in the middle of nowhere, between Lebanon, Middletown, and Monroe.

^ my sister got a 0 for her old house in rural Coventry, RI.

Her house in Oakley (Cinti) was in the high 60s.

My apt in SF is an 87.  My parents old house in Columbus was a 13.  Guess things are a trifle more handy here.  I only take my car out of the garage once a month or so (Costco runs).

Yet, people in this region still tend to believe that there is "nothing to do in Downtown Dayton".  Their loss...

Preach!!!

My score in Over-the-Rhine: 98

My score in Over-the-Rhine: 78

My house in Lakewood got a 68

My parents' place in Ashtabula County where I grew up got a 3; I still think that's high. We have a 1000' long driveway off a dirt road connected to a state highway. I guess the walk down the driveway to get the mail was at least 2.5 points.

My fiance's house in Toledo got a 63.

John Carroll U. got a 45

My old apt. in Tremont got a 77

My old apt. in the Cedar-Lee hood got an 82!

My fiance's parents place in mcmansion-land out in N. Wonderbreadville got a 2. A 2!

My score in Over-the-Rhine: 98

Which part of OTR? Vine? Main? It seems like Main is the most walkable. I guess Vine has a big advantage with its neighborhood kroger but if you do heavy grocery shopping its not really practical to walk.

you have to remember that the program throws a 1 sq mi circle

It's funny that almost everyone's parent's house scores terribly.

Washington Park area.  They listed a restaurant and a grocery both within a block, but the grocery is really corner store that sells fortified wine and the restaurant is a really really run down bar that does serve sandwiches.

mmmm.... wild irish rose, in both neon yellow and neon pink.

I would guess that enzo's didn't get picked up

^You seem to know your bum wine's exceptionally well :D
