Lots of great buildings, and lots of ugly infill too.

Huh, the other Delaware County.

such a shame the courthouse is gone.. But the city is still beautiful.

What's the deal with Muncie? ... A black friend of mine that is pretty keen on Black American history talks heavily on Muncie's KKK history ...

It ain't all history; racism is still an issue in Muncie. A friend who used to work on canvassing teams for Citizens' Action Coalition told about going to Muncie with a team that included a couple of black canvassers and having people call the police on them. An infamous lynching took place on the courthouse square in Marion, just one county away, in 1930.

That whole area is still pretty strongly bible-belt, where "Love your neighbor" carries the stipulation, "if he's WASP and hetero."

I'm probably being harsh on the region; there are a lot of good people there, but the intolerant rednecks are the most vocal and they tend to influence outsiders' perception.

Reminds me of Howell, MI.  I've read a lot about the Klan history there.

Another view of Muncie:

Sadly, I don't think it is just a Muncie thing.  The Klan has a pretty strong history in Indiana and the Indiana State Library has quite a collection of material on the subject.  http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/isl/indiana/Klan.html

Indiana was a strong hold for the kkk in the first half of the 20th century. Though its basically fallen apart now, there is still alot of racism in the older more rural generation.

Though this is not unique to Indiana.

Say .... this is MY town! - next time folks stop by, let's do a pub crawl / architectural tour.
