More National Merit Scholars choose UC

CINCINNATI BUSINESS COURIER

February 15, 2007

CINCINNATI - For the first time, the University of Cincinnati has made a list of colleges that attract large numbers of National Merit Scholars. UC is among 97 schools with more than 20 Merit Scholars listed by the Chronicle of Higher Education, ranking 64th, according to a news release.

Breakdown of where nearby universities stand:

20.  Ohio State University

64.  University of Cincinnati

66.  University of Kentucky

73.  Miami University

This is GREAT news!!!  For all the flack that Nancy Zimpfer has gotten, I personally feel that she has increased the value of my eventual degree from UC during her tenure.  Athletics aside...she has made the university a better academic university...which is what its all about isn't it?

Well Done...and Congrats!

Who cares about UC?

GO BUCKS!!!  WAHOO!!!  #20 BABY! (but #1 in my heart :D)

Shouldn't they divide the # of merit-scholars by the total enrollment?  This list seems to favor big schools over small ones.

I know that UC and OSU are huge. How large is UK and Miami?

I was think

I was thinking the same thing.  Is OSU the biggest unversity in the country?

There are a number of schools that seem to be in the running for it every year, and I think it changes pretty often.  For now, OSU is the largest in the nation.

From Wikipedia.org:

Total enrollment (system-wide):

OSU - 59,091

UC - 34,364

UK - 27,208

MU - 20,505

Last count had OSU back in the lead with 58K, just over Arizona, Minnesota, and Texas.

All 4 schools have been led the nation in enrollment at one time or another over the last decade.

(and was discussed in a previous thread somewhere on this forum [either Urbanbar or city topics])

what are you talking about? that is the reality now.

My undergrad is in African History, but there aren't a whole lot of jobs in that field.

Sorry, I forget that not everyone is an engineering student.

fucking national merit nerds. I wouldn't want those soulless bastards at MY SCHOOL.

That is kind of a dumb rationale to have.  You would not want the 'best of the best' to be attending your school.  I agree high school doesn't mean crap anymore, but it is the only guide we have for admitance standards into our universities (along with SAT/ACT).  Whether you like it or not, thats the way its done.

For the other comments that have been brought up.  Now UC is still not at the level of MU or even OSU...but this story (and my point) is that many people don't give UC the credit it deserves.  It is much better academically than what people think; and it has been rising in the national/international rankings for many years now.

This is a good thing for ALL Ohio...this thread wasn't meant to create animosity among the rest of the people in Ohio and their alma matta.  But to each their own...you can argue that UC is not MU or OSU, but you cannot deny the fact that UC is improving..and can swim with the big fish.

Similar to many cities, UC has a negative image: lots of crime, poor academics, sports centered, etc. MU has an oppposite exaggeration of being at Ivy leaque level and perfectly safe. If you are MU, you arn't too worried, but UC will have to do something to change the perceptions, more than just making them "less true."

^you should leave his post up for pure entertainment.  Its the craziest thing I've read in a while.

Good for UC - maybe this will help to bring the general student body up to the level of the more specific and professional colleges (e.g. DAAP, CCM, College of Medicine).  I would not agree that UC has as bad of a reputation as others think (even though I went to OSU), but each step helps.  Here is some additional information:
