did we ever confirm what is going in there? I tried googling but to no avail. I walked by the other day and the inside was still all metal studs everywhere. seemed to be waiting for wiring and stuff since I didn't see that at all.

I didn't understand why the glass portion (the best part of the design imo) will have to be a part of the second phase. Did I miss something?

Huh. Cleveland.com seems to be implying that Bibb had the economic development director fired because she did a little too much prying into someone that Bibb may have been connected to. I took some journalism classes in college and its clear how careful cleveland.com is treading from the relationship of Bibb and Hartnett (only saying Bibb was a "patron" of Harness Cycle), saying,  "Today, the Vitrolite building is opening a window into how Cleveland’s Economic Development Department operates – or fails to – in the era of Mayor Justin Bibb." and "In the wake of internal audit’s memo, Jackson sent a June 12 letter that, among other things, demanded full repayment of the city loan. Mayor Justin Bibb fired Jackson three days later, without explanation."

 

Do you think cleveland.com is correct in what they're implying? And also, why isn't the county cooperating? They may have paid for the same invalid invoices that the city paid for. It sounds like Hartnett was really trying to pull one over on the city many times and sounds like only Jackson--who was fired--was the only one who had a sense that something fishy was going on. But her firing buts anyone else on warning not to dig deeper.

My problem with this article is it's a lot of speculation. Even the auditor's memo doesn't seem to reach conclusions.  Having some knowledge of Cleveland disburses loans, I can kind of understand what likely is happening and I don't think it's as nefarious as is implied here. 

I was under the impression that Jackson was fired due to numerous complaints from the development community, and they reached a point where the administration felt she was perhaps being needlessly combative and that her attitude could possibly impede future development in the city,  i don't think the firing was due to just one episode.  

 

Agree lots of speculation in the article, but I did like the detailed and in depth reporting which is  rare for cleveland.com

It's my understanding that she was combative toward developers and businesses owners. She was also non responsive to their inquiries.  I've heard some of this albeit 2nd hand. I know of one developer who avoided reaching out to Cleveland for any financial assistance.  

I think they need to do a full investigation into Hartnett and what payments she received for this project.  

Some very prominent developers demanded she be fired, doubt it had to do with this 

With both county and city involvement, and now this article, there are a lot of adults and eyes now looking at this, a comparatively small $500k loan. 

 

I appreciate a lot of the threads that the article tried to pull, but it seemed just short of a “there” there. Certainly not something systemic. Let’s see how the next few months go as Hartnett is required to provide the required documentation to maintain the loan.

Brandt's comment didn't make sense to me. Anne stated that she didn't submit those invoices for reimbursement not that she didn't submit them at all. I think the journalist hasn't connected the dots. Either those dots don't exist or she didn't find them.

Thanks for this clarification. Hartnett herself said as much in the preceding paragraphs but I wasn't sure what to make of it given Brandt said she "presumes" they submitted them for disbursement. This is complicated stuff, but I would have presumed an internal auditor would clarify something like this rather than making allegations based on presumptions.

I thought the same thing. How are you, an auditor, just going to make that presumption? That’s kind of a ridiculous thing to say

Neighbors are strongly against and organized.  Should be an interesting bellwether to see if scale & reduced parking will be permitted over neighbors protests.

Good or bad: this is what happens when a portion of a community are allowed to dictate a design process. Director Huang has done a great job with expediting City Planning but needs to focus her attention on BZA, Landmarks and local design review boards next. There are TOO many people okay with being non-starters in productive conversation because they don't like a certain developer. MyPlace has come to the table with 3 variations, this is the 4th. The people against it would seemingly only okay a single family/townhouse development at this location. (the usual complaints: parking, height, pricing) This massing is directly based on those folks feedback, especially the alleyways.

I have written in support and had others write in support but there are a few key NIMBY's who push back on this/rile up the surrounding neighbors with fear mongering about parking and height. Event though there's equal sized buildings down the street and even equal sized townhomes on side streets throughout the neighborhood. Don't get me started on parking...

The neighbors are idiots. (Can I say that here? 😄). I love this project. This project would so SO GOOD for that corner and part of Ohio City. I hope such people aren't successful in preventing growth and development for their selfish purposes.

It looks like that from that top view, but when I see the renderings at street view, IMO it works.

Great this is finally happening.  What I find sad however, is the emphasis they have to place on height of the buildings right up front when "marketing" the new development to the neighborhood.  I don't blame the developers.  They know they have to deal with this issue right up front.  I would rather see them emphasizing the quality of the built materials and the uniqueness of the design among other things but such is the world we live in in Ohio City and elsewhere.  The buildings are clearly height appropriate for the site but yet....  I just hope that once those W.25 parking lots by Lutheran are finally developed we see some towers and there is no pushback.

Is the issue that they don't have frontage on Lorain Ave. commensurate with the area in back?

This is great very excited to have this come in. Just wish that court yard was accessible for the neighborhood but looks like they’ll have a pool so I guess I understand.

The buildings definitely seem match a similar style to The Dexter. lack of rooftop amenities is always surprising

45 West site is just odd. Almost surprised they would take this on without at least the auto site parcel on the corner. I assume the owner of the auto site didn't want to sell, which is disappointing given it's a shabby auto lot. I can at least understand the gas station not wanting to move, even if I don't like it. That said, I think the proposal is pretty good given the awkward site and all of the neighborhood complaints.

 

Vibrator Co. site proposal looks great.

One of Ohio City’s largest development sites is located in this Cleveland neighborhood’s booming Hingetown section. So it was only a matter of time before a large development was proposed for that site at 2828 Clinton Ave., measuring nearly 2 acres. That time is coming next week when the Franklin-Clinton Block Club which includes Hingetown will get a presentation of preliminary plans for the development and offer input on it to the city’s design-review and landmark commissions.

Looks great. Now let's hope the anti-density folks in the neighborhood don't derail it or water it down to a 4 unit 2 story nothing.

Looks like a great project.  Like the design so far and fits in well.  The unanswered question in my mind at this point given the current lending environment.  Do they have the $$$ or are we going to get all giddy as they go through the approval process and then moan and groan for months/years thereafter when not one shovel of dirt is turned,

I like the five-story building better; it has a "Cleveland" look.  The six-story building is a ho-hummer.

ho-hummer?  six stories is better than five (and seven is better than six). The more units the better! And with that design, from the street, it LOOKS like five-stories as the sixth floor looks like it is set back from the street wall---probably to give a patios to the units on the sixth floor. I like the design.

Ho-hummer = bland architecture common with many other similar-sized buildings.  Nothing wrong with it; but nothing exceptional either, at least IMO.
