While I'm glad that they are included some sort of sidewalk cafe, the design looks very bland so far. The rounded turret looks way too big.

where else will the people have that great room with a grand piano that they never use?

cool, a nice patio to watch all the men walk into the bathhouse.

The rounded front (immense) makes it look a little like a hospital.

Although there are some design details that should be worked out, I like it.

Between the Bop Stop, Bath House and the One Charter project (assuming it is still a go), this building will fit in nicely.

You're thinking of the other Detroit Ave project--One Charter Place.

oh, thats right my bad.

"It will still be a gay-friendly building," Gillespie said.

ok, I see where you got yourself confused. ;)

Yeah the original rendering looked less sterile, although slightly cartoonish...  (and it was 5 stories not 4)

The circular part on the new one does seem awfully oversized.

I guess it's basically a "mini" Avenue District.

ha, I do see the similarities

Arlington, VA (Ballston), here we come!

Ha! I just posted the same thing over on the other thread for this project.

Great Lakes brews funding for upgrades

Great Lakes Brewing Co. has won approval from Cuyahoga County commissioners for an industrial revenue bond refinancing that will net the company $4.5 million in new investment to upgrade its brewing operations.

Co-owner Dan Conway said the expansion will allow the company to double its brewing capacity from 50,000 barrels annually to 100,000 barrels.

It will expand its marketing territory as a result, setting its sights, in particular, on New York City.

Oh man, that last sentence has me excited.

It will be exciting to see Great Lakes succeed in a national marketplace and possibly become a large employer in Northeast Ohio.

I've got a few friends in NYC who will be excited to hear about that!

My wife will be excited that there is twice as much top go around as before.

YAY BEER!!

now we will never get the ex-pats that moved to NYC to come back... I jest, I jest.

Good news!  Trader Joe's and Whole Foods back in Chicago usualy have 3-5 different flavors for sale.  Is this the case in every location or just the stores around the Great Lakes?

Anyways,  I just moved into my new apt. at Fulton Pl. and Lorain!  The cute blue house with pink trim.  I love it and I'm soooooo glad to be in the city!  I haven't even been home from IIT for one month and I had to leave Brunstucky!  Has there ever been word about possibly developing the corner with the gas station/thrift store and the Hollywood video corner?  It'd be nice to see a couple 5-6 story res. bldgs. with street retail there.

^I either never see, or barely see (can't remember exactly) GLB in Michigan. Then again, that market is dominated by Bell's (and for good reason) (no, not starting a pissing match, just saying that bell's is my fav).

Whole Foods in Birmingham and the little markets in Royal Oak (cool old Detroit suburb) sold GLB back in 2000.

cle2032, welcome to the neighborhood!

A number of places in Ann Arbor carried Great Lakes: the grocery store, the beer depot, and at least two bars that I can think of.  Although Bell's was much more prevalent.  Oberon was all over the place during the summer months.

As a non drinker (well a special occasion drinker) what is an IPA?

India Pale Ale.  It was a type of Pale Ale made by English brewers for export to colonial India.  It is very heavily hopped to help preserve the flavor on the long trip.  They make for a good summer brew, though I think they are too "bite-y" because of the acidity of the hopps to be "refreshing".

welcome, cle!

as for your question about that corner, I've not heard anything about its redevelopment.  Hollywood is only a few years old and that gas station would be a difficult development site, due to environmental concerns.  It would be a great intersection for something significant, no doubt, but it's not likely on the near-term radar.

thanks man...although I do not understand the last sentence!  lol

Welcome Cle- that is a really nice renovation. I been in one of the upper floor units and it was quite nice! If you like import beers you have some nice choices near you. the Import Haus, a little German import store  on 28th and Lorain sells great euro imports in the bottle. then of course there is great lakes and the near by rock bottom and chop house which are micro breweries. I get growlers  from Rock Bottom of fresh beer at least 2 imes a week, it is hard to beat the fresh stuff. Great lakes has growlers too.  once you throw your net out there are even more.  you are near my little Greasy spoon Nicks for breakfast (about the 4100 block or Lorain) and Steve's Lunch on about 50th. The hot Dog inn is even closer to you on Lorain. Although I hope you are not a health nut... not so light stuff.

you're also a short walk from the new le petit triangle (formerly oui oui), Johnny Mango, Fit (fitness), Studio (hair), and that sushi place I never remember the name of.

kimo's sushi, great for takeout, ok for dine in.  also, momocho is in that block too, upscale mexican food.  very tasty.

MTS - IPAs are known for having a crisp (sometimes bitter and/or tart) taste* because of the hops. Although the hops were originally used as a preservative for shipping (as X said), the hops gave the beers a distinct flavor. Along the way, some of the sailors dabbled in their cargo, thus the taste for hoppy beers developed. Most of the beers that were brewed with more hops were ales, and being shipped to British colonies (i.e. India) - thus the name, India Pale Ale. As with any beer, there are distinctions between British style IPAs, American style IPAs, etc.

*It's not unlike the crispness of some Pinot Grigios or even certain vodkas. Or for non-drinkers - it's along the lines of a very tart (almost sour) lemonade without the lemon obviously.

thanks!

Now I feel like I should hire a beer wench!

you gotta be kidding me? i've only been emailing them annually for how many years now? all they ever did was promise. lol. yay!

i'm gonna email them again, i want a say in the rollout, i know my local nyc craft beer bars - too well. i wanna get'em in for an event at the blind tiger for sure:

I am an expereinced craft beer drinker (believe me)and I frankly think many U.S. IPA's suck b/c they are over hopped for the drama-this the rage currently in the US. you can have IPA's in Great Briton where is all began (as mentioned by X to make the pasage to India) as well as  bitters and they are not over done as they are here esp the Pacific Northwest. I do not recommend them to people trying to dip their toe in the beer pool. Ales (other than pale, too boring and bud-esque) and possibly wheats for summer are a good start.

duff beef!!!

since we are talking about beer. I want to give a shout out (again) for Fulton Foods which is trying to balance the wide demographic from malt liquor/wild irish rose to Belgian ales. Since visiting after they first opened they have made their import and micro selection much larger. I am guessing up to 20 different types.  How nice is it that a humble convienient  mart in the neighborhood is so well stocked? Now if I were to do a business plan: since I do not think it is needed, get rid of the bullet proof pastic wall in front of the cashier. remove the milk crates out front which encourage loitering.  Maybe spruce up the facade a  touch. UNless someone tells you what they have it is unlikley the average person in search of good beer would go in.  Since they have expanded their collection I am hoping they are doing well.  They are across the street from Momocho.

  • 3 weeks later...

Anyone see this building being moved across from St. Ignatius?

They're moving it for St. Ignatius's new performing art center.

^ holy cow that is a funny pic.

i am so glad they are saving it -- those style of buildings are very cool, historic and functional to have around.

Anyone see this building being moved across from St. Ignatius?

as someone who just bought a building for the first time, I can safely say that that scene almost made me throw-up when I drove past.

^why?

I am somewhat amazed they agreed to move the building. For years the artist that operated in that building were so against any expansion st. ig's proposed.

a very belated-Thanks to the neighborhood fellow UOers!  J. Mango's and Oui Oui-or w/e it's called now are great.  I need to try the sushi and Momocho.  I've actually been to the Studio a couple times already, lol.  My hair grows fast!  By the way, I don't know if it was mentioned in an earlier post but my former employer and favorite watering hole, Bier Markt, will increase its size by approx. 3x w/in the next few months.  Restaurant next store in the space the gallery used to occupy and another bar-but more loungey and I think live music space downstairs!  All spaces have been drywalled, etc. so be on the lookout in the next few months!  It will be a great addition to W 25th!

Oh, and I must try Import Haus!!!  I'm looking forward to the foreign beverages!

^ Momocho is definitely one of my favorites by far.

Great atmosphere - I was there last night and it was packed.  On a tuesday.  Had to wait for a table, which I thought was awesome (my date wasn't as thrilled as I was).  Oh and the food rocks too :)

After Zen Salon moves from 28th and Lorain to the "Today's Fashion's' location, I heard that it will be replaced by a yoga studio.

The Current Zen Building sold already?

Wow, that was fast.

J. Mango's and Oui Oui-or w/e it's called now are great.

I have yet to try Oui Oui.  For some reason, every time I am on that corner (which is quite often) and I am hungry/thirsty I get pulled into Johnny Mango like the place has large U-magnets or something.
