July 18, 200717 yr While the design is pretty boring, it will be an improvement for that portion of Lorain. Good to see that St. Ignatius continues to improve as an academic institution.
July 18, 200717 yr Author i agree...boring, but an improvement. I'd still like to see where that old building is going, though. Anyone have an idea?
July 18, 200717 yr They are moving it out to Crocker Park. ;) I think that it will be directly adjacent to the West Side Catholic Center. I believe that I saw workers preparing a new foundation for the building.
July 18, 200717 yr I think that it will be directly adjacent to the West Side Catholic Center. I believe that I saw workers preparing a new foundation for the building. Correct, and I believe it is halfway en route for its ~300 foot trip down Lorain.
July 18, 200717 yr Just wondering .. any good coffee shops in Ohio City? What about Starbucks? yeah, its right next to the BW3s
July 18, 200717 yr Just wondering .. any good coffee shops in Ohio City? What about Starbucks? Talkies...across from Great Lakes Brewing.
July 18, 200717 yr too bad the footprint for this new center couldn't hop the street and land on top of the wendy's.
July 18, 200717 yr Just wondering .. any good coffee shops in Ohio City? What about Starbucks? yeah, its right next to the BW3s I m such an airhead-sat there wondering what the heck you were talking about. again with the dryness folks. I am a little literal lately
July 19, 200717 yr Oui Oui changed names/owners? Is it still the same? What is the menu? it is reopening as Global Dish or something like that next week (may be the 24th?) I think it will be great-the menu is posted and they are usually there every day meeting/working and getting ready. I think the new owner or chef may be from the old Fulton kitchen...
July 19, 200717 yr Just wondering .. any good coffee shops in Ohio City? What about Starbucks? Talkies...across from Great Lakes Brewing. or when the market is open try the vendor City Roast Coffee located right inside the front Lorain/W.25th entrance. By the way, there is a relatively new crepe vendor next to City Roast.
July 19, 200717 yr CLE: To answer one of your earlier questions about the corner of Fulton and Lorain with the gas station and Unique Thrift, one of Cleveland's larger developers was trying to piece together that block a little over a year ago, including the two story house and blue cottage that are directly south of the gas station on Fulton. Unfortunately, the owners of the building that Unique is in had just signed an apparently very lucrative renewal with Unique, which scuttled the whole deal. But don't feel too down....what the developer hoped to put on the corner? A CVS. The Hollywood Video store has actually been an asset IMHO. Before that was built, that corner was consumed by one of those used car lots that are unfortunately still too prevalent along that stretch of Lorain. I think we'll see in a few more years that investment in Ohio City will have reached a point that areas south of Lorain such as that will be utilized for purposes perhaps a bit more inspiring than another drug store!!! But welcome to the neighborhood!!!
July 19, 200717 yr Too bad CVS couldn't go after one of the other many remaining used car lots on Lorain (and built on the sidewalk, please!!). "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 19, 200717 yr Htsguy, the reason is that foundation work can be a super expensive project. As for St.Iggy's plan, I like what they're doing, but in some ways they act almost like a freeway bridge between the development going on at the corner of west 25th and the rest of Lorain. I look at Lorain ave as a separate project for development all together starting from Fulton and going to the Urban School. That stretch has some cool old buildings that are certainly branded with the antiques/craft thing, there's room to grow out of Ohio City.. I think that the big ticket developers ignore it's potential.

I think that the big ticket developers ignore it's potential. I think that Ignatius' presence has really helped the growth that has occurred to its north and east. It is a very insulating presence. At the same time, its sheer size coupled with a fire station, Wendy's and the West Side Catholic Center keeps the W.25 momentum from continuing west.
July 19, 200717 yr I do see the humor but partner and I frequent Unique. Lot's of treasures if you know what to look for!

No, I believe Global Dish is going into the OPA space. Righto. Global Dish will open in the old OPA site (they have a menu posted already), and Le Oui Oui is now Le Petit Triangle Cafe. I haven't been there since the change in ownership, so I can't speak to the menu or the yumminess.
July 24, 200717 yr Question! What is Import Haus? Someone just recently posted that it's a place to buy imported alcoholic beverages but anytime I walk, run, or drive by it, it's closed. AND it has Travel Service painted on the walls too. Is it closed for good but used to be a store? I was so excited when someone said it sold european beer and such but when I went by there, it looked abandoned... :-(
July 24, 200717 yr I haven't been there in awhile (maybe a year), but I'm fairly positive that it's still open. And it does sell import beer, wine, and other products.
July 24, 200717 yr Import Haus always looks like it is closed, but I believe it is open until 5:30 or 6 M - F they have a nice selection of european beers, wines, meats, cheeses, etc however, they could certainly stand to try some new marketing ideas!!
July 24, 200717 yr I hate how there are quite a few places in OC that close at 6ish! People don't leave work until then! Stay open an extra hour and make a few extra bucks! The dry cleaning place near Oui Oui is open 8-6. Who isn't at work between those hours?! Geez! People can't run every errand on Saturday.
July 24, 200717 yr ^Couldn't agree more. If Lelolia stayed open for 30 more minute they'd make another $1,000 a week I bet.

The dry cleaning place near Oui Oui is open 8-6. Who isn't at work between those hours?! Geez! People can't run every errand on Saturday. Is that a mom/pop business? Maybe talking to them and suggesting longer hours or adjusted hours (example open late on Monday's and Thursdays) will help. I would also encourage other friends/neighbors to request this as well.
July 24, 200717 yr import haus is only open until about 6! it is still in business and a great store. Lots of Western European items (ie cheese, chocolate, beer, mustards what have you) -mostly German. With the exact same issue is Athens Market on the corner of Lorain and 26th-it is more Mediterranean in focus. Sadly you may need to hit them on the weekend if you do not work in the area. I happen to work right near them so I can run over after work or at lunch time. I just may ask Athens why they are not open later...I am not sure they have adjusted to gentrification...or perhaps things get desolate and less safe the later it gets.
July 24, 200717 yr I am not sure they have adjusted to gentrification...or perhaps things get desolate and less safe the later it gets. I don't see how that is a factor, as being open - along with encouraging their neighbors to stay open puts people on the street, making the area busy and more attractive to neighborhood consumers.
July 25, 200717 yr I checked out Dish on W25th last night for a quick sandwich for dinner and was impressed. It has about a dozen sandwiches, a dozen salads, and sides, and also a vegetarian menu and plenty of seating to dine in. They also include homemade barbeque chips with the meal which is damn good. Check it out. They're open until 7:00 during the week. I walked over there after Lelolia closed at 5:00 instead of at 6:00 when it usually does...
July 25, 200717 yr Author i went past this morning and was impressed with their signage! I'll have to check out the food one of these days as well... too bad they opened a veggie place a month after I left the neighborhood!
July 25, 200717 yr Did you say mustard?! Real Dijon mustard?!?!?! I don't mind paying $8 for a tiny jar as long as it's 'real' but nothing beats the generic $.30 french brand in France/Belgium. Also, to my PLEASANT suprise, the import grocer thing on the W.25th St. side of the WSM has stroopwafels! Not as fresh as picking them up in the Netherlands but they suffice! Now to actually leave work at 5:30pm on the dot and make it over to Import Haus is another story... Hmmm...I might have a "doctor's" apt.

July 25, 200717 yr well I will just need to ask them and report back! (in my best Tim Gunn voice) Make it happen!
July 25, 200717 yr now I am wondering is import huas has real dijon mustard. the focus is more German, still there are so many mustards. We are very fortunate to have THREE import food stores so close-Import haus, Athens, and the Import/Mediterranean Store in the market. All the shop keepers are great. A little more stoic and the Import Haus, but great service and products in all.
July 26, 200717 yr Here's the "non-shortened" version... And I'll post the map of the properties acquired (without the distortion that happened in the paper - not a good week). West Side Sun News July 26, 2007 MRN buys properties, no plans released yet By Ken Prendergast Staff Writer The developer of downtown’s East Fourth Street neighborhood has acquired a controlling interest in more than a dozen properties [correction: more than 20] totaling 3 acres, southwest of the intersection of Lorain Avenue and West 25th Street. Among the properties acquired by MRN Ltd., through MSR Holdings Limited Liability Corp., is the nine-story United Bank Building on the opposing corner from the West Side Market. The 83-year-old office building is a designated landmark. In fact, according to records from the Cuyahoga County Auditor’s office, MSR Holdings acquired a controlling interest in all but one of the properties fronting West 25th, from Lorain to Chatham Avenue. The only property in that stretch not acquired is a small building next to the United Bank Building and owned by Scott Drug Realty. As for MRN Ltd.’s plans, they’re not talking. There was no reply to an e-mail request for an interview sent Monday to MRN partner Ari Maron. Officials at Ohio City Near West Development Corp. also are unaware of MRN’s plans. “It’s a little early to know what’s being proposed,” said Abe Bruckman, director of real estate development at OCNW. “We’ve had a dialogue with the primary stakeholders in that area. There’s a need and an opportunity to reposition those properties. But it’s going to be up to the respective principals over there.” MRN took the lead in a $75 million downtown redevelopment of historic buildings along the narrow East Fourth Street, between Euclid and Prospect avenues. The tired neighborhood was converted into a lively district of rental and for-sale housing, along with restaurants, shops, nightclubs and theaters. The timing of MRN’s acquisitions appears to coincide with some upcoming major events and developments nearby. The West Side Market will celebrate its centennial in 2012 and fundraising is underway for a major facelift of Market Square Park on the northwest corner of West 25th and Lorain. “It’d be nice to see some things in place by that time,” Bruckman said. A key component for Market Square Park is the development of more attractive waiting facilities for Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority bus passengers. More than 5 million people travel through the intersection on RTA buses, with another 5 million traveling nearby on RTA’s Red Line, according to information on the Web site of ParkWorks, an organization that develops and promotes public parks and greenspaces. ParkWorks, along with OCNW, City Architecture and Cleveland Public Art, are leading the effort to rejuvenate Market Square Park. The City Planning Commission, as part of its 2020 Connecting Cleveland plan, is proposing more pedestrian- and transit-oriented development in the neighborhood, with more buildings along the sidewalks and parking lots set behind buildings or put in decks. “With the next step in the evolution of the market area, those properties (acquired by MRN) will play a catalytic role,” Bruckman said. ### "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 26, 200717 yr ^Great news. anyone else hear that Maron has purchased the ___________ Building on the SW corner of Lorain & W. 25 with the plan of renovating it for residential? Someone had the inside scoop six weeks early....
July 26, 200717 yr I have to pay more attention to theguv! I totally missed that message. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 26, 200717 yr ^Hey, I heard CA was looking for young architects seeking career growth in a dynamic and ever changing field. Sounds right up your alley.
July 26, 200717 yr This is interesting! Can anyone show me physically what we're talking about (I'm horrible at matching words to pictures for some reason). This could be awesome!!! If I stay in Cleveland, I'm thinking I'd like to move to OC when my lease is up in the GC (Gold Coast).
July 26, 200717 yr When I get home from work, I will post the map I made for the Sun article. It shows all 22 properties acquired thus far. And I say "thus far" because when you see the map, the scattering of properties suggests to me that MRN isn't done shopping.
