February 23, 201114 yr That's a very tough space to work with in terms of the height in creating a good atmosphere for a restaurant. If you have even been in Dante's in Tremont, it has a very similar circumstances. I don't really like it in Dante's, but the food is very good.
February 23, 201114 yr ^ that's easy. Just put in one of those drop down ceilings like I have in my basement. Kidding aside, I can see an issue with acoustics / reverb making the atmosphere somewhat loud. But still, stunning space. It's worth a shot.
February 23, 201114 yr Wow, beautiful space. I'm sure it will be accompanied by some problems with acoustics, but sign me up for having dinner there when it opens.
February 23, 201114 yr My father worked for Cleveland Trust from the 50's on and used to visit that building for business early in his career. He remarks about how sad it is that it is abandoned every time we go out to dinner in Ohio Ciy....glad to see a restoration coming.
February 23, 201114 yr So, it hasn't been used at all since it was a bank? How long was it abandoned?

And why not glass block those pesky windows while they're at it!!!!!
February 23, 201114 yr Drop ceiling, glass block, and faux wood panel walls- cutting edge architecture of the 70's.
February 23, 201114 yr what we will probably see are some large, thick curtains around those windows. most acoustic help will come from the flooring of this space.. unless.. is that a marble floor? or unfinished concrete. hard to tell from the angle of the photo.

Kidding aside, I can see an issue with acoustics / reverb making the atmosphere somewhat loud. But still, stunning space. It's worth a shot. It was a Jobs and Family Services office until about 2008 or so, and then they moved off fulton parkway. It was filled with cubicles. Since then it has been empty except maybe a special event. I understand a wedding reception was held there. The couple cleaned and decorated the space themselves Drop ceiling....of course!!!! And why not glass block those pesky windows while they're at it!!!!!
March 7, 201114 yr Lelolai Bakery is gone from W. 25th St and planning a move elsewhere. http://www.lelolaibakery.com/content/00/01/37/68/64/userimages/february%2028%202011%20letter%20to%20friends%20of%20Lelolai.pdf This weekend I saw some of the construction workers outside of the former Lelolai. They said it is under renovation for a new restaurant. They didnt elaborate any further.
March 7, 201114 yr Maybe that's where Dim Sum is going? Anyone know what area they decided to locate to?
March 8, 201114 yr I don't think Dim Sum is going there, unless they've decided to serve alcohol as well. The owner of the building circulated some info indicating he was seeking a liquor license for that space for the new tenant (not mentioned), but that it would be a restaurant, not a club.
March 9, 201114 yr New, expanding businesses to crop up in Ohio City with help from Charter One grant program Published: Tuesday, March 08, 2011, 8:56 PM Updated: Tuesday, March 08, 2011, 9:16 PM By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Seven small businesses will gain a foothold in Ohio City this year, with help from a first-of-its-kind partnership between Charter One bank and a neighborhood development group. A pair of twenty-something entrepreneurs with a zeal for commuting by bike; a popcorn and candy company that is rapidly expanding beyond its West Side Market stands; a personal-training guru; a chef; a florist; a boutique and letterpress studio; and a real estate agent with a side-gig making lamps and knick-knacks from reclaimed bits of demolished homes. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/03/new_expanding_businesses_to_cr.html

"And a $7,000 grant will help Nolan Konkoski and Molly Smith outfit a patio along Gould Court, a small street next to their future restaurant. The business partners plan to open a southern-inspired restaurant, Soho Kitchen and Bar, on West 25th in the summer." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/03/new_expanding_businesses_to_cr.html
March 9, 201114 yr Just an all-around great article filled with good news - I'm really happy to see the mention of the Campbells - genuinely wonderful people who believe in this city, and my god... the peanut-butter-cup popcorn and what I call "crack on a stick" (pretzel rod rolled in caramel, dark chocolate and cinnamon-sugar). clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 9, 201114 yr Campbells popcorn is amazing. I worked with Jeff (Campbell) before he left to go start his popcorn shop. I thought he was crazy at the time, but he obviously knew what he was doing. Anyone who hasn't tried their stuff yet needs to get their ass to the Market!
March 9, 201114 yr SoHo Kitchen and Bar will be fantastic - The chef is my brother in law and he is very talented. He is currently the chef at Tartine in Rocky River. (I also negotiated the lease on behalf of my sister and brother-in-law and found it hard to bite my tongue about them opening the restaurant until this article came out!)

March 9, 201114 yr This is sad news about Lelolai, and a real loss for the hood. How long have they been there? A new restaurant will be one step forward, one step back. Lelolai Bakery is gone from W. March 10, 201114 yr Development News long-abandoned ohio city tavern converted to fresh new housing Thursday, March 10, 2011 James DeRosa purchased the old Marshall McCarron's bar at Randall and John Avenue in Ohio City with dreams of reviving it as a hip restaurant. Then, in 2008, the economy did a spectacular nosedive. Unable to get a loan to make even basic repairs on the dilapidated property, DeRosa and his partners put their dreams on hold. A mounting list of code violations soon landed them in housing court. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/jamesderosa031011.aspx
March 10, 201114 yr ^Nice to see this finally finished. Looks great. Btw, yes it's true that Lelolai will be missed and was a unique asset for that area of W. 25th, but the Market District of OC can surely attract a similar establishment. I like the idea that some of the brick street (I think?) that is Gould Court ...and runs along the side of this building...will be a patio that should be hopping a large portion of the day and night, especially in good weather months. That just wasn't the case with the bakery. That's partly why the building next door was demolished years ago. To create an extension to the outdoors for whatever establishment was in that space. **EDIT: It could be that Lelolai will only move to a different area of OC. Who knows?
March 10, 201114 yr Well Lelolai is supposedly going to reopen elsewhere.... Congrats Jamie on the old McCarron's space!
March 10, 201114 yr Should this be posted this in Restaurant thread also or is that redundant??? SoHo Coming to Ohio City Posted by Douglas Trattner on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 11:26 AM Last week, chef Nolan Konkoski signed a lease to take over the former Lelolai Bakery space on W. 25th, which recently closed after exactly 10 years. By late summer, he and his partner Molly Smith will open SoHo Kitchen and Bar, the "SoHo" being short for Southern Hospitality. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/03/10/soho-coming-to-ohio-city
March 11, 201114 yr Hate to see Lelolai go, but hoping SoHo's a success. Hopefully, it'll add to the feeding frenzy that's Ohio City/Market Sq., which is on fire right now...
March 11, 201114 yr On the Cleveland Landmarks agenda for the 10th. This would be great for an ugly stretch of 25th. CONCEPT PLAN 1. Ohio City Historic District Ward 3 - Cimperman Odd Fellows Hall - Baehr Brewery - 1526 West 25th Street Renovation and addition http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/2011/03102011/index.php
March 11, 201114 yr Wow, this is terrific. That is the original smokestack on the Baehr Brewery, on the left there. I'm dumbfounded by the way the top half of the Odd fellows Hall was removed...incredible. That stuff was seen as old and stodgy to the new-fangled car generation. Things were to be sleek and boxy. This appears to have happened a few times in Cleveland in the middle part of last century. The Forest City Savings and Trust (now Massimo diMilano Bldg just down the street from this proposed project)... it had a decorative turret that stood as a gateway to Ohio City, the Schofield Building which obviously removed its rooftop ornamentation and wrapped itself in 1960s "aluminum", and evidently this Hall cut off its beautiful top. What were they thinking?
March 11, 201114 yr Actually neither the top of this building, nor the cupula on the Foest City Savings and Trust building were "removed" so to speak. There was actually a tornado that went downt West 25th street in 1954 that destroyed these items. Sadly the developer of this property proposed to add the 3rd and 4th stories back to this building to restore it to its original condition, but presevation laws do not allow it, since it has been in this condition for over 50 years it is considered part of the "history" of the building. The "period of significance" clause has some unfortunate results occasionally.

March 11, 201114 yr This is the best development on W. 25th in a long time, assuming it happens. Looks great...almost a whole block. And indoor parking!
March 13, 201114 yr ^This W. 25th redevelopment could be the jump-start that the north part of 25th needs. SORELY NEEDS! @Ohio City, thanks for the info. I'd like to look into your claims.
March 13, 201114 yr @Ohio City Correct me if I'm wrong... but where I have the red arrow, the cupola of the Forest City Savings and Trust is already gone. Also, Here is a list of tornadoes in Ohio in 1954 Source: National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2009/05/details_of_ohios_868_tornadoes.html?appSession=236206883504352 Date F Scale Counties 10/11/1954 1 Franklin 9/30/1954 2 Carroll 8/30/1954 1 Erie 8/12/1954 0 Erie 6/26/1954 1 Muskingum 6/26/1954 0 Franklin 5/2/1954 1 Hamilton 5/2/1954 0 Fulton 5/2/1954 0 Henry 5/2/1954 0 Fulton 5/2/1954 -9 Putnam 4/27/1954 2 Jefferson 3/19/1954 1 Ross Hocking
March 13, 201114 yr It may have been 1953, since according to some records was the year when the St. John's Episcopal Church on Church Avenue (right around the corner) was damaged. heres a bit about the path it took.. http://westparkhistory.com/Tornado1953/Tornado1953.htm
March 13, 201114 yr Thanks for the link, those recollections were very interesting to read. It must've been 1953. If my bearings are correct though on the photograph (w/ arrow), I'm still wondering about the FCS & T Bldg. Oh well, it's a shame they were altered...by nature or by man.
March 14, 201114 yr Decent video discussing the market and surrounding businesses. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110314/MULTI/303149998
March 21, 201114 yr A 100th birthday present for the WSM! Cleveland, West Side Market tapped to host International Public Markets Conference in 2012 By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer Published: Monday, March 21, 2011, 5:04 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland has edged out competitors -- including London and Toronto -- to host an international conference focused on public markets in 2012. The Project for Public Spaces, a nonprofit group based in New York, will announce today that it has tapped Cleveland as the host city for several days of discussions, events and tours http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/03/cleveland_west_side_market_to.html
March 21, 201114 yr Thanks for posting this. I think for the first ever on Cleveland.com, all the comments were positive.
March 22, 201114 yr ^ it has to be pretty exhilarating to be involved with a project like that! Agree with McNulty, this isn't going to hurt Great Lakes one bit. It's going to make the area even more of a destination.
March 22, 201114 yr Will Beir Markt (?spelling) still stay open, or will it be merged with the new facility?
