June 21, 201113 yr btw the girl's name is Valerie Mayen, and yes she was on Project Runway. She's a huge Cleveland cheerleader. Any girls, or guys with significant others, should definitely stop by and consider buying something. She definitely deserves the business.
June 21, 201113 yr This is really nice! Is the bus stop still near there? It was party to a lot of inappropriate loitering and other activity.
June 22, 201113 yr This is really nice! Is the bus stop still near there? It was party to a lot of inappropriate loitering and other activity. Which one are you talking about? The one in front of where Moda was, or the one by the WSM? I haven't noticed any loitering, and I live right there.
June 22, 201113 yr There use to be one right in front of where "Joy Machine Bike Shop" & "Yellowcake" is now. It was moved a little over a year ago. That bus stop was totally out of control (excessive loitering, drinking, drug sales, fights, urination, etc). The business & property owners in that area protested to RTA about it, and RTA agreed that it was a nuisance. The bus stop was moved one block north (in front of the hospital) and the problems dissipated. The people riding the bus were never the problem, it was the people that were using that bus stop for everything other than a bus stop (and that group did not like to hang at the new location - in front of Lutheran Hospital). I'm sure they just moved someplace else though.
June 22, 201113 yr The Yellowcake shop is a temporary pop-up shop. Valerie's done a pretty good job of moving these around to build some brand awareness locally ... She had one in Tremont and then the Theatre District and then Gordon Square and now in the Market District. I think the hours are more extensive at this one, however, then in the other pop-ups. Valerie is, however, working on a fashion incubator (http://www.buzzandgrowl.com/) that may eventually have some kind of shared retail component for local fashion designers.

June 23, 201113 yr I think that is a terrific, realistic and very well thought-out plan. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 23, 201113 yr Well, there were people drinking beer in the Market Garden Brewery last night. Not sure if it was a private opening event or what, but it looks like the official opening is right around the corner and I, for one, am friggin' excited! Hootenany likes beer gardens...

June 23, 201113 yr Well, there were people drinking beer in the Market Garden Brewery last night. Not sure if it was a private opening event or what, but it looks like the official opening is right around the corner and I, for one, am friggin' excited! Hootenany likes beer gardens... I see folks drinking, too. Was wondering if it was a soft opening, so I can take my visiting lady-friend to it tomorrow or Saturday. Anyone have any info?
June 23, 201113 yr I heard that, too, but didn't know if anyone had info on a possible soft opening taking place over the weekend. It'd make sense, with the Open Air Market and whatnot.
June 23, 201113 yr Last night was a soft opening for "Friends and Family". I heard they will open tomorrow - no fanfare just opening the doors. The official Grand Opening is the 27th. Using the time inbetween to work the kinks out.
June 25, 201113 yr Can't wait to get to the Market Garden Brewery; it really looks like it'll be a 1st class place... I was praying they'd be open by the 4th, esp with the Yankees, and a lot of New Yawkas floating around our center city... Sam McNulty, with his Bier Markt and Cento has single-handedly pushed Ohio City/Market Square from being totally dependent on WSM for foot traffic (and otherwise dead) to the more 24-hour buzz it now possesses. And MGB, along with Crop Bistro and other new joints, will make it even moreso... and you've gotta love BM/Cento's "We're open 365 Days/year" sign in the window, along with their (always) late night hours... This is a serious contra to Great Lakes' podunkish (and somewhat lazy/irresponsible) policy of closures on Sunday's and holidays.
June 26, 201113 yr Does anybody know the whereabouts of the beveled glass top window at Something Different gallery in the Market District? It was removed several weeks ago http://cbk0.google.com/cbk?output=tile&cb_client=maps_sv&panoid=ATK57kbBcTVs7xGN78chCA&x=0&y=0&zoom=2
June 26, 201113 yr Market Garden Brewery opened on Friday by the way. Official opening is tomorrow, the 27th. My wife had the fried chicken sandwich and I had some wings, both were great. The beer is fantastic as expected. The stout is especially delicious and the test ale is quite good as well. We tried 8 of the 10 beers and there wasn't a bad one in the lot. This place is going to do very well.
June 26, 201113 yr 8 strong beers? Hope you had a driver! Samples... and we took the bus. People look at you funny when you get on the bus with a half gallon of beer. We took a growler of the Pearl Street Wheat home with us. We also stopped in the Yellowcake shop and Joy Rides bicycle shop. Both are really cool spaces.
June 26, 201113 yr ^Micro brews and a bus ride home- THAT is the perfect Urban Ohio afternoon. Can't wait to check this place out- thanks for the info!
June 27, 201113 yr Went to Market Garden last night as well. The beer garden themed patio is very cool, unique use of steel, reclaimed brick pavers. Interior design is very nice also, including the colors, lighting & furnishings. Didn't try the food, it looked good as it was going by to other tables, but the beers we tried were excellent. I think this place is going to be a huge hit. Such a great location too, right beside the market. Makes you wonder why the space was never utilized better before.

June 29, 201113 yr Went to Market Garden for dinner last night. Very thoughtful food to go along with some outstanding beers. We sampled most of the beers and they were all expertly made. They all tended to be low-alcohol "session" beers, which I thought was a nice change of pace from what is normally produced these days. Not that I don't appreciate the big IPAs that now seem to be de rigueur. But I think this place is a little bit ahead of the curve when it comes to putting out beers that are well-balanced, understated, and sophisticated. We also had, I believe it was called, the Brewmaster's Board..or platter or something. It included a selection of cheeses, cured meats, and house made pickles that were perfectly complemented by the crisp and refreshing beers. Also got the Currywurst, which I couldn't possibly do justice through explanation. Suffice to say it is simultaneously disgusting and one of the best drunk foods ever created. Great atmosphere in the beer garden next to the market stalls, we'll definitely be back many many times.
June 29, 201113 yr ^^Currywurst, my interest is piqued...one of the best drunk foods I ever saw but haven't tried was the fried cheese sandwich slathered in Mayo that Anthony Boudain got from a street cart in the "No Reservations: Praque". Good to hear that the food and beer is up to snuff, sounds like another excellent addition to the area.
June 30, 201113 yr The Scene's quick review of McNulty's new brewery... Best thing, aside form the beer and food of course, is the mention that the rooftop patio is planned to open next year. Also, Saigon Grille on Superior Ave. is now open. Beer Here! Market Garden Brewery opens in Ohio City by Douglas Trattner http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/bites/Content?category=1520384
June 30, 201113 yr Does anybody know the whereabouts of the beveled glass top window at Something Different gallery in the Market District? It was removed several weeks ago http://cbk0.google.com/cbk?output=tile&cb_client=maps_sv&panoid=ATK57kbBcTVs7xGN78chCA&x=0&y=0&zoom=2 Now I noticed the facade. It looks like something may have broken. I hope it doesn't get left with plywood too long. Looks like crap like that.
June 30, 201113 yr The transom from Something different gallery, was unstable and needed to be taken down to be repaired and restored. It will return but we don't yet have a date as to when it will be reinstalled.
June 30, 201113 yr Currywurst! NOW I'm excited! I've been craving that ever since I got back from Berlin.
July 4, 201113 yr Market Garden was packed Friday night... very well done; huge. Word (via wait-staff) is that McNulty will add rooftop dining next summer... makes sense given the squat 1 floor architecture of the former Mediterranean Market... It's a game--changer for Ohio City -- has a major impact on W.25/market square. Never saw so many cabs ferrying people back 'n forth across the Detroit-Superior Bridge. MG really is helping punch Ohio City's ticket as a big-city, urbanized, exciting hood.
July 4, 201113 yr Any idea if/when Market Garden will be open for lunch? About 6 weeks ago, a coworker and I walked into the Bier Garden for lunch. A very nice woman there told us that they weren't open for lunch, just dinner. But then she explained that after Market Garden opened across the street in June, then both locations would be open for lunch daily. I'm worried that they've changed the plan ... as someone who works nearby, I was really excited about these two new lunch options!
July 4, 201113 yr Not sure, Paul. I suspect both spots will have lunch before long. Market Garden probably needs to get its sea legs first. I remember how long it took Bier Markt, in the pre-Bar Cento days, had practically no menu at all- just beer. It's come a long way since then. Not being a restaurateur, myself, I recognize that understanding, and even trying to influence, customer habits and patterns is such a tricky business. The explosive evening/night patronage of Market Garden would give one hope for a lunch crowd, but it may not exist right now -- at least in numbers enough to justify opening such a huge facilities. Cleveland is still ramping up to a more 24-hour city; we too have come a long way in a short period of time. If Market Garden was downtown with the more captive audience of 100K or so workers, then lunch would be an easier proposition... Being in a residential neighborhood, even being one close to downtown, may make opening for lunch iffy, at least during the week (Saturdays, with the WSM jam packed with folks, no problemo)... I suspect McNulty will try a pilot plan to test patronage... One thing's for sure, the other joints on the W. 25 strip are reaping the Market Garden bounty... The Turkish place, in particular, had empty outdoor tables at dinner time as of a few weeks ago. Friday night? Every outdoor table was taken. What will be interesting is to see if MG will suck patrons away from Bier Markt/Cento... McNulty vs. McNulty.
July 5, 201113 yr Found out the hard way (40 minute drive and very empty stomach) this weekend that Market Garden does not yet serve Saturday lunch, even though their website says they open at 11 on Saturday. Not happy. having accurate website not tough. Ohio City hopping though.
July 6, 201113 yr Website seems pretty clearly to say 4pm open, but there's one spot where it's unclear if Friday/Saturday lunch is something they do right now, or something, like Sunday brunch, that is 'coming soon'. The website definitely needs an update in more than one place.
July 6, 201113 yr We stopped by Market Garden for a beer and an app before the tribe game last night. My $.02, beers good, our tacos so-so especially for the price, service at the bar, not bad but not good either, hopefully they are just learning the system and clientele . Great patio/garden, interior was OK. We weren't blown away but they just open so it will only get better. I am more of a dingy pub sort of guy so it's probably strictly a summer spot for me....
