Nice story

Ton of good information about OC. Very positive!

Wish i still played baseball so i could get my hands on one of those bats!  Maybe i can get one as an xmas gift for someone.

I also noticed the lady in the country segment was obese -- moments after referring to the study saying that living in the city is healthier because people aren't as obese!

Seriously, great segment about Ohio City.

I noticed that also lol

Maybe it was really a segment on irony

Between the overweight country lady and the pitch-perfect lame local newsy puns, the whole segment was almost Onion-esque.  But it was awesome viewing: his glowing review of OC compared to her barely-disguised disgust in previewing the segment about the sticks...good stuff.

I watched the O.C. segment but missed the country segment.  Does anyone have a link to online video of the two?

^ can someone refresh my memory, what are the plans with that space?

Market Garden, went there a couple of weeks ago.

Loved the black bean tacos, absolutely great!

Liked the beer selection. Goes without saying, great selection.

Disliked the decor. The two friends I was with both questioned whether they were in Ohio City or Crocker Park. It's a little odd that across the street is a definite tourist destination in Great Lakes Brewery, yet if you were judging by the decors of GLBC and MG, you'd think MG was the tourist spot and GLBC was the local pub.

Overall solid B, but considering that I'm not their target market (who I believe is early 20 somethings, and not old farts like me) that's not a bad grade.

Can someone post what's happening with Jay Lofts? Are they finally turning this into something useful instead of a bad reminder of deals gone upside down?

Yeah, I went to Market Garden the other weekend and thought that the interior was very nice and done very well.  I guess I kinda see what you mean (with the booths and scale) but Mr. McNaulty is big time now, so I guess he's a bit beyond shabby chic (oh wait there were groupings of white candelabra/chandaliers hanging in the front)..

My out of town friends were impressed though.  The beers were good (we did the tasting), somewhat light and more subtle than Great Lakes.  Btw, Great Lakes charm is that it is like a historic pub... Elliot Ness etc....  MG is definately a young professional "hipster" joint.

I loved the beer.  The food was OK my first time around.  Really like the mussels, the wings were awful.  Will be back for beer.

I agree about the decor, but I thoroughly enjoyed everything else about the place, especially...

I had the wings the first night they were open.  Ordered them "hot".  They are by no means hot... at all, but I didn't think they were awful.  They were ok size and cooked properly, just didn't have the heat I was looking for.

^ I never had a "hot" wing in Ohio....except the time the Greenhouse Tavern gave me a side of ghost chilis. The midwest palatte is really delicate IMO

Was at the Market Brewery yesterday. Second time visit. I'm already a big fan of the beers, my wife loves their awesome pretzel. Waitress was amazing and gave us some freebie samples : )

I like the decor. It reminds me of a ski lodge for some reason. There was nothing in the interior to preserve like at Great Lakes. My bold prediction: the outdoor patio will be even more popular when it gets cold.

For a couple of reasons, I agree that this place will compliment rather than compete with Great Lakes.

For one, Great Lakes, whether intentional or not, caters to an older, more conservative crowd. They've always closed early, they book traditional music. Their events, while popular, are very very tame and the bands they enlist for them are often not-at-all trendy or musically relevant.

Second, the beer at Market is nothing at all like Great Lakes. Market's are generally lighter in body and nowhere near the hoppy-ness levels of Great Lakes. I was extremely surprised given there shared lineage. Beer aficionados from out of town will surely be hopping between both places.

Oh, and Market does carry some Great Lakes too. Pretty cool. A win-win for Ohio City.

Ooo, I'm gonna have to tell Mr. broccoli.  We prefer the lighter beers.  Did they have a good wheat beer?

Well, their wheat beer on tap was.....Great Lakes Holy Moses!

Please check them out and let us know what you and the husband think.

the pearl street wheat is delicious... I heard they were having a hard time keeping up with demand for it.

Pfft to Holy Moses.  Their beer menu online says they have a "Pearl Street Wheat"?

If only Indigo Imp had a restaurant.....  I heart "Blonde Bombshell".

ETA:  I see the mayor just posted about the beer I mentioned.  I'm gonna be super sad if I go there and they're out.  I guess I'll just have to call ahead!

Brooklyn lager is my drink of choice. Will definitely try it when I'm there next week

Pearl Street Wheat was fantastic.  I had it as part of the sampler.  The only beer they were out of was the IPA (and not the "soon to come" IPA but the other one they were supposed to already have).

Wheat beers are for grandmothers and little children! :-D Give me my stout!!

Although that Scotch Ale looks somewhat tasty.

Methinks this type of conversation belongs in the Restaurants, Local Events, & Entertainment section. Let's keep this to projects and construction.

Haunted Franklin Castle: Sale pending, renovation planned

Historic property will become 3 residences

By: Ted Kortan, newsnet5.com

CLEVELAND - Changes are coming to Ohio City's famous and supposedly haunted Franklin Castle.

On Monday, the city of Cleveland Planning Commission unanimously rezoned the castle property at 4308 Franklin Boulevard to allow for three residences.  Ward 3 Councilman Joe Cimperman told NewsChannel5 the rezoning was a condition of a pending sale and redevelopment of the historic castle and rear carriage house.

Cimperman would not reveal the identity of the alleged buyer except to say that it is a young woman with "the willingness and the wherewithal" to turn the space into her home and create two additional rental apartments.

Interesting reader comment after that story...

"We tried to go to closing 3 times in the last 12 months and the title could not transfer because of Michelle Heimburger’s $800k Federal Tax lien. If Michelle ever comes back to USA and pays her taxes, maybe the title will transfer at some point. This “residential renovation” will not happen. I still have valid agreements with the current owner, but Michelle and will have to come back to the USA and face this before anyone can buy it.

The Franklin Castle TV show is still going forward and will cover the sale of the Castle, when I purchase it from the IRS."

Fascinating history over the last 12 years. Sheesh. Hope the new buyer is more on the ball. Milsaps is clearly not the new buyer, and anything he posted on his website was delusion or outright falsehood. He seems pretty obsessed, though. I enjoy his lawyer dismissing it as "pure puffery".

That comment came from Charles Milsaps. He's a very odd man and reputed to be a pathological liar.

new ohio city storefront johnnyville slugger to fabricate custom baseball bats

Thursday, July 21, 2011

When asked why he decided to open his custom-engraved baseball bat store, Johnnyville Slugger, on W. 25th Street in Ohio City, owner Johnny Smatana naturally employed a sports metaphor.

"If you go to the Yankees and bat .280, they'll hate you," he says. "If you go to a little place where you can do some good, they'll still like you."

Smatana, whose career includes a stint playing football for the Miami Hurricanes and 27 years moving freight for Estes Forwarding Worldwide, says he spent a month looking at different locations, but felt most at home here.

"There's so much happening here; Ohio City is the most up-and-coming part of the city," he says. "Also, this part of the street was in dire need."

urban orchid adds flowershop to ohio city's artisan economy

With the recent opening of the Urban Orchid, a new flower and gift shop located at 2704 Bridge Avenue, an empty storefront has been filled and a new business has been added to Ohio City's artisan economy.

Owner Brandon Sitler describes the Urban Orchid as "a small gift boutique and full-service flower shop that offers custom arrangements and delivers flowers throughout Cuyahoga County -- and anywhere in the world, really." The cozy, 400-square-foot space boasts an open floor plan that allows customers to watch the floral designer at work.

Urban Orchid is the best flowershop in the world!  Ok a little self disclosure, this is my partners shop so I am biased (and invested) Please come and check it out for yourselves - great gifts from local artist/craftsmen and beautiful floral arrangements for any occasion.  So far the response has been great and we are happy to be one of the new businesses flocking to the neighborhood I have called home for the past 7 years.

That is great - definitely fills a void. wish you th best and will try my best to patronize your establishment next I'm in the neighborhood.

Did Campbells Popcorn (from the westside market) ever end up opening their shop and store on 25th?  It made the news months and months ago but haven't heard anything.  I checked their website and facebook site - but no mention of it.

I was just there a week ago and it looked like it was close to opening (if I'm remembering correctly).

Opens today, actually.

A block south of Lorain on the west side.

It's quite neat actually! The area is getting really cool one storefront at a time! Hopefully Yellowcake stays around and more affordable hip boutiques join also

Also, Deering Vintage is moving to the area from Tremont.

OK, what's this? It's on BZA's agenda for the end of this month.....

Just from a plain reading, isn't that for the Market Garden Brewery, and they're re-classifying it to conform with parking requirements since they don't have any and basically share with the WSM/W 25th? Looks that way. Maybe they got a notice they weren't in compliance or something.

Also, Deering Vintage is moving to the area from Tremont.

I hope more people support these businesses. Other places besides bars could use support---and I like to see the neighborhoods offer more than bars.

Does anyone know who owns the shopping center across Lorain from the wsm, and the likelihood, or unlikelihood, of them selling or redeveloping as mixed ?

I don't know, but none of the Market District planning future plans floating around keeps that plaza in it's current, suburbanesque incarnation.

Want to know who owns what? Go to the Cleveland Planning Commission GIS map. Zoom in until you can see parcel outlines. Then select "identify" and click on the parcel you're interested in. A window to the county auditor's site will open, showing you various tabs of info for that parcel. One of the tabs shows current and prior owners. Another tab shows who is receiving the property tax bills.

Awesome thing, this Internet....
