One thing that would help them immensely is if they simply bought a cooler and some drinks. All that popcorn makes people thirsty and I am positive they would have sales to increase their offerings! anyways, I explored that, and Penzeys, the entire area is really starting to take hold.

That's interesting. I had heard hostel rumors in Ohio City, but I haven't heard of one in that location prior to this article.

What it really needs are more apartments, not right on W. 25th. They should be developing all those lots east of West 25th, there's at least 4 city blocks there... Not to nit pick, but it's Room Service that has been an addition to Ohio City. "Made in 216" is the event put on by Room Service's proprietor. The facade being revealed at Jay Ave and W25th is really quite interesting. There aren't too many single story spaces like that defining major intersections in the city, and once it's filled will certainly make a significant impact on the entrance to our little street canyon, especially at night.

September 16, 201113 yr sf. Im sure that archangel is excited about the project, as we all are. But "not being satisfied" is what will continue to drive our city in the right direction. Its a long, hard fight we are fighting here to make our city outstanding. As happy as we are about an art museum in one of our hot neighborhoods, I would have to agree that we need to pack the residents into this area for it to continue to prosper. I cant speak for the landscaping comment, that had a negative spin...but as far as apartments...i have to agree.

September 16, 201113 yr I think the location qualms here are misguided. This is the kind of project that draws mass to it. The area, though great if you are interested in bondage gear, manholes, and bbq, will definitely get a shot in the arm from this.

The sf cost of renovating existing buildings for apartments is such that the banks won't lend for those types of projects right now. Ohio City Inc is very actively looking for ways to spur further apartment projects and the City is interested in helping out. For many reasons, this is a fantastic project. For one, this building was a hard one to sell and sat on the market for a while. It is only located one block south of Detroit, so it's not like it is hidden away in the neighborhood. The old fire house across the street also recently sold and is filling up with young entrepreneurs and their businesses. There is a lot of opportunity for growth and vibrancy in this corner of OC and we're seeing some strong building blocks come into place. Give it time, but this node will be taking off in a couple of years.
September 16, 201113 yr It's not too far away, because it's the CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART It's an anchor - and when you add an attractive anchor to a mall, all the little space between it and the other anchors suddenly becomes valuable. That's gonna happen here, too.
September 16, 201113 yr I hope you guys are right, but I suspect there won't be much spin-off in the immediate neighborhood from the visitors to this thing...it's not very big and still, I think, a little bit hidden away, so will probably be drawing relatively small, hard core art lovers, maybe like the old MOCA space. But it's definitely a great addition to that block and I'm sure it will add some business to the whole neighborhood. I do love the project. Interesting comments about apartments. Is there really nothing good available in OC? Any sense whether rents have been rising? I guess if downtown is at capacity it would be only normal if Ohio City was pretty tight too. In one of the recent articles describing recent developments in a the neighborhood, a developer was quoted saying that the Jay Hotel would never work as a market rate apartment project which was kind of a downer to hear. Could just be financing availability but I interpreted it being more about costs v. rents.
September 16, 201113 yr "the Transformer Station, as it will be called" Love this building, always have. Does the house next door come with it? I hope they nix that green at the entrance and on the house next door which could really be a beauty if done right. Looks like they used the same can of paint on both. RE the neighborhood. Isn't this Cleveland's gayest little neighborhood? Although there are some very sketchy areas not far away (north of here). Just south of here are some of OC's best homes on Clinton Ave (great Victorians). And, yes, Graham Veysey's purchase of an original OC Fire Station is just right across the street. Give this area a few more years... it may really take off.
September 20, 201113 yr Talked to some friends this weekend that got to go through the new "Crop" location on the corner of 25th & Lorain. Sounds like it's going to be fantastic. Beautiful renovations of the original interior art & murals. This area continues to grow & thrive.

September 27, 201113 yr There is quite a lot of property that is either available for purchase or underutilized directly around the Transformer Station. That whole dilapidated "Man's World" mixed-use complex/building directly north of the Transformer Station is for sale. All that land nearby is still cleared for the once planned Dexter Place townhouses. I also assume Gillespie still has site control and plans in hand for the Detroit-Superior Lofts building. Bop Stop and Club Cleveland Buildings are for sale, right? I hope something spins-off the transformer station.

September 28, 201113 yr Well the idea for the park follows and "orchard theme" with public art, seating and eating areas reminiscent of "fruit crates". The moon is representative of a "harvest moon", which will sit on the former water tower base on the Fries and Schulle Building. It will be lit in celebration of the harvest season.

That's a classical (and classy) area, with the century old WSM building and tower, storefronts in victorian buildings, an old department store building still in use, the grand St. Ignatius High School building looming in the background, tree-lined residential streets, etc. The last thing that neighborhood needs is a big, tacky, glowing fake moon sitting on a water tower holder dominating everything.
September 28, 201113 yr I think calling it a "classy" area might be a bit of a stretch with the cast of characters that make it so very interesting. It tends to be more funky than anything. But I cant tell from the odd scale in the picture how it would look. Im not sure the moon will even be a part of it if all the funding isnt in place. It was one proposed aspect of the plan, which likely would be one of the first to be cut if all the funding wasnt in place. I wasnt really sure what I thought of the orchard ladder concept, since Im not sure its apparnent what its trying to mimic.
