It's a great store.  I bought way too much when I went there last time, and I still have a few different varieties I want to go back and buy.  The Jalapeno popcorn was very good and the Cajun Cheddar was amazing.

I love their setup. I went for just a taste, and with shame did not buy anything, however, I will support them in the future. One thing that would help them immensely is if they simply  bought a cooler and some drinks. All that popcorn makes people thirsty and I am positive they would have sales to increase their offerings!

anyways, I explored that, and Penzeys, the entire area is really starting to take hold.

JJ,

I couldn't agree more. I walked in there to buy a bag last Saturday. After trying all the samples, I walked out with six.  My favorite was the Jalapeno and the Cajun Cheddar

"That's true too, but the problem with the Lorain Carnegie connection is that it dumps you onto the widest, busiest street in all of downtown, which will only get worse with casino traffic. "

That is one corner where a pedestrian/bike overpass may make sense.

OMG!  Sounds delicious!

From the Fresh Water article:

"We're planning on adding sidewalk dining, and the owners are close to signing a deal with a hostel that would occupy the floors above us."

That's interesting.  I had heard hostel rumors in Ohio City, but I haven't heard of one in that location prior to this article.

Ohio City's commercial investments extend beyond venerable West Side Market, breweries

Block by block, the resurgence of the commercial area surrounding West 25th Street in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood is spreading beyond the shadow of the West Side Market and the domains of breweries and restaurants in its Market Square District.

This is a subscriber article only. In previous posts, someone had said that if you copy the article title and Google it, you can read the whole article.

Great summary!

I didn't realize so much was happening.

At 1810 W. 25th St., at the southwest corner of West 25th and Jay, workers recently exhumed three storefronts that were bricked in and plan soon to begin removing bricks from sashes on the building's north side for another nine windows.

"Exhumed." Nice.

I've been there a year at this point, and the change in 12 months has been remarkable.

- Market Garden

- Joy Machines

- Johnnyville Slugger

- Campbell's Popcorn

- Made in the 216

- Palookaville Chili

- Orale

- Whatever ends up in the space discussed above

Just judging from how full the WSM parking lot is, even on off days, everyone (particularly Market Garden Brewery) is doing well.

What it really needs are more apartments, not right on W. 25th.

They should be developing all those lots east of West 25th, there's at least 4 city blocks there...

Not to nit pick, but it's Room Service that has been an addition to Ohio City.  "Made in 216" is the event put on by Room Service's proprietor.

The facade being revealed at Jay Ave and W25th is really quite interesting.  There aren't too many single story spaces like that defining major intersections in the city, and once it's filled will certainly make a significant impact on the entrance to our little street canyon, especially at night.

Ohio city couple transform rambling victorian into public concert venue

Thursday, September 15, 2011

It might not occur to the average house-hunting couple to keep an eye out for living rooms that can fit a string band and 40 folding chairs, but then, Lynn Phares and Joel Elvery are far from average.

Why else would the Cleveland couple decide to turn their massive Victorian home on W. 38th Street in Ohio City into a venue for house concerts six times a year?

The Mechanic Street House Concerts, which launched in January, continues this fall with a diverse lineup that includes the Spares, Mike Mangione and the Union, Putnam Smith and local favorites Brent Kirby and Mike Uva and the Bad Eyes.

Phares and Elvery, who moved here from Washington D.C. a few years ago after Elvery landed an academic post at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, got the idea from house concerts they'd attended in D.C.

new vegan bakery rises in ohio city's ever-expanding market district

Thursday, September 15, 2011

A new bakery on W. 25th Street is out to prove that dairy-free desserts can be just as addictive as the most decadent slice of chocolate cake -- while also cutting back on the calories, health risks, and guilt associated with many of our favorite vices.

Just ask Margaret Bilyeau, owner of the newly opened Maggie's Vegan Bakery, who boasts of her vegan "chocolate" cupcakes with "cream cheese" icing: "You need to come try them -- they're wonderful."

"The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Fred and Laura Bidwell Foundation join forces to create the Transformer Station gallery in Ohio City

Published: Thursday, September 15, 2011, 10:00 PM

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

The Transformer Station on West 29th Street in Cleveland, which once housed transformers for the long-defunct Cleveland Railway Co., will be transformed again into a gallery operated by the Cleveland Museum of Art and collectors Fred and Laura Bidwell.

For the first time in its 95-year history, the Cleveland Museum of Art is creating a permanent artistic presence on the city’s West Side.

In collaboration with the nationally recognized Akron art collectors Fred and Laura Bidwell, the museum will announce Friday at a press conference that it plans to open a 3,500-square-foot gallery in the former Cleveland Railway Co. transformer station at 1460 W. 29th St. in Ohio City, a block south of Detroit Avenue."

Whoa.

I run past that place sometimes. It could use some landscaping around it.

Again, all this new stuff is great, but what OC needs is apartments.

OM FREAKING G can you be more drab about something that is completely amazing? I mean when is Cleveland going to get out of it's negative doldrums? Just another jaw dropping inane response on this site. Just amaizng.

sf.  Im sure that archangel is excited about the project, as we all are.  But "not being satisfied" is what will continue to drive our city in the right direction.  Its a long, hard fight we are fighting here to make our city outstanding.  As happy as we are about an art museum in one of our hot neighborhoods, I would have to agree that we need to pack the residents into this area for it to continue to prosper.

I cant speak for the landscaping comment, that had a negative spin...but as far as apartments...i have to agree.

Interesting and exciting! And now it makes sense why it was called the "Bidwell Building" when it hit landmarks review back in December (see below)

I think this project is really awesome.  I sort of wish it were located a little closer to the commercial heart of Ohio City or Gordon Square for better visibility and to help build critical mass, but this is really really cool.

Wow, pretty snazzy renderings on the landmarks agenda of a significant add-on to the old power station on W. 29th: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/12092010/index.php

Full set here: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/12092010/index.php#gallery

Google maps indicates it's home to Light Sculpture Works, but their website shows a Moreland Hills address (http://www.lightsculptureworks.com/).  Anyone know who's behind this project?

Id have to agree. Still awesome news!

I think the location qualms here are misguided. This is the kind of project that draws mass to it. The area, though great if you are interested in bondage gear, manholes, and bbq, will definitely get a shot in the arm from this.

Save the hyperbole. Of course I'm glad to see more development. And Math is right - that street needs new stuff, so it's especially good. I'm merely surprised, given the almost non-availability of good rental apartments around here, that so much is happening that doesn't involve that. That should not be taken as a criticism of any particular development.

If ten more things get added to Ohio City (and they will), that's great. If none of them are apartments, that's a strange omission. People are the best anchor for a neighborhood.

The sf cost of renovating existing buildings for apartments is such that the banks won't lend for those types of projects right now. Ohio City Inc is very actively looking for ways to spur further apartment projects and the City is interested in helping out.

For many reasons, this is a fantastic project. For one, this building was a hard one to sell and sat on the market for a while. It is only located one block south of Detroit, so it's not like it is hidden away in the neighborhood. The old fire house across the street also recently sold and is filling up with young entrepreneurs and their businesses. There is a lot of opportunity for growth and vibrancy in this corner of OC and we're seeing some strong building blocks come into place. Give it time, but this node will be taking off in a couple of years.

It's not too far away, because it's the CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART

It's an anchor - and when you add an attractive anchor to a mall, all the little space between it and the other anchors suddenly becomes valuable. That's gonna happen here, too.

I hope you guys are right, but I suspect there won't be much spin-off in the immediate neighborhood from the visitors to this thing...it's not very big and still, I think, a little bit hidden away, so will probably be drawing relatively small, hard core art lovers, maybe like the old MOCA space.  But it's definitely a great addition to that block and I'm sure it will add some business to the whole neighborhood.  I do love the project.

Interesting comments about apartments.  Is there really nothing good available in OC?  Any sense whether rents have been rising?  I guess if downtown is at capacity it would be only normal if Ohio City was pretty tight too.  In one of the recent articles describing recent developments in a the neighborhood, a developer was quoted saying that the Jay Hotel would never work as a market rate apartment project which was kind of a downer to hear.  Could just be financing availability but I interpreted it being more about costs v. rents.

"the Transformer Station, as it will be called"

Love this building, always have.

Does the house next door come with it? I hope they nix that green at the entrance and on the house next door which could really be a beauty if done right. Looks like they used the same can of paint on both.

RE the neighborhood. Isn't this Cleveland's gayest little neighborhood?  Although there are some very sketchy areas not far away (north of here).

Just south of here are some of OC's best homes on Clinton Ave (great Victorians). And, yes, Graham Veysey's purchase of an original OC Fire Station is just right across the street. Give this area a few more years... it may really take off.

Talked to some friends this weekend that got to go through the new "Crop" location on the corner of 25th & Lorain.  Sounds like it's going to be fantastic.  Beautiful renovations of the original interior art & murals.  This area continues to grow & thrive.

^Yeah, I can't wait to see it.

There is quite a lot of property that is either available for purchase or underutilized directly around the Transformer Station. That whole dilapidated "Man's World" mixed-use complex/building directly north of the Transformer Station is for sale. All that land nearby is still cleared for the once planned Dexter Place townhouses.  I also assume Gillespie still has site control and plans in hand for the Detroit-Superior Lofts building. Bop Stop and Club Cleveland Buildings are for sale, right?  I hope something spins-off the transformer station.

Are there any renderings or links for more info on the Market Square Park redevelopment. I know I had seen things in the past, but work is well under way there and I haven't been able to find any recent info.

whats that moonball all about?

Well the idea for the park follows and "orchard theme" with public art, seating and eating areas reminiscent of "fruit crates".  The moon is representative of a "harvest moon", which will sit on the former water tower base on the Fries and Schulle Building.  It will be lit in celebration of the harvest season.

whats that moonball all about?

LOL, that was my first thought.  Please, no moonball!

What's wrong with it?

It's tacky for starters.  JMO.  Personally, I don't care for how it interplays with and distracts attention from the WSM tower.

What's wrong with it?

Yeah..  Remember it would glow like the harvest moon!

It's tacky for starters.  JMO.  Personally, I don't care for how it interplays with and distracts attention from the WSM tower.

Exactly.  That's a classical (and classy) area, with the century old WSM building and tower, storefronts in victorian buildings, an old department store building still in use, the grand St. Ignatius High School building looming in the background, tree-lined residential streets, etc.  The last thing that neighborhood needs is a big, tacky, glowing fake moon sitting on a water tower holder dominating everything.

I think calling it a "classy" area might be a bit of a stretch with the cast of characters that make it so very interesting.  It tends to be more funky than anything.  But I cant tell from the odd scale in the picture how it would look.

Im not sure the moon will even be a part of it if all the funding isnt in place.  It was one proposed aspect of the plan, which likely would be one of the first to be cut if all the funding wasnt in place.

I wasnt really sure what I thought of the orchard ladder concept, since Im not sure its apparnent what its trying to mimic.

I love the harvest moon. It will look awesome at night. I hope it can get funding. I mean it is an artisans district, right? Come on peoples, lighten up.

its one of those things that will become a fixture in twenty years.  when it gets old and the city threatens to take it down, the 2040 version of urbanOhio will complain, saying how it adds to the character of the neighborhood.

I think the moon is gonna work,  I hope it goes up.

They've got to keep the illumination and everything else about it in good maintenance though or it could become a 'minus'.

I like the moon.  Empty water tower stands look awful, and I'm for almost anything that lights up.

Hey does anyone know what they are doing in that building on the West side of W. 25th street next to Lutherin Hospital on Vestry Rd.? I think it used to be a hardware or lumber store?

Are the old stone structures from the park being used for anything or did they get thrown away?

Haha exactly. I am excited to see this thing! Its really this kind of stuff that can truly improve a place.
