From what I know, it is an idea without funding.

I hope it stays that way! :P

As far as adding character to the neighborhood, do any of the neighborhoods we are currently trying to preserve (anywhere in the country even) have cheesy moonballs (or anything like that) hanging over them?  No, neighborhoods which survive long term are aesthetically pleasing in a useful way, not in a tacky, asking for attention way.  We want this to be Ohio City, not Disney World.

If some eccentric owner were to put up the Harvest Moon I'd be all for it.  As a part of a funded arts project, no thanks.  I'd have faith in the eccentric person to make the thing substantial and maintain it.  Getting permission and access to that property and inevitably contracting out the work on the Harvest Moon is just a bad idea.

Hey does anyone know what they are doing in that building on the West side of W. 25th street next to Lutherin Hospital on Vestry Rd.? I think it used to be a hardware or lumber store?

The owner is doing a storefront renovation so that he can make it more attractive to potential tenants.

^and it's potential rebirth is helping extend the retail district up W. 25th.

I like the moon.  Empty water tower stands look awful, and I'm for almost anything that lights up.

I like the idea too. Like you, I'm also for almost anything that lights up. I don't see the big problem with it. It funky and different. So why not do it? We could use a little more "funky".

Tacky? Distracts from the WSM tower? Perhaps you can't concentrate on more than one thing? Did you perhaps think it could illuminate and highlight the WSM? No? Guess not.

It's tacky for starters.  JMO.  Personally, I don't care for how it interplays with and distracts attention from the WSM tower.

^Wow, you are a seriously prickly guy.

I think the moon might end up being both kind of tacky and endearing in its literalness.  If it gets built, I hope the moon takes on a life of its own...I can easily imagine a new tradition (sanctioned or guerrilla) of it getting dressed up in relation to local events.  It would probably need an official unofficial name too.

I like the idea too. Like you, I'm also for almost anything that lights up.

The Rock-O-Meter would have lit up, too.

Eaaaaasy there Trigger.  I hope you don't mind, but we like to share different perspectives on here and public art is certainly something that will inspire differences of opinion.

Touche.  I still like the moon though.

Seriously sfbob, every one of your posts is taking a shot at something someone else has posted. Maybe you should spend less time on here and more time looking  into some anger management therapy.

I totally, totally heart the moonball. I just hope we can figure out how to make it drop at New Year's :D

Re: The Transformer Station being too far away from all the surrounding action, as 3231 points out, it's about a three-minute walk from Detroit. It's also worth noting that it's about a block from the Intermuseum Conservation Association, the oldest regional art preservation organization in the country. Inside their giant facility, they're restoring presidential curtains, a large-scale mural from a Pittsburgh suburb, panels from a Coney Island carousel and a whole lot of other art. The organization is increasingly focusing on outreach about their work, so these two together could be some great anchors for a little artisan node in this section of Detroit.

Although I do hope my gay brethren don't lose their debauchery row right there ... This little section of Detroit is the closest thing to a walkable gayborhood that Cleveland's got (the closest contenders are Edgewater and Asiatown, where gay venues are much more spread out). I'd actually love to see this built upon instead of priced out, particularly if the senior LGBT housing plan is ever reignited.

Maybe Ohio City's momentum means spill over progress here too??

Condemned Franklin Castle is sold, may have new life yet

Published: Sunday, October 02, 2011, 4:45 PM    Updated: Sunday, October 02, 2011, 5:02 PM

By Michael K. McIntyre The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The historic Franklin Castle in Ohio City has been haunted in recent years by unfulfilled dreams and unfinished renovation. An exorcism may be imminent.

The Toronto-based owner of the property, Michelle Heimberger, sold the property last month to Oh Dear! Productions for $260,000.

Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman says the 19th century gothic-style castle would be divided into two residential units in the main house and another in the carriage house on the property.

Cleveland architect Robert Maschke has been instrumental in the deal, he said, working with Heimberger and with the buyer, a European tapestry artist named Chiara Dona dalle Rose.

I hope so. Considering the history of that place, I figured it for a haunted-theme B&B!

ParkWorks and Cleveland Public Art merge for form LAND Studio

http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2011/10/parkworks_and_cleveland_public.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- ParkWorks and Cleveland Public Art have decided they can do more to transform the city’s public realm together than separately.

In a move echoing a wave of collaborations and mergers sweeping the city’s arts and culture sector, the two influential nonprofits have decided to join together to form a new organization called LAND Studio.

The name -- an acronym for Landscape, Art, Neighborhoods and Development -- sums up the organization’s scope and field of action

Abandoned Franklin Castle in Cleveland to become homes</a>

CLEVELAND - A 19th century Cleveland castle that inspired ghost stories while lying empty for many years will be converted into three homes.

Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman tells The Plain Dealer that the gothic-style Franklin Castle has a new owner who plans to divide the main house into two residential units and set up a third in the carriage house.

More on tap than beer in Ohio City; 60-bed hostel signs lease near Cleveland's West Side Market

Tuesday, October 04, 2011

By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mark Raymond has visited more than 70 countries and slept at more than 100 hostels.

Now the 30-year-old Geneva man plans to open his own budget-oriented inn, where beds will start at $25 a night. The Cleveland Hostel, near the West Side Market in Ohio City, will be the only such stopover in Northeast Ohio.

A smaller hostel in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park closed several years ago.

Can't a week pass by without some huge Ohio City development being announced? We're getting spoiled here.

Aren't there enough transient shelters in O.C.  :drunk:  ... Just kidding!  :wink2:  I stayed in one of these a few times and they weren't very clean with basics. Hope this will be a better presentation.

Yes, isn't it terrible!! :)

The hostel is cool, but what I'm really curious about is this Ari Maron "Marketplace Redevelopment" that is taking up an entire block.  What, if any, are the plans there?

^Most of that is already in place with Crop, Penzy's, Room Service, Campbell's, Sweet not Salty, and now the hostel.

^Gotcha, thanks. I didn't realize maron was steering that.  I thought this might be some new plan.

You'll find other references to the plan here in this thread.

No more restaurants please. How about something useful for those who actually live here for a change.

Just curious EC, what would you like to see?

^What ever it is he will definitely want to see it power washed and nicely painted.

people go to regular stores too. clothes, hardware, banks, bookstore or music store (if those are even in existance anymore). for kids, maybe some kind of dance studio or karate place, or a place to learn instruments. in the realm of food, coffee, bakery, pizza takeout.  affordable stuff that doesn't have a bar attached to it.  maybe these things exist in ohio city, im only really familiar with w. 25.

Yes, because all of this redevelopment is so bothersome.  It's horrible to have people in the neighborhood, spending money and walking around!  It's horrible that empty storefronts are being filled!  Seriously, you had the same broken record complaint about E 4th being a "hog trough" where people were too busy "feeding their faces."  People like restaurants.  Vibrant cities have restaurants.  If the market can bear it, what's the problem?

Most of these things exist on or immediately adjacent to West 25th, actually. There's a pretty good bookstore (Horizontal Books), there's a coffee place right by Market Square that isn't too expensive, you can get bakery in the West Side Market (not every day, granted), food - again, West Side Market, Dave's if you prefer a supermarket (I'll grant you this Dave's is a bit pricey), there's a Yoga place above Dragonfly, Elegansia is a clothing store (next to where Moda was/Mitchell's will be), and there was a pop-up clothing store across the street recently. Also, there's a bike shop, a little electronics store (anyone know the deal with that place?), and something will be going in the empty but now renovated storefront across from the projects/next to Lutheran.

We do lack a good sit-down pizza place, and the neighborhood isn't terribly kid friendly, although it's not really hostile either. St. Ignatius students use Ohio City Burrito as an afterschool hangout, they seem like the best customers. They're always there when I stop in. There's a library walking distance, but it's pretty overwhelmed by unsupervised kids. They need other places to go.

I totally share concern for the long-term fortunes of the neighborhood and I've commented several times that I'd like to see more affordable rental apartments, redevelopment of public housing, and I'm sure many people here would still like to see the RTA Red Line station on the 'better' side of Lorain, but things are pretty good. It's still okay to criticize. But we can enjoy what we've got, too!

All yours.

good lord!

Wow! What an awesome space!

Can someone in the know make some sort of Ohio City project break down... maybe kind of like how I did one for University Circle:  http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,2977.msg577274.html#msg577274

In the past three months, I have completely lost track of all the storefront renovations, additions, and proposals.  Ohio City is advancing too quickly for me!

^Well, here's one more project that could go on the breakdown :)

Part of an influx of young entrepreneurs in Ohio City, Raymond signed a lease last week for 8,500 square feet at 2084 W. 25th St.

The three-story building will hold 60 beds and a shared kitchen. It could include a rooftop patio and bike-rental shop. Raymond hopes to have his own apartment in the building, in a retail-and-office redevelopment called Marketplace.

Looks like Bridge Avenue is getting repaved.

Received notice it was being paved from West 28th to west 44th.

Dude, that's like really old news. And I think the correct statistic is that single-bedroom apartments are 95% occupied. But that's still a very important stat.
