September 29, 201113 yr I hope it stays that way! :P As far as adding character to the neighborhood, do any of the neighborhoods we are currently trying to preserve (anywhere in the country even) have cheesy moonballs (or anything like that) hanging over them? No, neighborhoods which survive long term are aesthetically pleasing in a useful way, not in a tacky, asking for attention way. We want this to be Ohio City, not Disney World.
September 29, 201113 yr If some eccentric owner were to put up the Harvest Moon I'd be all for it. As a part of a funded arts project, no thanks. I'd have faith in the eccentric person to make the thing substantial and maintain it. Getting permission and access to that property and inevitably contracting out the work on the Harvest Moon is just a bad idea.

September 30, 201113 yr ^Wow, you are a seriously prickly guy. I think the moon might end up being both kind of tacky and endearing in its literalness. If it gets built, I hope the moon takes on a life of its own...I can easily imagine a new tradition (sanctioned or guerrilla) of it getting dressed up in relation to local events. It would probably need an official unofficial name too.

I just hope we can figure out how to make it drop at New Year's :D Re: The Transformer Station being too far away from all the surrounding action, as 3231 points out, it's about a three-minute walk from Detroit. It's also worth noting that it's about a block from the Intermuseum Conservation Association, the oldest regional art preservation organization in the country. Inside their giant facility, they're restoring presidential curtains, a large-scale mural from a Pittsburgh suburb, panels from a Coney Island carousel and a whole lot of other art. The organization is increasingly focusing on outreach about their work, so these two together could be some great anchors for a little artisan node in this section of Detroit. Although I do hope my gay brethren don't lose their debauchery row right there ... This little section of Detroit is the closest thing to a walkable gayborhood that Cleveland's got (the closest contenders are Edgewater and Asiatown, where gay venues are much more spread out). I'd actually love to see this built upon instead of priced out, particularly if the senior LGBT housing plan is ever reignited.

It's horrible to have people in the neighborhood, spending money and walking around! It's horrible that empty storefronts are being filled! Seriously, you had the same broken record complaint about E 4th being a "hog trough" where people were too busy "feeding their faces." People like restaurants. Vibrant cities have restaurants. If the market can bear it, what's the problem?

Most of these things exist on or immediately adjacent to West 25th, actually. There's a pretty good bookstore (Horizontal Books), there's a coffee place right by Market Square that isn't too expensive, you can get bakery in the West Side Market (not every day, granted), food - again, West Side Market, Dave's if you prefer a supermarket (I'll grant you this Dave's is a bit pricey), there's a Yoga place above Dragonfly, Elegansia is a clothing store (next to where Moda was/Mitchell's will be), and there was a pop-up clothing store across the street recently. Also, there's a bike shop, a little electronics store (anyone know the deal with that place?), and something will be going in the empty but now renovated storefront across from the projects/next to Lutheran. We do lack a good sit-down pizza place, and the neighborhood isn't terribly kid friendly, although it's not really hostile either. St. Ignatius students use Ohio City Burrito as an afterschool hangout, they seem like the best customers. They're always there when I stop in. There's a library walking distance, but it's pretty overwhelmed by unsupervised kids. They need other places to go. I totally share concern for the long-term fortunes of the neighborhood and I've commented several times that I'd like to see more affordable rental apartments, redevelopment of public housing, and I'm sure many people here would still like to see the RTA Red Line station on the 'better' side of Lorain, but things are pretty good. It's still okay to criticize. But we can enjoy what we've got, too!

It could include a rooftop patio and bike-rental shop. Raymond hopes to have his own apartment in the building, in a retail-and-office redevelopment called Marketplace.
