Tremendous!

Maybe someday we can also replace those cobra head light standards on the LC bridge with something a little nicer.

Big love for Ohio City and the West Side Market. Cleveland is starting to grow on me.

^I was just going to say - great photos, but I'm hoping those lights are yanked down and replaced with something more appropriate (and more conducive to photography).

Lets hope so.  I know they are adding sidewalk lights that will be more appropriate (which may even serve to make the street lights look even worse)

Glad to see the granite though!

UPDATE:  It looks they will be alternating the current street lights with the black lamp posts.

^Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to see the granite.  Man, that second to last photo really shows just how obscenely wide Lorain is at the western end of the bridge.  Not just six lanes, but six crazily wide lanes.

Big love for Ohio City and the West Side Market. Cleveland is starting to grow on me.

So I guess it wont be winter after all, but should be worth the wait.

Mitchell's Ice Cream move to Ohio City expected in spring of 2013

Mitchell's Ice Cream will move its production facilities into Ohio City by this spring, said Mike Mitchell, partner with his brother Pete in the local seven-store company.

Hmm, this is interesting.  Uptown??

Mitchell also announced that he expects his new University Circle store will open by December.

So glad to hear something from Mitchell's Ice Cream on their planned move to OC (other than facebook).

Although I dont think they'll be open in the Spring...so many announced openings are happening months later.

I believe the Uptown location was announced a while ago, although I hadn't heard anything recently.

Calendar No. 12-153: 2717 Lorain Avenue Joe Cimperman

19 Notices

Hansa Import House, Inc., owner, and Boris Music appeal to change use of a retail store to include a brewery for products sold or consumed on the premises only and a restaurant including outdoor patios, proposed to be on a 40’ x 100’ corner parcel located in a C3 Local Retail Business District; requesting a variance from an accessory off-street parking requirement of 41 spaces, plus one for each employee; determined according to Section 349.04(f) that requires one space for each four seats, plus one for each employee. There are 246 seats proposed, resulting in an initial parking requirement of 62 spaces, plus the employee parking, and of that amount, a reduction by 33% pursuant to Section 343.23(i) and the benefit of a Pedestrian Retail Overlay District, results in a requirement of 41 accessory off-street parking spaces, plus one for each em-ployee. (Filed 8-20-12; no testimony taken.)

First postponement requested by Ohio City Incorporated for additional time to finalize a parking strate-gy and present the plan to the South of Lorain Block Club

And here's some of the graphics that were presented to the Landmarks Commission on Sept 27:

Im impressed! I think it looks great, and really like how it sticks to a modern Barvarian style. Another great asset to the neighborhood and city

Looks great!

Wow! Very nice.

Stunning front entrances. I have always like this building. Although i do miss the giant armored person that used to be there

Lots of outdoor space for them to work with there.  Looks to me like they'll have three unique outdoor spaces.  Should be a great addition to the neighborhood!

^First floor, behind the stairs, next to and behind the bathrooms.  In other words in between the first floor bar and the brewery.

Did anyone go to the parade/streetfest yesterday?  I went and while the rain sucked, it was still pretty fun.  There still seemed to be a lot of people down there and the food vendors seemed pretty steady throughout the day.  I guess they cancelled Carlos Jones who was to be the headliner.

I hope they make it an annual thing - just move the event to September.

I took a few pics, but with the rain, I mostly kept my camera in the bag.  If I have anything good, I will post.

Did anyone go to the parade/streetfest yesterday?

Yep.  We went down there from 11 - 12:30 (had to leave for naptime for the kid) and we got to eat some food, drink some beer and watch the parade.  I skipped out on the food trucks and went down 25th to the tables and had some palookaville chile.  I love that place.  The kid had a blast running around the new park and splashing in puddles.  There was a good amount of people there and the Rapid station was pretty busy when we arrived and departed.

Too bad about the weather though.

I hope they make it an annual thing - just move the event to September.

Correct again.

Agree we shouldn't have to wait another 100 years for another big party! That was tremendous. Very well attended despite the rain. And one can only imagine how much bigger the crowds would've been in nicer weather.

Also, the event allowed more people to easier discover the more "fringe" attractions; ie W25 south of Lorain and Lorain west of W25.

p.s. talked to owner of Hansa Haus, expecting construction to start very soon!

It was very encouraging to see how many people were out in that weather.

Actually i'd hope that any future festivals would be held in October...the weather we've been having has been below normal for most of Sept and Oct... not indicative of the beautiful days that we can get this time of year.

Anyway, some pics

How about late September or Early October....something like...an Oktoberfest???  Seems a natural fit to me.

I went to the festival with my wife and we had a great time in spite of the weather.  That rain just wouldn't quit though...

There is no doubt in my mind this should become an annual festival.  The Market District is hot right now so leverage that into a great city festival!  I do like the weekend they selected though.  The festivals seem to abruptly end in mid September so it's nice to have something in October.  You never know what you'll get in early October, but what we got on Sunday is on the extreme cold and rainy side of it.

I also think the event on Sunday should start a conversation about Sunday Market hours.  Some of the busiest days at grocery stores are Sundays, right?  So why is the Market not open for vendors that want to sell that day?  I could see the Market become a really hot after-church destination for families.

That conversation never seems to get very far, as the vendors adamantly oppose any expansion of hours.

Didn't think of that! Great idea

Agreed.

Obviously weather is pure luck.  If the event was Saturday or today, it would have been fine weatherwise.

Or maybe a 'Marktoberfest'. Yes, no? OK it needs work...

My wife and son were in the parade. I loved seeing 25th shut down and lined with booths and people. i agree with the other sentiments that there should be a festival like that every year.

As far as Sunday market hours, a good key to understanding why there is resistance is understanding that it isn't a grocery store. I used to wish for them as well, but after shopping there as my primary source for produce, dairy and meats for the past 8 years, I see the vendors points--which are varied.

Let me apologize ahead of time for not knowing where to post this question....and for being off topic. Let me start by stating that my parents live in Gainesville, GA....part of the Atlanta area. My question is regarding The Cleveland Metro area vs. The Atlanta Metro area. I know the Atlanta Metro is defined as having 5.something million people. I know that Northeast Ohio is defined as having approximately 4.5 million people, but the Cleveland Metro area alone is defined as 2.2 Million people. After looking at the 28 county metro area of Atlanta, half of the counties (and their county seats) were at least 60 miles or more away from the city of Atlanta itself. My question is, why does Atlanta get the media advantage of having all these extra counties included in their metro, but Cleveland just gets the 6 - 8 counties right adjacent to, right next to it? I hope you get what I'm saying and can try to help me understand. Thanks.

The basis of this question is discussed here quite a bit, but certainly not in this thread. The following link is to the 2010 Census thread which frequently deals with pieces of the answer to your question. But as you're not really interested in the census itself you may just want to start your own thread asking the question under the "City Discussion" subforum.

I'll gladly celebrate Marktoberfest with all of you.

And really, at this point do the venders even have to open to have a big event?  I'd be content with having the doors of the Market open just to walk through. The neighborhood is enough of a draw as it is.

Marktoberfest sounds good to me

Thank god.  That was such a headache for Tremont residents.  Basically couldnt bike or walk downtown if we wanted to.  Now if we can just get that West 3rd street bridge up and running....

I like the new bridge-scape, however, with the lack of protective fencing so far (are their plans to replace it?) their may be a safety component when some who thinks they're being cute, might get the bright idea of pitching litter like glass bottles down below...  Doesn't the rapid run through below?

there is still quite a lot of finishing work to do, including adding the protective fencing.  they just opened it to 2 way traffic as soon as possible.

rapid doesnt run below until just west of columbus

This is great news!! Let's get this part of the strip going...

The Cleveland-based developer The Foran Group has announced plans to convert a pair of historic buildings on W. 25th Street in Ohio City into 70 market-rate apartments. The game-changing project, in the works for several years, is the first big new housing project to get off the ground here since the Great Recession.

Positioned between the success of Ohio City's Market District and the popular Stonebridge apartment, office and condo complex, the new West 25th Street Lofts will bring fresh life and vibrancy to a critical dead zone in the heart of Ohio City.

Super Duper

I saw some guys who appeared to be touring the building about a month ago outside.  I bet these units will fill before they even open.

Also, as of about a month ago the yellow brick building is gone...

Now if there were only market rate apartments across the street on West 25th as well.

"Market Rate" = directly across from CMHA

West Side Market, starting second century, will see public investment, private fundraising pitch

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- West Side Market shoppers, rejoice: Revamped public restrooms come first on a long list of repairs planned for the historic building.

Cleveland's public market turned 100 on Friday, entering a new century with all the aches and pains of old age.

Fixing the most severe of those ailments, from the dingy bathrooms to clogged pipes, would cost nearly $2.5 million, according to a detailed study of the property by Westlake Reed Leskosky, a local architectural firm. Toss in other trouble spots and a few opportunities, like the potential transformation of a long-forgotten second-floor locker room into an events space, and the bill approaches $8.6 million.
