Columbus developer has big plans for Flats West Bank

According to three sources who agreed to speak off the record, Flats West Bank property owner Jeff Jacobs has agreed to sell 5.6 acres of prime riverfront land near downtown Cleveland to a Columbus-based real estate developer.

The potential for another building on 25th is exciting.  I think dropping more residents right around 25th will help a lot with sustaining businesses in the neighborhood, especially along the lower end of 25th.  The during the week v. weekend business disparity will be narrowed a lot with more people living right there.

Plus, the Market District is close to the West 25th-Ohio City Red Line station. If only more Red Line stations had similar levels of density near them (and more than one downtown station), it wouldn't be the second-least used heavy-rail transit line in the nation. We need to better capitalize on the infrastructure investments we already have, especially those that are environmentally benign.

Don't want to spin this off topic but I am curious...what is the least used heavy rail line in the nation.

This and the possible remodel of the Ohio City station head house to better connect to Intro should help a lot.  Having one downtown station definitely prevents me from using the red line more... living in Playhouse Square its faster to bike, scooter or... ? *drive* to Ohio City that it would be for me to walk to Tower City and wait for a train.  I'd like to take it more, it just isn't really convenient.

So as far as the 50 states we are the least used. Great.?

^^FWIW, the transit connection from Playhouse Square to Market Square is already pretty decent, given the very high frequency of 51/22/45 buses departing from Superior and 12th.

I think the challenge is that the Rapid was built to bring commuters in from the East and SW suburbs. Unlike other systems in the US, it was not designed to move passengers around the CBD. That's unfortunate because I think it could spur even more development.

@KJP is a better one to respond since he has the expertise, but I would love to see better CBD rail connectivity within the urban core. The Healthline was a start, but its linear. The challenge is who pays for it?

As a visitor these days, I find the Redline from CLE to downtown exceptionally convenient. It's a winner. Few cities have such easy public access from airport to CBD. Unfortunately it more or less ends there unless you take the trolleys.

Don't get your hopes up for a redevelopment of the Sunoco gas station at Lorain and West 44th when they tear the roof off of the building. They're just going to be putting a new roof on. A permit was submitted yesterday for the work.

They’ve started to do the brick work around Franklin Circle and it looks great.

That said, the construction crews are out here roughly once a week at this point and were gone for several weeks at another point. Does anyone know why there are so many work stoppages? It definitely feels like this project could be nearing completion by now...

As a side note, these bricks are very old and have some real historical value. The Massillon S&FB Co (stone and fire brick company) - which can be seen on the bricks in the photo - manufactured bricks in the early 1900s and distributed them across the Midwest. That makes this whole thing even cooler, IMO.

I don’t think it’s particularly irregular. Projects usually have an overall completion date and that’s the only contractual requirement. One small crew might be doing all the work along the corridor, or maybe it makes sense for the company to reallocate resources to another project for a time.

As long the the entire job is completed when required there is really nothing “wrong” although to the casual observer may seem abandoned.

Are you referring to just the circle and streets or the apartment bldg. too?  I'm there at least once a week and keep seeing a little progress on the streets each time. Meanwhile, they're putting in new intersection curbing westward from the circle.  Does anyone know id that series of roundabouts is still planned?  I think it's kinda dumb - uncalled for.

I was referring only to the Fulton Rd project (which includes the Franklin roundabout).

My understanding is that the mini-traffic circles along franklin are still planned but finding had not been secured so there is no timeline.

Originally there was an embedded Tweet in that post. I’m not sure what happened to the Tweet, but the tenant is a bank.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Thanks. Bank of America? I think one of the renderings out there had Bank of America signage above one of the retail spaces.

I find it strange that there's so much excitement for a bank!  If it were in the heart of Glenville or Kinsman, I'd get it, but not here.  Would expect excitement for a cool and needed retailer or a non-chain/franchised restaurant or cafe.

Yes, the tweet named Bank of America.

Does Bank of America have other retail branches in Cleveland or is their first one?

At the risk of turning this into another retail thread (please don't), I see a Bank of America sign on the right side and the pharmacy sign on the left sure looks like a Walgreen's Pharmacy logo hidden behind the trees. The Pearl Street florist looks like a generic name.

EDIT: Just asked Dan Whalen about it. He said Bank of America is signed. The others are placeholders.

Bank of America announced last year they are expanding to Ohio. The first Offices are in Columbus and Cincinnati. There are ATMs in at least Parma and Rocky River.

And downtown- they've got ATM's in the former part of Winking Lizard on Huron and Prospect. Pretty large signage presence, but yeah, just ATMs.

And currently looking on the BOA website, the closest locations that show up are in Detroit.

Is there something going on with Ohio banking laws? Neither B of A nor Wells Fargo have branches in Cleveland.

No loss here! Neither are desirable banks to me, but especially not Wells Fargo after they illegally opened all those accounts for their customers. If I had a Wells Fargo account after that, I would have closed it immediately and gave my money to another bank. I think the fact that they're still around is because people don't give a crap and have become so abused by large companies that they have become numb to when one does something incredulous. And anyone who was born, say, the past 20 years will have no idea that there's a better way to treat people and that, while this may be 'normal' business, it's not how it has to be or how it used to be.

Is this going to be a full service BoA branch? They have the ATM only locations they've been opening up in the region (downtown and a few on the east side), but I couldn't imagine them paying that kind of rent for a new build retail space just for ATMs.

I think they both have just gotten to be too big and with their 2009 acquisitions, they've only gotten worse instead of better.

It has to do with Federal banking laws. Not anything specific to Ohio, that is limiting their expansion in Ohio.

Cool to see that pic of "Bier Market" in Ohio City -  that little scene reminds me of a NYC neighborhood street scene - especially in the summer, with outside seating and life on the sidewalk.  Nice!

It seems like the Platform guys are looking to their next real estate play. This is kind of a smart use for these old buildings. I expect a similar layout to the Lakewood Truck Park.

The past few times I've gone by they repainted and for now have outdoor seating and whatnot. I'm sure it'll be interesting once it gets built out. Between this and Clark-Metro things, Platform/Inbev is really putting money into things (also if you're in the Phunkenship notice how all their kegs are Anheuser Busch now...)

Love the 1920s view, looking generally north. One of the few places were lost density has been substantially restored. Now about those streetcars....
