And a back on topic question -- in Ohio City does anyone know who purchased the Oblock Building on W 29th? We looked at that as a great building to renovate for a house but too much work. The sign is down -- what, if anything is it being rehabed to be?

I actually looked into this last week when I was checking some property transfers. If I remember correctly, it never sold.

I had that listing; the owner wound up moving his personal residence; and then decided to keep the building; it's a fantastic bldg but the issue with interested buyers was cost of rennovation. I still think it would make a fantastic restaurant.

Carole -- thanks!  I was curious.  We met you when we looked at the building.  Yes, it is a great building and would make a very nice restaurant or even a home.  just lots of $$$ to renovate.

Hi jmjr it's hard to know who anyone is for sure here LOL  yes I could be happy living there if I hit the lottery!

jmjr, I love that margaret mead quote; she may have been on to something!

Carole -- thanks.  I grew up with one bathroom -- that is where I learned that patience is a virtue.

The house in OC really would have been a dream just like all those Home & Garden TV dreams.  I do hope someone takes care of it.

so...why not put the Trader Joes meant for SYC in the Moda space? I first thought of this as a joke, and thought it was even worse b/c of Dave's being so close. But if you think of it, I think most people shop at TJ's for items they cannot find elsewhere. i have  never known anyone who does primary grocery shopping there. They usually have a few unique products they get elsewhere : a certain wine, odd ball nut mix, a cereal. From my guess of looking at other people's grocery choices at Dave's much of Dave's clientele may not even cross over to a TJ's.

As far as the WS Market, I think if anything it will bring more people in. The veggies and meat don't look any good at TJ's, and people may take the stroll on over since they are in the neighborhood. There is of course, the issue of a chain in OC...but we have the low brow  dollar store and subway and are managing. It could be called the Grocery District.

I'd rather see it in Detroit-Shoreway, for both strategic and personal reasons.  We're stuck in a grocery void, with our only walking option being the Save-a-Lot on Detroit & 58th.  We can drive west to Giant Eagle on Clifton or east to Dave's.  I won't try to pull any more attention from this thread to D-S, but that's my vote!

^selfish westerner.

He does have a point peabody lol. I love you guys :-)

You know, Cleveland can sustain more than one TJ!  One in Univ. Circle/Case, one downtown, and one westside (probably a bit more west than W.25th since it's pratically downtown).  Not to get way off track but I always thought a nice little grocery shop/more upscale convenient store would be a good fit for the vacant storefront in the Osborn bldg. at Prospect/Huron.  There are quite a few residences around here and it's too bad that workers/residents have to walk to Constantinos or Reserve Square.  Back to OC!!!

just a quick peek at the website and one can see detroit and portland have several.

One on Clifton on the sight of the Giant Eagle.

Wow, you nailed me.  I go there every couple months literally just to buy the thai lime chili peanuts and cashews.

Peabody, I think this is a great idea.  Some developers in Brooklyn are currently bringing in a TJs into an old bank building- something like his has precedent: http://www.brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2007/10/10_feet_for_tra.php

If not TJ, maybe another retailer who needs a lot of floor space.  Now just need to build like 10 more Fries and Schuele to juice up the density and spending money.

Mmmm .. thai lime chili peanuts. Never had them, but that sounds AMAZING.

50 ft. height restriction in a part of NYC?  I never would have guessed that.

LOL, at first when I saw Brooklyn, I thought you were referring to Brooklyn, Ohio!  I was like, "Brooklyn wants a TJ'S???"

What I would like to see from the City Master Plan is 'prayer' or 'hail mary' percentages of best useage mix. Meaning a certain percentage of services, retail, office, housing, entertainment, based on individual business districts. To me, this benchmark would help The City and CDC's and everyone in the neighborhood court the right kind of development. It just seems helter skelter to me at times.

And why not poll the neighborhood on what they'd like to see? Just like there is a TJ's focus to a lot of the OC discussion right now (pro and con lol), if the businesses and homeowners and renters were polled, there might be themes that arise specific to each neighborhood. Do we want a more vital mix and a vital economy and jobs? Then I think we need a better method of courting them in the neighborhoods. Am I on track or off base?

I think TJ would do well in OC even with Dave's and WSM. 1, Dave's offers a totally different atmosphere and selection of products than TJ's so I think that with the diversity that exists in and around Tremont/OC/Downtown, there wouldn't be a problem.  2, WSM doesn't cater to those who have 8-5 jobs except on Saturday and even then, having to wait for one day a week to buy something special doesn't always pan out.  The WSM will still continue to attract suburbanites on weekends and the spectacle of market alone should let it thrive.  It'd be cool if TJ teamed up and used some of the vendors' products to help eliminate the costs even more.  Now the Detroit Shoreway might even make a better candidate but OC is central to the hotter westside neighborhoods and downtown.  Even though there are a lot of proposed developments downtown, a Trader Joes can set up shop literally tomorrow while none of us really know if/when downtown's new neighborhoods will be ready to accomodate business.

Awesome!!

Does anyone know this building?

yes. It is a red brick building, and has the address in big letters on the front. I think it is a pretty neat looking place. This should be a great add to the area.

Too bad they couldn't take the Moda space.  The 2527 location looks kind of...isolated.

truthfully, for that type of venue it might be better. This way they can get wild and crazy and not tee off too many people.

Didnt antbody else go there when it was 2527?  I thought it was a great live music/martini bar and was sad when it closed last year.  I think it was a bit out of the way for many people in OC even though it wasnt far..

^^Maybe Hush should go there then.  Or, alternatively, the strip district.

Nah, this is of course good news.

Has anyone ever been to Sachsenheim Hall on Denison?  How does that fit into the west side music venue scene?

Hmm .. trying to find a pic of it on the internet. No luck, so far. Regardless, I'm excited about this. Cleveland, as the Rock Hall city, needs more rock venues, I think.

its next to the Nestle factory. Two story red brick house looking building with black trim.

has the address in big letters

So it says MMDXXVII on the front?  :-P

you know what I meant. :whip: In case no else did-NUMBERS

.

Hmm. Cool. I'm just trying to picture where it is on the streetscape.

Looks cool, though. Kinda reminds me of CBGB's with that awning.

lol@peabody

haha, it sounds like it's going to be an indie rock joint. Those kids will shuffle out of that place dejectedly, quiet like mice.

edit: Actually, does anyone know what it's like getting out of the Beachland at closing time? I imagine on the craziest nights, you'll hear some shouting and fulling around but nothing you wouldn't hear in any city on a Friday or Saturday night...

I was there a week and a half ago and it wasn't loud at all leaving, but the band I was there to see didn't draw a very wild crowd, so I imagine it's probably different based on who's playing.  I can't imagine it ever really getting out of control though, it's just not that kind of scene really.

i'll be curious how well this new place does.  if you can attract indie rock kids to parma hts,  < http://www.myspace.com/davenportbar  > then maybe it's a good business model.  i'm guessing the version in akron benefits a good bit from UA being so close.

what are folks thoughts on 'now that's class' in cudell?  i like their vegan offerings.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this venue has been vacant for three decades, as the Scene article stated.  I believe I was there about two years ago for an R&B show.  The place was packed and was actually in good shape.

The venue was still open  as recently as two years ago, if my brain is working right so I agree with you, Map Boy. Someday we can read news articles and say wow, every fact was correct LOL

Now That's Class literally IS bringing people from Parma. I think half the people in there were skaters from there, including-I think- the owner.  What a great hangout.

If they could only get the Centipede game back working.....

This is not indie rock. I mean, it is, but not the mopey kind I love.

I love the song on their myspace page, though.

I can't get the link to work. Where is this.?It looks familiar.

I thought that sadly died. It is back, or not?

i found this on your site mayday, i saw you didn't post it so i decided to. you updated it for projects for 2008. and this is a new project

My site? No, that's nowhere to be found on clevelandskyscrapers.com, aside from the fuzzy image used as a rendering.

That project (and rendering) *does* appear on the Cleveland compilation thread in the Projects and Construction thread on the skyscraperpage.com forum (owned and operated by Dylan LeBlanc from British Columbia), by virtue that I added it last March. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=97396

As you can see, it's under the "Proposed" section in that thread - the same place it's been since it was proposed in 2007.

Is it considered theft when you steal someone else's avatar?

I'm sure the housing market has had an effect on this project, as has the stalling of the West Shoreway conversion.

Ohio City Near West has a new director? I saw it in the PD but didn't take note, anybody have the name? (couldn't find it on cleveland.com)
