Wow, this is a night that has been long in the making.

West Side Market tower is fully illuminated. The clock faces, the exterior top, and the long tower.

Picture perfect and totally befitting such a wonderful landmark.

Didn't have any camera.

Btw, McNulty's pic...that was from this weekend when just the clock faces were lit.

Now it's everything, as I mentioned.

Wow, that must look amazing in person

That's pretty awesome. There is some great symbolism in the lighting up of the Market tower and the revitalization of the West 25th (and Ohio City) neighborhoods and the city as a whole.

That is a seriously fantastic local landmark.  Great to see it lit up so prominently.  Thanks for the photo o-jbw.

I lustily applaud this and all other lighting initiatives.  Looks great!

Yes, the right lighting can change everything.

Nice picture!

Havent heard anything lately about the MGB rooftop patio but it'll be a great addition to the street under the PNC wall sign.

My favorite pic from this walk...two of the fine Ohio City Ambassadors and a sign espousing the Market District as "prime"

My least favorite...Already?! C'mon guys the park isnt even open yet and the RTA shelters aren't a month old (I dont think that the OC Ambassadors abate RTA graffiti, that's up to RTA)

Nice to see all the OC foot traffic... I'm glad McNulty quickly stepped in to grab the Garage.  Hope it works out.  Kinda wish we'd have something different than another micro brewpub, but this sure beats the alternative (an empty store front).  Plus, McNulty's rep is golden.

^its going to be so different than Market Garden.  Its going to brew up some extremely crazy, tasty beers.  I honestly think it will be the "new"market garden.  Sam realized that his crowd in under a year went form chill, hipster, beer snobs to high heels, backwards hats, nightlife crowd...and i think he wants to cater to the other crowd with this place.  I dont think this place will be a "night on the town" type place.

I hear you, and I'm sure it's going to have it's own personality (diff from MGB or Bier Markt) and will greatly enhance the Market Square District... Someone earlier had mentioned they'd miss the edgy crowd the Garage attracted, and I understand that.  Diversity is the spice of urban life.

OK, folks.  Back on topic.

^ almost Hostel time!!

Was at the Ohio City Hostel the other day.  It is progressing nicely (about 75% completed).  I took these pictures from their roof top deck - Great view!

Thanks. That is a nice view!

That strip center's got to go

That strip center's got to go

AMEN!

That thing is public enemy number 1 in that area.  Hard to believe that thing was built with some fanfare and, I believe, some serious CDC support.  I guess we've come a long way.

That strip center's got to go

My first thought when I saw those pics. It truly is a fish out of water.

^ I think that was everyones first thought lol

It's got to go....after we get those parking lots behind the Market filled, and the ones in front of the hospital filled, and the vacant land around the rapid tracks as well.  Then I'll worry about the strip mall with the functioning businesses.

Strip mall: fingers crossed for an owner who's happy to make a little $ selling property for the greater good of the neighborhood... though in reality we all know they'll hold out for every last dime and daily a project for years.

Who exactly is in the market to buy it and develop it (at any price)?

I'd put the chances of the lots behind the Market being filled at close to 0%

That's too high.

Would MRN be the logical choice to re-development strip mall land? Or McNulty!

I don't really think anyone was in the market to demolish the retail portion of the Triangle and redevelop that either.  I think it's a very similar situation.  Would require a lot of public subsidy, developer buy-in and CDC participation, but I think its redevelopment would be a huge boon for Market Square as a core, transit-accessible commercial area.  A serious intersection reconfiguration wouldn't hurt either.

I always thought that a crucial element to that corner would be a real underground entrance to the rapid station. You could walk down a set of stairs, or two, on a few different sides of the intersection, and be led through a tunnel (at which time you may have to go back up some stairs, then down again) directly taking you into the covered station. These tunnels in other cities can be quite long, and its not that far but it gives the entire transit experience a much more integrated feel.

But, yes, this neighborhood could gain a lot from developing that lot better, and the entire intersection.

Except that the location of West 25th and Lorain is better. How many times have we seen a parking lot ignored for development when a perfectly viable structure a block or two closer to the action is razed? I'm not saying this will or will not happen here. I'm saying that we should expect to be surprised by the future. And that's the only prediction about the future I'm willing to make.

Ive always thought it would be cool to have direct access to the rapid on West 25th street as well.

Hopefully, the street light poles, which now are too close and obstruct the view of the Guardians in many cases, will be move for better viewing - or else the lighting of them won't matter.

Hope this is the right place for this:

YES!  Finally!  I'm so excited for this, especially lighting up the Guardians of Traffic

Although frequently called the "Guardians of Traffic," isn't the correct name "Guardians of Transportation?"  Each Guardian holds a different mode of transportation: covered wagon, several kinds of trucks, automobile, etc.

Also glad to see the Guardians lit at night, well in advance of the World Congress on Art Deco in 2017...held in Cleveland, of course.

Decophiles from around the world will go nuts for the Guardians--and the logo for the 2017 Congress will probably feature a Guardian as well.

And Cuyahoga County Engineer Albert Porter (served 1943-1976) wanted them demolished to add lanes to the bridge which weren't needed. The soulless man told the Plain Dealer in 1975:

"Those columns are monstrosities and should be torn down and forgotten. There is nothing particularly historic about any one of them. We're not running a May Show here."

That's unbelievable.

About everything that dickhead said or did was unbelievable in a bad way.

I love the Lorain-Carneigie bridge and I love the detail of the structures...when were those built though?

Well the bridge opened in 1932.  Of course Im sure everybody on here already know this, but for any newbies that may not, it was renamed the "Hope" Memorial after being closed in the early 80's for repairs.  This  was because Bob Hopes father was a stonemason on the bridge.  I would hope along with the new pedestrian amenities that it would also include some sort of historical marker explaining this (if there isnt already something indicating this).  This is an area where Cleveland really seems to fall short.

"The bridge was renamed at this time, becoming the Hope Memorial Bridge, to honor actor Bob Hope and his family - English immigrants who came to Cleveland in 1908. William Henry Hope, Bob's father, was a stonemason who worked on the construction of the Guardians in the 1930s."

^ i cant wait for that place to open.  The freaky beer that will be served there sounds incredible

I'm totally psyched.  I love narrative behind this place too, that someone upthread described:  McNulty wants to have a place for beer nerds, so once MGB got too popular/mainstream, he had to open something more esoteric?  Even if an exaggeration, it's just awesome he's on such a mission.

^I think that is accurate.  Sam is a pretty chill guy from what i have seen/heard of him.  His rant about the Barley House tells me he doesnt like high heels, dressed up crowd.  He likes chill people that like good beer.  Im sure he wont complain about the revenues at MGB, but he is seeing opportunity to cater to the beer snobs and a more relaxed atmospehere and i think thats what he wants out of Nano Brew.
