We need more local business owners and leaders like Mr. McNulty.  Features such as park lets, bike corrals, beer bikes (whatever happened to that), etc are some of the small things that make vibrant cities interesting and different.

I was at a party in Rocky River last weekend & Sam McNulty showed up on his bicycle

^HA Sam is a character and i dont even know him.  I saw him sun bathing in Dogbone park (along detroit near Harp) in nothing but high cutoff jean shorts.  Gotta have more Sams around here.

What "status" do you want to know about the house?

^ In an attempt to not derail this thread too far into the mysteries of foreclosure/tax I'll start a new one off in the appropriate section.

Cleveland's West Side Market guide: Where to shop, how it works and what it's meant to our city

The Plain Dealer joins in the celebration of the West Side Market's 100 years. This guide includes stories from the photo-filled special section in the newspaper as well as exclusive online content and some highlights of our previous reporting.

For a century, it's been the place to go.

Men and women of Cleveland: If you are heading to market, to market, to buy a fat pig, the place to go for the past 100 years has been the city-owned West Side Market at West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue.

Had a lovely/great Market/Ohio City Saturday, esp with dinner at wonderful SoHo on their new patio and desert/coffee at Flying Fig ... and a late night brew at Market Garden after an afternoon/eve of strolling around bustling Ohio City... One downer, though, was the fact Market Square park was still incomplete and fenced in and not ready for Memorial Day, the kickoff of summer and the annual summer street fairs.  It seems they're taking forever to get this park finished esp when the heavy work appears to have been created weeks ago.... It looks all but finished... Seems like there was a lost opportunity to have the park finished on such an important and busy weekend for Ohio City.

Right or wrong, I believe the plan is to unveil the new plaza to the public, next weekend, which is the first round of events / festivities for WSM's Centennial Celebration.

The muralist is still working on the mural.

Awesome!  I was wondering just yesterday if this thing was underway. One does wonder what's in store for that minty green house...  One thing that I couldn't figure out from earlier descriptions of the project is the parking plan.  Anyone know?

I don't know why I think this, and I could be totally wrong, but I thought that the green house went with this and that it would be incorporated into the project. Although, it definitely looks like it caught fire... so maybe it will be demolished?

Depending on how much space the addition in the back takes up, I would think that the rest of the available space back there is for parking?

Is there a target for an opening date?

Did they try putting out the fire by using the ugliest green paint they could find?? :-P

Ha ha! And note that not even a fire could kill that ivy.

If I found the correct property info, this house has been owned by a Beverly Jane Jimenez since 1981. And it's not listed for sale. Barring pending transfer, that makes me think that whatever happens to this house is not linked to the Transformer ... At least not yet.

I  cant imagine that green staying on either structure in the near future.

The house is just too much...it's not so bad on the Station. Still, I think they'll nix the green. I guess we'll soon find out.

Is there a target for an opening date?

I dont know of any date

This really doesn't need to be said given Clueless's awesome photos, but the brickwork on the transformer building is really stunning. I hadn't quite appreciated that before these photos.

Thanks, Strap!

An update in the Market District area of OC...plastic has gone up on the windows in the former Ohio City Blooms space and workers were going in and out yesterday.

Last account I heard was to convert it to the bar-restaurant "Town Hall" by Fabio Salerno and others. I remember reading the dollar amount at 1 million.  Maybe someone knows if the information has changed, if it indeed has...

New park is open!

Re-opening of renovated Market Square Park opens West Side Market's centennial celebration

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Keeping fresh for 100 years is something to celebrate. Cleveland started on Saturday with an outdoor party opening the centennial celebration of the West Side Market.

"This is just another example of how the city of Cleveland invests in our neighborhoods," Mayor Frank Jackson said. "We're positioning Cleveland for the future. This is symbolic of what we want to do for every neighborhood."

Councilman Joe Cimperman called the market "the only address in Cleveland that has a million families that call it home." He said the park was "always intended to be its outdoor dining room."

Helping to make that point, a diverse crowd of about 500 sampled free ice cream from Mitchell's Homemade and soft pretzels from Sterle's Country House, while an array of ethnic dancers and musicians provided entertainment that climaxed with fireworks at nightfall.

Does anyone know if the Ohio City Farm Stand is operational yet this year?  If so, anyone know its hours?  The web site is not forthcoming with this sort of info: http://www.ohiocityfarm.com/farmstand.html

The renovated Mkt Sq park looked nice -- NOTE: I have only seen it fenced-in, not since its grand reopening.  Frankly,  though, I'm kinda surprised the City spent the time and money to revise a park that some of us were happy with -- I liked the different levels and the outdoor (IIRC) children's art of the old park -- which I understand is retained in some form.  I know the old one did get a little dirty at times and there was some problem with homeless and bums (2 distinct groups as I see it).  Hopefully the new presence of the OC Ambassadors will help stem these problems in the new park.

I think it might be a little different when the trees mature in a couple years. But, yes, the previous park had a well-worn feel to it...i wish they would've kept a couple of the older trees but I like this new park.

No I do not know if it is. I've only driven past it in the later afternoon/evening recently so possibly it was open earlier in the day? Or, maybe it opens when the Open Air in Market Square starts up (June 23)??

I can't imagine anything has been harvested from the farm yet.

Strawberries should be geting really close (well-known Kirtland Strawberry fest is just 2 weeks away)

Maybe not enough to open the stand though?

I stopped by and purchased a few items at the Ohio City Farm Stand. They had four different types of lettuce, two types of radishes and I want to say chives but that was about it. I have no idea what their hours are.

^Thanks!  Any chance you stopped by on a Saturday?

modern hostel to cater to travelers who aim to experience cleveland rather than simply visit it

Erin O'Brien | Thursday, June 07, 2012

As the West Side Market prepares to celebrate its 100th birthday, a brand new entity is sprouting just one block south of the venerable food hall. The Cleveland Hostel, which is scheduled to open later this month, will be the area's only modern hostel catering to travelers who aim to experience American cities rather than simply visit them.

The hostel, which is currently taking shape in the space adjacent to Campbell's Sweets Factory, will boast 60 beds, a fully equipped kitchen, bike rental and a spectacular rooftop patio. Prices per night start as low as $20. The project's founder, Mark Raymond, will act as proprietor and full-time resident.

With a master's degree in urban planning, Raymond has traveled and hostelled for more than 10 years, visiting some 70 countries. In 2010, after a stint working at a ski resort in Alta, Utah, Raymond returned to Cleveland with his idea. The hostel will ironically -- and, perhaps, poetically -- connect Raymond's passion for wanderlust with his hometown, thus enabling him to showcase Cleveland via a unique, affordable venue.

rising star coffee roasters now open in ohio city firehouse

Thursday, June 07, 2012

Kim Jenkins of Rising Star Coffee traded his job overseeing 110 scientists and engineers at Lockheed Martin in Florida to move to Spencer, Ohio, and launch a new coffee roaster in Cleveland.

Given his background in driving technological innovation, it comes as no surprise that his approach to roasting the best possible coffee beans is, well, innovative.

"Specialty grade coffee is the top half to one percent of coffee beans on the market, and that's all we do," says Jenkins, who recently set up shop in the Ohio City Firehouse building on W. 29th Street. "Coffee is the second largest commodity trade after crude oil, and there's plenty of room for growth in Northeast Ohio."

Jenkins' plan is to sell beans wholesale while also marketing to individual consumers and selling coffee by the cup. He's capitalizing on rising consumer interest in the highest-grade coffee, he says. His model appears to be working, as his fledgling company is gaining at least one wholesale customer per week. (The retail operation is still in the works.)

Found this very interesting:

"The typical route for a European traveler is to hit New York, then go across New York State via Buffalo and Niagara Falls," explains Hamilton. "Then they swing down and go to Chicago. Cleveland is right on that path and [Raymond] should pick up a good deal of that traffic."

Personally, I've never stayed in (or even visited) a hostel, but a good friend has hosteled across Europe.... and loved it.  The concept sounds cool, and I'm esp glad to see that old building put to such good use.

I stayed in a hostel in Denver. It's true if you want to experience the city stay in a hostel; otherwise you're sitting in a communal bedroom with six strangers.

The West Side Market and the newly modernized park across the street were very busy yesterday thanks to a nice hot day and a good band playing at the park. I didn't catch the name of the band, but I hope they return. I believe there's a band every Saturday in the summer months, along with the sidewalk vendors, artists, etc. The mural is a nice new touch, too....

I'm amazed how many regulars don't know about the balcony! My friends from Youngstown are frequent visitors to the market but did not know there was a balcony and with places to sit to watch the "floor show." BTW, note the year-dated photographs from years past at the market, posted above the vendors stalls. They're an addition for this year's 100th anniversary of the current market building (the previous West Side Market was across the street where the park is now, from 1840-1912). Of course this is only one-third of the indoor market (not including the produce area outside)...

Great pictures.

And I really like the long banner that hangs on 2 sides of the tower.

Same here. Looks really nice.

I agree; the banner is both vital but understated, ... unlike that ugly (thankfully gone) "FREE" placard (or placards) that defaced our beautiful Art Museum during/after it's renovation....

... We passed through the WSM/Ohio City on Sat at around the peak period (11:30a-12:30p).  It was a gorgeous day and WSM + the streets around it were jammed with beautiful cross-section of happy people.  The Market Sq. bazaar and live band were jumping with activity as well (KJP's photos capture it pretty well, although it seemed considerably more crowded when we were there).  Any tourist from anywhere in the world couldn't NOT be impressed with this uber special place.

Lots of bustle around town today, including Ohio City.  So nice to see! Assorted pictures today, was my first time seeing the new park.  Came out nice, good to see people taking advantage of it!

I am rarely satisfied with my crowd shots, as they never seem to adequately capture the energy I feel when I'm in a crowd. My pictures from Saturday didn't do the crowds justice either, and I was there after the noontime "rush hour."

Looks good. I havent had a chance to check it out yet, so thanks for the pictures!

^ any idea when the rooftop beer garden opens?

I asked Sam about this a month ago, he said it would be open "soon" but no date had been set.

Ordinance No. 275-12(Ward 3/Councilmember Cimperman): Changing the Use District of land located on the southeast corner of Bridge Avenue and West 30th Street from Two Family to Local Retail (for Heck’s expansion).

I dont know where the expansion would be unless they demolish that house over there, which I hope isnt the case.

The plan presented at a community meeting was for Hecks to restore the 1860s house adjacent to the restaurant with a new addition toward the rear of the property linking the two structures. I was pleased to see that a restoration of the house was part of the plan as I have heard it is in very poor condition.

At a more recent meeting that I could not attend, plans for the Jay Hotel were on the agenda. Does anyone know what the plan is? It would be nice if someone at OCI or the councilman's office could send out a brief summary of the meetings for concerned citizens that cannot attend every meeting.

I havent seen the forumer Ohio City post for a while, so I dont know if they will respond to this...but the window replacement above the Something Different gallery is a plain ol' boring glass window. Plywood was there for several months before that...and now nothing much.

The original transom is ostensibly gone? Very unfortunate. It is little things like this that take away from the charm of W. 25th St.

I guess I'll go into the gallery sometime soon and ask someone there how this all transpired.

The transom from Something different gallery, was unstable and needed to be taken down to be repaired and restored. It will return but we don't yet have a date as to when it will be reinstalled.

Does anybody know the whereabouts of the beveled glass top window at Something Different gallery in the Market District?

It was removed several weeks ago
