The Akron-Canton Airport, undergoing a $100 million expansion, is seeking another construction project that would begin in 2007, airport officials said Tuesday.

 

Plans under discussion call for three gates to be added to the south end of the airport, which already has eight gates and could grow to 11 with the current expansion. The new plans are preliminary and still have to go through the design and approval process, said assistant airport director Rick McQueen...

When the first Frontier Airlines flight from Akron-Canton Airport takes off this afternoon for Denver, it will mark another leap for an airport whose recent growth seems to know few bounds.

 

Airport officials have been meeting with architects in recent days to discuss a new expansion project that would add even more room to the airport, which is still undergoing a $100 million expansion launched in 2001...

AirTran, CAK come up aces with direct flights to Vegas

Airline, airport celebrate service with casino party

AirTran Airways and Akron-Canton Airport celebrated the debut of nonstop service to Las Vegas with a casino party on Thursday.  AirTran will offer the nonstop flight five days a week (no service on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).  For the inaugural sold-out flight, airport employees became poker dealers and party hosts while passengers waited at the gate, beginning at 5:30 a.m.

 

Once AirTran announced its flight to Las Vegas, Continental Airlines lowered its Cleveland-to-Las Vegas fares to match.  The same thing happened when AirTran began flying from Akron-Canton to Denver in June.  Continental's round-trip ticket to Las Vegas from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is about $218.  The same ticket will be about $20 more from Akron-Canton with AirTran.

Akron-Canton Airport Breaks Monthly Passenger Record

Airport Traffic Up 6 Percent From 2004

GREEN, Ohio -- For the second consecutive month, Akron-Canton Airport posted a new single-month record for passengers, transporting more than 144,000 travelers in July, NewsChannel5 reported.

 

The mark topped June’s total of 133,00 travelers, the airport’s previous passenger record.

 

The airport logged 820,000 passengers in the first six months of this year, a 6 percent increase from 2004.

congrats to CAK.... I can't wait till Youngstown announces the deals with the 2 airlines they are in talks with. I do know where they'd go and they'd bring BIG TIME Competition to CAK-CLE-PIT etc. The one carrier is a newer carrier which goes to smaller cities out of its big hub and the other one; well the name says all and so does whoooo?

AirTran Airways and Akron-Canton Airport today will announce nonstop service to Fort Myers, Fla.  This is the third nonstop destination from Akron-Canton that the Atlanta-based airline has announced this year.  It inaugurated direct service to Las Vegas in August.  The Fort Myers connection was frequently requested by Northeast Ohioans, according to sources at the airport.  The service will be seasonal, running from January until May each year.

 

The 150-minute flight is to depart Akron each day at 9.  Flights from Florida are to leave there at 6:25 p.m. With the Fort Myers flights, AirTran will have eight nonstop flights from Akron-Canton Airport.  The airport is staking its future - and expanding its customer base - on the wings of low-cost air carriers.  The airport to the south has marketed itself as an alternative to the much larger Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.  But Akron-Canton officials insist that they are creating new fliers and not taking away business from Cleveland.

Officials celebrate expansion, keep next growth spurt in mind

Even as Akron-Canton Airport officials celebrated a milestone in a $60 million expansion Thursday, planners are anticipating the next big growth spurt.  The building structure involved in the terminal's expansion has largely been completed, officials said, and the project is on target.  Completion is expected early next summer.

 

The terminal was designed to make it easy to add gates and place facilities like restrooms and ticket counters in places where they would not need to be moved in future expansions, said Jordan Taylor, principal architect for HNTB Architecture of Washington.  The airport has seen phenomenal growth in recent years, ranking as the second-fastest growing airport from 2001 to 2004.

Akron-Canton Airport is in the midst of a multimillion-dollar expansion that began in 2001 and is to be completed in about a year. At the end of the project, the airport will have:

AKRON-CANTON AIRPORT ACHIEVES FOURTH CONSECUTIVE ANNUAL PASSENGER RECORD

 

Green, OH: 2005 was another for the record books at Akron-Canton Airport (CAK). Nearly 1.45 million passengers traveled to/ from the airport compared to 1.35 million the year before, a 5.6 percent increase. New flights offered by AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines fueled the passenger growth at CAK. According to US Department of Transportation statistics, Akron-Canton was the second fastest growing airport in the nation from 2001-2004, increasing capacity (as measured by increased seats) by more than 100 percent. That growth is largely attributable to the expansion of low fare flights offered by industry juggernaut AirTran Airways at CAK.

“It was another great year at Akron-Canton Airport,” said director Fred Krum. “More northeastern Ohio travelers have discovered our great airline service, low fares, shorter lines and a better overall airport experience. We aren’t resting on our laurels though; Akron-Canton is committed to adding new amenities in 2006 that will keep passengers coming back.”

During 2005 Frontier Airlines commenced affordably priced, nonstop service to Denver aboard big, comfy Airbus jets with satellite TV in every seatback, with excellent single concourse connections to the west. Additionally, AirTran Airways added flights to Las Vegas aboard their brand new Boeing 737 aircraft and announced seasonal service to Ft. Myers, Florida (which commenced January 12, 2006).

In 2006 the airport will dedicate the new gate concourse, add new food service options and will launch a new website. The airport is currently in the final phase of the $60 million, five-year STAR expansion project. The first two phases included longer runways, a new baggage claim wing and additional car parking.   It's not mentioned in the article, but Akron-Canton has now passed Dayton International in total passengers by about 250,000 for the year based upon an article posted here a few days ago listing Dayton's amount of passengers through 11 months and their estimated December numbers.

 

  Also, maybe Akron-Canton's continued growth (they're already talking about another expansion even though the current one isn't finished) and increased competitiveness that continues to eat into Cleveland Hopkins ridership will convince Cleveland officials that they can't wait until the 20 year deal they gave the I-X Center to remain open (unless Cleveland builds a new convention center earlier) is up to upgrade and expand their airport.

 

  One of the key things Frank Jackson needs to do in his term is get a deal finalized and get construction underway for a new convention center downtown, so that the space that the I-X center occupies can be used for expanded runways and new terminals (plus the demolishing of the houses of people in Brook Park that were stupid enough to buy houses next to a pre-existing major airport.) Then Hopkins can get the long talked about direct international flights that will be key to Northeast Ohio's economic future.

It must be because Harry and David is so close.

The most ambitious capital improvement project in the history of the Akron-Canton Regional Airport is entering the home stretch.  The $25 million terminal expansion featuring a glass atrium and two ground level and four second level passenger loading gates is about 70 percent complete, according to Rick McQueen, the airport’s assistant director.  The terminal project represents the final piece in the airport’s five-year improvement program.

 

Since the estimated $70 million program was unveiled in 2001, the airport’s north-south runway has been extended, a new baggage claim wing/food court has been constructed and hundreds of parking spaces have been added.  Once the 60,000-square-foot terminal is completed, the airport will be capable of handling up to 2.5 million passengers a year, McQueen said.  About 1.4 million travelers passed through the airport’s gates last year.

Fast-growing Akron-Canton unveils new gateway, atrium

Airport Director Fred Krum wants to be at the Akron-Canton Airport on Monday night when those first passengers leave their airplane and enter the airport's newest crown jewel.  Instead of the outdated ground-floor gate area originally built in the 1960s, the AirTran Airways passengers will enter the second floor of a new concourse with terrazzo floors, bamboo and stainless steel finishes and state-of-the art information screens.  Indeed, they will see a new gateway to the Akron-Canton region.  They will see a $26 million, 38,000-square-foot concourse and atrium.

 

Future projects of the Akron-Canton Airport

 

- Demolition of the area with existing gates 7, 8 and 9 next month.

 

- A $70 million extension of the longest runway to 8,200 feet from 7,600 feet and the addition of updated runway safety areas. Airport Director Fred Krum said the five-year airport extension project will pave the way to allowing all planes to take off to a West Coast destination.

 

- Demolition of the remaining gates in the original terminal in 2009. A new $24 million area with three gates and a one-level atrium will be added onto the new concourse.

For the most part this is a good thing. The Akron - Canton area has been underserved for some time now, and as Stark county  quickly develops we will find people using this Airport even more. Not to mention there haven't been any fatal shootings there in recent times...

I'm not sure I see Stark county quickly developing.  Timken, Hoover, Diebold are the main companies of Stark co.  I don't see any "growing" or developing.  I'm actually curious if you think there is growth in Stark.  I haven't seen it, but then all i know thats growing in Stark is the traffic around Belden.  I don't think you mean new houses in Jackson.  Hope you don't mean a casino in Massillon.  Just curious.  Welcome to UO.

The population of Stark isn't growing, just the amount of strip malls and fast food joints that service them.  Jackson Twp and such are growing while Canton, Massilon and Akron shrink.  The population is stagnant.  Probably the main growing business for CAK is baby boomer snowbirds going to Florida or Las Vegas or going to visit their kids that have moved away and vice versa.  Hence...Frontier probably saw a niche of Ohio transplants living in Denver and points West and thought there was enough leisure/holiday business to warrant the service.  Business travel wise....those companies in Stark and Summit frequently bring in contractors for short/long term projects instead of hiring full time workers.  I have a (surpisingly) large number of contractor friends that have been to parts of NE Ohio for that reason.

okay let me clarify, by develop I meant sprawl. But I don't like to use the word when I don't have to. :)

ah. That sucks..  I was hoping you were going to blow me away with all sorts of Stark co. developments.  As Summit co. keeps slowly chugging along that will help Stark and neighboring counties around Summit grow as well.  The airport definitely helps enhance this and keep the momentum going.

CANTON Filling four dump trucks a minute every day for the next three months still won’t be enough dirt for the Akron-Canton Regional Airport to extend its main runway.  Airport Director Fred Krum told Stark County commissioners Tuesday that the Federal Aviation Administration requires airports to have a 1,000-foot buffer beyond the end of a runway in case pilots can’t stop within the regular distance.

 

“Even though the odds are incredibly small for that to happen, they want to add 1,000 feet for safety,” Krum said.  The end of Akron-Canton’s 7,600-foot runway has a 60-foot drop.  The airport in Green needs 4 million cubic yards of dirt — enough to fill four pro football stadiums to the top — to add to the buffer zone and to lengthen it by 600 feet.

GREEN - AirTran Airways. The low-cost carrier is the difference between a lot of regional airports and Akron-Canton Regional Airport, says Director Fred Krum. Because of AirTran’s low prices and available destinations, Akron-Canton isn’t seeing the loss of passengers and flights that Toledo Express Airport and a lot of other regionals are struggling with.

 

Krum grabs an AirTran airlines replica from his desk. “We have that horse. Toledo doesn’t have that horse.”  When AirTran comes to an airport and expands, it’s a good sign, because it forces the competition to lower prices, and keeps the competition from dropping flights.  AirTran began boom times at Akron-Canton by adding flights to New York, and following with Boston and a host of destinations in Florida.

This looks like a flight for the leisure crowd.  based on those departure times. IIRC, there are 11/12 flights a day to the MIA/FLL/PBI airports from Cleveland.  I don't see the benefit.

Well, yeah, it does cater primarily to the leisure crowd, it's Ft. Lauderdale. And 11-12 nonstop flights to MIA/FLL/PBI from CLE? Not even during the high season. American Eagle sends two RJs a day down to MIA, and Continental does MIA/FLL/PBI each 1x daily for the month of October. During the high season, frequencies change to match peaks during the week, with FLL bumped up to 3x daily, and MIA and PBI go from RJs to 737s, though PBI has 2 frequencies on Sundays with RJs. 

 

And the benefit is explained in the articles in previous posts. AirTran has built a solid niche at CAK by providing low fares and full service from a convenient airport (both in terms of location and ease of use). The FLL service is a natural progression towards the airline's continued expansion.

It's nice to know that Cleveland metro has 2 full-service airports on the map. One of many reasons I see the population growing in years to come, as opposed to shrinking.

More people are using Akron-Canton Airport through the first nine months of this year than did last year.  According to the latest statistics provided by the airport, passenger travel was up 2.6 percent despite a reduction in daily flights from 45 to 38.  So far in 2006, 1,103,795 passengers used the airport compared with 1,075,781 in the same period last year.

 

Overall airport operations -- takeoffs and landings -- were down 3.16 percent because of fuel cutbacks, airlines cutting service, such as Las Vegas flights, limited charter flights and reductions in seasonal service, such as flights to Fort Myers, Fla.

Airport spreads wings at 60

Akron-Canton officials celebrate completion of its new concourse

The Akron-Canton Airport celebrated 60 years of operation Friday as county and state leaders honored the past and looked to the future. Officials also introduced a new $60 million concourse, ending a five-year project.  The concourse was built with the expectation of increased traffic, which has tripled in the last decade. The improvements include spacious gates, a skylight, additional escalators, new flooring and large restrooms.

 

The new area has two gates in the north commuter concourse, where United Express operates its Chicago service. Northwest will begin operating from the north concourse and AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines operate from the second-level south gate concourse. Arby's and Great Lakes Brewing Co. opened for business two weeks ago on that level.  Delta and U.S. Airways will continue to operate from existing gates until the next phase of construction is complete in three years.

Hotels booming in Green

Mike Kitzi, chief engineer at the Hilton Garden Inn near the Akron-Canton Regional Airport, turns on a lamp in one of the suites. The hotel, which opened last month, has 121 rooms.  On the surface, it looks like there's a hotel gold rush here.  Last week, the 121-room Hilton Garden Inn opened near the Akron-Canton Airport. Two more hotels are scheduled to open within 10 months: A 108-room Cambria Suites Hotel on Thorn Drive off Massillon Road and a 92-room Holiday Inn Express next to the Hampton Inn near Arlington Road.

 

An 87-room Springhill Suites also has been approved near Arlington Road.  But that may bring 291 new rooms rather than 408: The Holiday Inn Express will replace the Days Inn for a net gain of 62 rooms, and Springhill Suites has not broken ground nearly a year after getting planning approval.

Nonstops to Vegas to return

AirTran Airways will resume nonstop flights from Akron-Canton Regional Airport to Las Vegas in August.  The company said Wednesday it would resume the flights it stopped in May 2006 because of the cost of fuel.  "They promised they would bring it back when fuel settled a bit," said Airport Director Fred Krum.  "It has, but it's still high."

 

AirTran will leave here at 11:43 a.m. and arrive at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas at 12:53 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.  Return flights will leave at 2:55 p.m. and arrive at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. AirTran began the five-day-a-week flights in August 2005, then cut back about six months later.  In February, the company announced the flights would stop.

Akron-Canton Airport puts heat on Hopkins

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport must be feeling the heat.  It negotiated an agreement with Clear Channel Outdoor to outlaw Akron-Canton Airport billboards within a mile of Hopkins airport.  It launched a new logo and ad campaign about a year after Akron's catchy punching-bag clown commercials took off.  And in September, Continental Airlines President Jeff Smisek -- in a serious threat passed off as a funny comment -- told business leaders to fly from the airline's Hopkins hub, warning, "Don't drive to Akron-Canton!"

 

Why?  Hopkins officials won't talk about it, but the little airport is making big inroads.  Akron-Canton Airport has celebrated five record-breaking years of growth since 2001, with passenger traffic increasing from 789,607 in 2000 to 1.4 million in 2006, an 82 percent increase. That made it the second-fastest-growing airport in the country for that period, behind Long Beach, Calif.

Officials at Akron-Canton Airport, which has enjoyed a doubling in traffic in the last 10 years, will unveil a $110 million, 10-year capital plan next week to an annual meeting of architects and engineers.  Nearing completion of $60 million in improvements begun in 2001, airport officials said they will travel to Westlake on March 12 to the Cleveland Engineering Society's 56th Design & Construction Conference to reveal their plans for the next decade.

kjp if you see this --- or anyone who knows --- how close is the cvsr to the airport? i would really like to see the airport linked up to it someday just as much as i would for the train to come up into downtown cleveland.

 

i've used the akron-canton airport a few times, what an absolute pleasure. how often do you say that about airports?!?! i'm not surprized it's star is rising.

CVSR actually runs very close to both Akron airports.  From Peninsula the railway follows the Merriman Valley, then treks east under the Y-bridge just north of downtown, then under Route 8 and past the Goodyear HQ.  From there it turns south and runs within a few feet of the western end of the runway at Fulton Airport before continuing south toward Green.  The rail line then runs on the east side of I-77 right across from the Akron-Canton airport, continuing past the warehouses of North Canton before again paralleling I-77 past the Hall of Fame and then to the western edge of downtown Canton.

 

I love to use the Akron-Canton airport too - parking is dirt cheap and close to the terminal.  Downside - no Great Lakes beer!

I backtracked from their Canton station.  It goes right by the airport but on the other side of I-77.  Theoretically it would be easy to put in a little station there and have people dropped off by the airport parking lot buses.  The hard part would be working with CVSR, Metro, Sarta to decide whether that makes economic sense.  CVSR might have to drop their S.  And significantly change their purpose and culture..  Maybe just give up that section of track to a Metro/Sarta entity.

 

This is definitely something that should be looked at and studied.  It makes sense that none of those organizations are going to consider it on their own.  It will have to be the airport that pushes them.  What could be better for a regional airport than to have instant access to 2 downtown cities.  Just an overlooked asset waiting to be re-used...  The city mayors will both be interested in having increased traffic downtown. 

 

It probably makes sense having commuter rail going in between Akron and Canton anyways by the amount of traffic going both ways on 77. Great idea mrnyc!

Guess I haven't flown from there since the terminal renovation.  I see parking is up to $7 a day now too (it used to be $20 a week for economy parking when I lived in Canton five years ago)

 

It would be a major plus for CAK to have rail service into Akron and continuing up to the Cleve.  A "downtown" station could be at North Main under the All-American Bridge, with bus/trolley running up and down Main, with an "east Akron" station near Market and Exchange serving UA and the Goodyear HQ.  With all the professionals that live in Merriman Valley, a station at Portage Path for commuting into downtown Akron could work as well.

 

Not sure how viable service to downtown Canton would be, but a Belden Village station could be a stimulus for redevelopment of the area around Whipple and Everhard Roads where a dingy mostly vacant strip mall currently sits between Gabriel Brothers and the hotels on the hill.

It would be neat if the area utilized trains as a part of transport to the airport. Riding a train there and back to a station close to my house in Akron would save me money. I wouldnt have to spend a per day fee for my car to sit in a parking lot cuz it will be sitting in my driveway for free..

The Akron-Canton Airport will undertake 10 projects in 10 years as part of a new $110 million capital improvement plan. 

The projects include a major runway extension and a border patrol facility that will accommodate international flights.  Airport officials unveiled the long-term plan at the Cleveland Engineering Society's 56th Design & Construction Conference Wednesday in Westlake.

May I ask why? CAK does compete with Hopkins, but mostly it pulls from the 1.1 million that Live in the Akron-Canton area. It doesnt have a huge selection of flights, but it serves its purpose.

Turbulent times for airlines don't slow expansion at Akron-Canton Airport

There is little question that the airline industry faces turbulent times.  Three airline carriers in two weeks have shut down. The price of jet fuel and oil have skyrocketed, cutting into airline profits.  Passengers are being hit with additional fees for checking in two pieces of luggage.  They're also being charged for peanuts.  And aircraft from various carriers have been grounded because of maintenance and safety issues, forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights and stranding fliers.

 

Yet, the Akron-Canton Airport is expanding.  It's injecting $110 million into its 10-year expansion project based on projections of growth in the industry.  "That raised an eyebrow when I read it," Regional Airline Association President Roger Cohen said.  "The industry is obviously going through a real rough patch.

i dont think cak hurts hopkins so much. i dont think burke does either. times are changing fast with the airlines, but all 3 airports still have different offerings.

 

when i kept searching and getting tix for a visit home for the end of this month (for nyc/lga - hopkins) and they kept coming in at a ridiculous $338-$368rt on my usual airline - continental - among others.....and the standard $168rt rate was available on airtran, guess which one i chose?

 

so it's great to have cak in the region as an option.

 

^ Well put, I fly Airtran to Cleveland because it's cheap, easy to get in and out of, and it's a nice airport overall.
