This morning's 11:30 a.m. flight departing Akron-Canton Airport for Atlanta won't be like every other day's flights.

 

The AirTran Boeing 737 will be the first to take off from a new and improved runway.

 

Passengers might wonder why there will be politicians and airport officials on the nearby tarmac celebrating and watching.

Today, Southwest Airlines confirmed that they will maintain a schedule at CAK post integration with Airtran...

 

 

That's good news.  That option sometimes saves me a lot of money.

 

I'm not sure why CLE is almost always more expensive than every other surrounding airport.

AirTran to convert to Southwest Airlines operations at Akron-Canton Airport

Akron-Canton Airport is among 22 airports nationwide that made the cut and will convert AirTran Airways operations to Southwest Airlines operations as the two carriers fully merge their services.

 

The announcement today by Dallas-based Southwest was greeted enthusiastically by Kristie Van Auken, Akron-Canton's senior vice president and chief marketing and communications officer.

 

“We're thrilled. And that might be an understatement,” she said. “This is a great day for us.”

Southwest Airlines to begin service out of Akron-Canton Airport

Southwest Airlines plans to begin flying a few times a day out of Akron-Canton Airport, where its AirTran Airways subsidiary already is the largest carrier.

 

Southwest announced that it will start flying out of Akron-Canton and Dayton International Airport Aug. 12. Southwest's schedule at Akron-Canton will offer two daily roundtrip flights to Southwest's sizable operation at Chicago Midway and also to Denver, with one daily roundtrip flight.

 

Southwest said its service in both the Akron-Canton and Dayton markets will complement AirTran's existing service in those cities. Southwest said AirTran's service will continue, with the airlines jointly determining the best time to convert all AirTran's flights to Southwest. Southwest acquired AirTran last May.

AirTran is down 10% YoY January. It looks like a lot of the folks that abandoned Hopkins for the cheaper fares out CAK are returning to CLE. So, at this time, its a curious move by Southwest as this is an actual expansion of service as they never served CAK before (not counting AirTran).

Allegiant Air to add nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale from Akron-Canton

Discount carrier Allegiant Air (Nasdaq: ALGT) is adding service from the Akron-Canton Airport to another popular vacation destination.

 

The Las Vegas-based airline announced it will add service to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning Oct. 2. Introductory fares for the Fort Lauderdale flight will be as low as $69 one way, the airline said.

 

Fort Lauderdale will join existing year-round service from Akron-Canton to Tampa Bay, and seasonal service to Myrtle Beach and Savannah/Hilton Head. All of those flights began in the spring.

 

The new flights will operate twice weekly between Akron-Canton Airport and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

AA will begin LGA-CAK in November using a CRJ

^a 1x/day, what's the point? AA would have been better off adding to CLE-LGA.

Hopkins and CAK can co-exist- and i think, barring a major expansion of intercity rail or a new airport, this will be the case for some time.

^My comment was on the 1x frequency. if you're in NY and you have a meeting in Akron (e.g. at Goodyear), and you're a loyal AA flyer, you're much better off flying into CLE as it has the frequency than CAK. By entering a 1x at CAK, they lose an opportunity to strengthen their better product, LGA-CLE.

Gotcha. But...I think looking at the amount of seats that southwest flew to LGA, AA decided to stick with what works at CAK for that immediate market, which is more vacations and longer business trips.

Ive noticed on Urban Ohio that we look at growth as a zero sum game. That doesnt have to be whether its suburb vs downtown or CLE vs CAK.  The region is poised for and is beginning to see sustained growth in many sectors.  Growth in one area does not have to mean loss in another

It hasn't seemed to hit the news outlets yet, but I'm hearing that Southwest will significantly cut service again at CAK next April. I heard that flights will be down over 70% compared to last April.

With the cuts coming down the pike for CAK, I might expect to see increased service from Allegiant.  Perhaps that was on the horizon, and a reason why Southwest cut their Florida routes.

 

I wouldn't be surprised to see Allegiant add a CAK-->SFB (Orlando Sanford) route when Southwest exits this market.

GREEN, Ohio – Southwest Airlines announced major cuts at the Akron-Canton Airport on Tuesday, including all nonstop flights to Florida and a route to Las Vegas that hasn't even begun yet.

 

The cuts take place in mid-April, according to Kristie Van Auken, Akron-Canton's senior vice president.

 

Getting eliminated:

 

* Twice daily flights to Orlando.

 

* Daily flights to Tampa.

Interesting quote: “In many ways, they’re very separate markets,” Kopczak said in reference to Cleveland and Akron, noting the two are complementary rather than competing. “Because we have this nice mix of airplanes, it gives us the opportunity to pick and choose different kinds of markets to serve. We saw good success with what we started with in Cleveland.”

Kopczak said depending on the reception, the airline may add additional destinations in the future.

“There is the opportunity potentially to grow there,” he said. “I can’t guarantee anything at this point, but we’re already looking.”

Personally, I think CAK will survive the departure of Allegiant nicely with the most popular destinations being replaced by Spirit. When only one of the airports has a unique route, it's better to put it in CLE to maximize passengers; but when the market is big enough (and the markets Spirit will fly from CAK are), both airports can thrive nicely.

Southwest Airlines plans to end service at two Ohio airports while adding flights elsewhere in the region. The Dallas-based carrier says it’s pulling out of Akron-Canton Airport and Dayton International Airport in June.

 

The airline will be adding flights at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to make up for some of the cuts. No additional routes are planned for John Glenn Columbus International Airport, where Southwest is the largest carrier by passenger volume.

Looks like they are starting up a similar flight at Dayton.  I'm assuming these are ExpressJet flights... I didn't see the aircraft type they were using.

Yeah, the 50-seat ExpressJet ERJ-145s wil most likely be the aircraft operating this route.

The article mentions UA's decision to drop nonstop service from CLE to DCA and LGA as an opportunity for CAK.

 

CLE's remaining nonstop service to DCA is via AA, which is the same carrier providing the route for CAK.

CLE's remaining nonstop service to LGA is from AA and DL, while the route is serviced by AA for CAK.

 

Looks like that doesn't really contribute much to carrier diversity or competition for the route. As DL has increased their presence at Hopkins over the last few years, perhaps they'll add service from CLE to DCA, assuming gate availability there.

 

While CAK has shed passengers to the tune of 44% over the last few years as passenger counts have been cannibalized by more competitive fares at CLE, perhaps their passenger numbers have begun to reach an equilibrium, particularly as CAK's gate renovation project wraps up this year as mentioned in the article.

GREEN, Ohio — The Akron-Canton Airport this week debuted a gleaming, light-filled, $37-million gate expansion project – all it needs now are passengers.

The gate project has been years in the making, part of a $115-million capital project that started in 2015 and also included improvements to the airfield, ticketing area and parking. A dark, cramped section of the terminal, which formerly housed gates for American and Delta airlines, was torn down over the summer.

 

The two-story addition – off the southern end of the terminal – means Akron-Canton travelers should never again have to go outside to board or exit their aircraft. All of the new gates are equipped with jet bridges that connect the terminal to awaiting planes.

 

A fast train from Cleveland to CAK would help....

The new airline Breeze is also quite relevant for CAK. Looks like CAK is going to get direct flights to Charleston, Tampa, and New Orleans.

Low-fare airline Breeze Airways adds flights out of Akron/Canton Airport

 

Breeze Airways, a Utah-based low-fare airline, is adding two new nonstop flights out of Akron/Canton Airport.

 

Breeze, founded by JetBlue founder David Neelema, said it will begin flights from Akron/Canton to Nashville, Tennessee, beginning May 26, and Hartford, Connecticut, beginning June 3.

 

Last year, Breeze initiated service at Akron/Canton Airport, with service to Tampa Bay, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; and New Orleans.

More bad news for CAK. Spirit is pulling out completely in June and American is ceasing flights to Chicago.

I suppose it didn't make too much sense to have Spirit flying out of both CLE and CAK, but I have to admit I liked having them at CAK.

 

The travel sector for the moment is apparently booming, so I'm hopeful that despite this, CAK will be able to find new tenants for those vacated terminals.

Spirit says the suspension of flights is only temporary and they are planning to be back in CAK next November.

CAK just landed a non-stop to Vegas with Breeze.

Breeze Airways is adding a seventh destination from the Akron-Canton Airport, with nonstop service to Las Vegas starting in October.

 

The route will run twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, starting Oct. 6.

Breeze Airways to fly nonstop from Akron-Canton to Orlando

 

Breeze Airways said it will begin nonstop flights from Akron-Canton Airport to Orlando, Florida, beginning March 1, 2023.

 

The Cottonwood Heights, Utah-based airline said the flights will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Breeze already serves six routes from Akron-Canton, including Charleston, South Carolina; Las Vegas; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Tampa; and West Palm Beach, Florida.

 

Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) officials were enthusiastic about the announcement.

Allegiant continues to expand at the Akron-Canton Airport, adding new flights to Nashville starting in February.

 

The nonstop flights will run three times per week — on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays — starting Feb. 15.
