95% chance i'll be attending. I heard they give mad free stuff away. Protein, t-shirts, etc.

There is a UFC fight at Nationwide on March 3. I'll be there . . .

Also, word to the wise...ComFest is going on at Goodale Park that same weekend this year, so plan on it being packed anywhere near the Short North.

Not really sure what I was thinking here...comfest is still a couple months away. It's the Gallery Hop that's gonna be nuts!

I barely made the flight because of the mass exodus heading out of town. You'd think with all of the spandex that people were wearing, the security lines would go pretty quickly, but it wasn't the case.

LOL

^ You're right about the free stuff too. Everyone at the airport had monsterous plastic bags full of schwag (power bars, protein, supplements, shirts, etc...).

 • 2 weeks later...

I can't wait to load up on free Tshirts today :]

As a matter of policy, I reject all offers of free protein.

The Arnold Classic = Halloween for grown men. I have two giant bags full of t shirts and suppliments.

I didn't like most of the protein shakes there; Im a big fan of the EAS Myoplex though. I drank atleast 7 cups :]

The UFC fight was awesome. 19,000 plus people. The most ever for a UFC event and I read an article it was the most profitable event for Nationwide Arena in the history of Nationwide Arena.

 • 11 months later...

The man himself will be attending this event in Columbus and I get to meet him personally on March 1st, along with my parents whom will be officiating the bike race portion of this event. Arnold is one of my idols and I cannot wait to meet him! :yap:

CONVENTION CENTER

Arnold on track despite damage

Pipe-burst cleanup could hit $3 million

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 -3:07 AM

By Bill Bush, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The cost to repair the Greater Columbus Convention Center after a burst water main could reach $3 million, an official said yesterday. But the repair work is progressing and the Arnold Sports Festival, which is expected to attract 155,000 people, likely will be on solid ground when the three-day event starts a week from Friday.

Three sections of meeting rooms in the northwest corner of the 1.7 million-square-foot convention center were damaged when an uncharted 16-inch city water main broke beneath the concrete floor on Jan. 9, sending water washing into the building. The meeting rooms make up about 5 percent of the center, said Jennifer Davis, spokeswoman for the facility.

Most of the center reopened the day after the flooding, but the meeting rooms -- near where the break happened -- remain closed. The concrete floor in that area had to be dug up and replaced, but that work is expected to be two-thirds done by the time the Arnold opens Feb. 29, Davis said.

Yeah there's a lot of nice looking women there; a lot of them aren't body builders, just models. I don't really dig bleach blonde hair with orange skin though. So many times I wanted to say "Hey an oompa loompa just called, they want their complexion back". "Stop eating so many damn carrots" "You look like a giant citrus" etc etc.

Here's a pic of my friend playing one of the games. They have games where you can win free stuff. Or they'll throw tshirts into the crowds. I got into a tug-o-war match with one dude because we grabbed it at the same time. I won. Hehe

I don't like Arnold or his politics; I just liked getting all the free sh!t :-D Arnold really isn't that big. He's shorter than I thought he'd be. He can't be over 6'1. That washup Lou Ferrigno was there. People barely noticed him!

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Jim Lorimer was relaxing at Arnold Schwarzenegger's Santa Monica home when he felt compelled to suggest to his friend and business partner, who was in his late 30s, that it was time he marry his girlfriend of eight years. "You've got to experience all of life's process: marriage, having children and, most importantly, grandchildren," Lorimer recalled saying. "You've got the girl, the relationship is great." "He took a puff on the cigar and said 'Thanks,' " Lorimer recalled. Weeks later Schwarzenegger proposed to Maria Shriver. At the couple's 1986 wedding, Lorimer read a Bible verse to his friend.

Such counsel at life's crossroads has forged a loyal bond between the former mayor of Worthington and Nationwide executive, and the sitting governor of California. Many outsiders say it is the reason the Arnold Classic is coming to Columbus this week for the 20th time. "It has been the greatest partnership I have ever been in, based on trust, soul mates," Schwarzenegger said Friday after landing in Sacramento.

Schwarzenegger and Lorimer: history of a long-lasting friendship

Monday, February 25, 2008

• 1962: The Ohio Track Club women's team, which Jim Lorimer started, wins the National Track and Field Championships; 15-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger begins weightlifting in his native Austria.

• 1964: Schwarzenegger enters bodybuilding competitions.

• 1965: Schwarzenegger serves a year in the Austrian army; Lorimer starts a corporate fitness program at Nationwide Insurance, where he is a vice president.

• 1968: Schwarzenegger moves to the U.S.; Lorimer brings him to Columbus to guest-pose during a bodybuilding competition. Schwarzenegger promises to produce competitions with Lorimer in Columbus when he retires.

• 1970: Lorimer flies Schwarzenegger to Columbus from London to compete in the new Mr. World competition; Schwarzenegger wins.

• 1975: Schwarzenegger retires from competitive bodybuilding after being named Mr. Olympia for the sixth consecutive time; he is featured in the film Pumping Iron.

• 1976: Lorimer and Schwarzenegger begin to produce the Mr. Olympia and other bodybuilding competitions.

• 1983: Schwarzenegger becomes a U.S. citizen.

• 1986: Lorimer reads a tribute at the marriage of Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver.

• 1989: The first Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic is held in Columbus as a one-day event. It draws 4,000 fans and has a purse of $125,000.

• 1990: The winner of the Classic, Shawn Rey of Los Angeles, is stripped of his title for steroid use. "The unfortunate thing is he could have won the competition without steroids," Lorimer says. Schwarzenegger serves as grand marshal of the Columbus Day parade.

• 1993: The Fitness Expo is added to the event.

• 1994: Fitness Weekend '94 becomes a three-day event with the addition of the Fitness International competition.

• 1995: Prize money reaches $300,000.

• 1996: Schwarzenegger says he likes the intimate environs of 4,000-seat Franklin County Veterans Memorial and doesn't want to move the sold-out event to a larger facility. A martial-arts festival is added; the Expo grows to 350 exhibitors.

• 1997: Both men say they turned down a $1 million offer to move the Classic to Moscow. They vow it will never leave Columbus.

• 1998: 40,000 spectators are expected; estimates are that it pumps $11 million into the Columbus economy.

• 1999: Schwarzenegger and other celebrity investors in Easton Town Center christen its Planet Movies; Schwarzenegger leaves behind his 48-ton Austrian army tank as a memento.

• 2000: The Greater Columbus Convention Center is added as a venue for Arnold Fitness Weekend.

• 2001: 5K Pump and Run is added to the weekend.

• 2003: Schwarzenegger is elected governor of California. A fitness competition for women is added to the weekend; 70,000 spectators are expected, and more than 600 booths are reserved in the Expo.

• 2004: About 15,000 participants are expected at Arnold Fitness Weekend. Schwarzenegger advocates a tougher stance against steroid use.

• 2005: Gov. Schwarzenegger cuts his business ties to the Arnold Fitness Weekend; he will no longer receive the reported $100,000 fee for attending the event; instead, it is given it to charity.

• 2006: Lorimer announces that the Arnold Sports Festival has committed to remain in Columbus through 2015. Nationwide Arena is added as a third venue. Lorimer says the weekend draws more than 155,000 visits by fans.

• 2007: The winner of the Classic, Victor Martinez, receives $130,000. He's later named as an "unindicted co-conspirator" by New York authorities investigating illegal steroid sales. Eventually, a prosecutor says he doubts Martinez will be charged.

• 2008: The Arnold Classic marks its 20th year by bringing back the previous winners.

The Arnold Sports Festival, the world's largest multi-sport fitness weekend, returns to Columbus this weekend for its 20th anniversary. The weekend will feature 37 events and 12 Olympic sports, including The Arnold Amateur IFBB International Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Championships, the Arnold Cycling Challenge, the USA Powerlifting Championships, and USA Weightlifting's Olympic Team Qualifying Event. In addition, the Arnold Fitness EXPO at the Greater Columbus Convention Center has expanded to 650 booths. Events will also be held at Veteran's Memorial and Nationwide Arena.

I'm not really into bodybuilding or exercise in general, but this is why I like this event:

This weekend, the Arnold Sports Festival, the overarching event that includes the Arnold Classic, will bring 17,000 athletes in 30 sports and an expected 155,000 "visits" from fans to fill Columbus hotels, restaurants and businesses. City tourism folks say it will pump $39 million into the local economy.

NICE!

Exercise is not my scene either. But the Arnold Classic has become a huge annual event in downtown Columbus.

The Arnold now occupies Vets Memorial, the Convention Center and the Nationwide Arena. Its so big that you can't miss it, no matter who you are. Plus its a fun event for Columbus.

Agreed. Though it's not really my type of thing, anything that helps out the local economy and brings positive press to Columbus is always a great thing. And the orange-looking women are always hilarious to watch.

I think my brother is boxing in it this year; I'm not going up this year though.

I wonder how often those shuttles are moved during events aside from the Arnold. It's a really nice thing to have.

I think it's great that they're the biggest fitness wekend event in the world but I wish they would have made it like a week long event. I didn't like missing out on some of the stuff that was going on at the same time.

The importance of the Arnold Classic in the bodybuilding world is unbelievable. Believe me, the Arnold is huge. I have attend MuscleMania, but have not been to the Arnold Classic.

Orange women don't appear orange on stage, and that's what counts. Without the Dream Tan, Hot-Stuf and Pro Tan their bodies would look flat under the lights. I have painted enough bodies to know it looks weird up close, but how good it looks on stage. The darker the better.

Was in Las Vegas at the end of November for the Fitness American Weekend, and was amazed at the interest. We had a great time, met lots of people, and made lots of contacts. Funny thing is, most of the bodybuilders prefer not to hang out with other bodybuilders on their off time. They are super competitive and I think they need down time. Talk about a high maintenance group! But, still fun.

It is the one thing that puts Columbus on the map internationally, although it is with a niche audience.

And the UFC will be back too.

^That's the main reason I go. I love watching UFC.

bah! here's the freakin for real arnold classic !!!!

ok, ok so maybe it's the fo shizzle arnold classic!

arnold_pot.jpg

I would like to go. :-)

but he needs about 12 more pounds or so.

Roids are all the rage lol

What is his diet like? I'm trying to bulk up and not look so frail. It IS a full time job. I started making home made weight gainer formula because I think supplements are a ripoff and too expensive. I Grind up oats into a powder using a coffee grinder, then add sugar for simple carbs, a little bit of extra virgin olive oil for the good fats, a scoop of protein powder for the protein, hersheys syrup for the taste, milk, and ice. It's the only way I can consume 4000 quality calories in a day. Oats are like the perfect base because they're so rich in nutrients. Hopefully it'll make a difference in a few months.

That's really cool that you get to manage some pretty high profile people. I bet your job is never boring!

How does one do this full time? I would like to just be able to go to the gym, but can't seem to find the money. I have the time, but not the money. Anyway. Looking forward to seeing him at the Classic in 2010.

I always wondered why they had to give themselves the fake tans. I always thought it made them look terrible. But if it helps them on stage with all the lights, then more power to them.

David, any ideas on how I can get started at home. I don't really want to lose weight but add more bulk.

The strongest weekend in Columbus: Arnold Sports Festival

Posted February 17, 2009

By Amy Gatto Klein, Convention Services Manager

One of the strongest weekends in Columbus is right around the corner. It’s time again for the Arnold Sports Festival, taking place March 6–8.

Named after Arnold Schwarzenegger (who won the Mr. World competition in Columbus in 1970), the event has evolved over 21 years to encompass more than 35 events including 11 recognized Olympic sports.

Arnold Sports Festival ‘sitting out’ downturn

Business First of Columbus - by Jeff Bell

Friday, February 20, 2009

Fitness buffs, athletes and the businesses that bank on them are not letting the tough economic times dim their enthusiasm for the upcoming Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus. Ticket sales and athlete entries are on pace with last year’s event, which drew 160,000 visitors and 17,000 competitors, said Jim Lorimer, the event’s long-time director.

In addition, the Arnold Fitness Expo at the Greater Columbus Convention Center will have 700 vendor booths, up about 50 from a year ago, with another 50 on a waiting list. “We decided not to participate in the recession,” said Lorimer, a retired Nationwide Insurance executive who has been organizing bodybuilding events in Columbus with legendary bodybuilder, actor and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for more than 30 years.

Although it wasn't listed above, I believe the UFC championships are going to be at the Nationwide Arena on Saturday Night.

Yeah, UFC 96 is going to be Saturday at the Arena. They've started to run an event during the Arnold Classic every year because there's such a strong overlap in the audience.

It's actually a really uninteresting fight card. But they're just assuming that the Arnold attendees will go see it regardless of quality.

MAP OF EVENTS / SHUTTLE BUS ROUTE

Motorists are advised to park near Nationwide Arena, Veterans Memorial, COSI Columbus or Columbus City Center and hop on shuttles to the venues. The buses, marked “Arnold Expo Public Shuttle,” will stop at 11 locations Downtown, passing about every 20 minutes. The shuttles - available to anyone, not just those with Arnold Sports Festival tickets - will run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Did anyone go this year?

I missed it because we just could not fit it into the schedule, but will go for sure next year. Two friends competed in the amateur division. One good friend, Franco Dominguez came in 9th in the overall, which is pretty good. My friend was under the impression that Ohio was part of California...because I live here, and told him it was in my hometown. Now he knows.

My sister went, but she hasn't given me a full report yet.

Ohio a part of Calif? What the hell?

The Arnold Sports Festival is coming up. March 4-7. Martial Arts, Gymnastics, Fencing, Cheerleading, Skateboarding, 5k run, Boxing, Weightlifting, MMA, etc. etc. Tickets are 10 bucks per day at the door at the Columbus Convention Center. I believe the ticket is good for all of the events held at Vets Memorial on the same day but I'm not sure. If you want to meet celebrities and go to Columbus' biggest event of the year, I strongly recommend it; it's a good time :)

^^He was probably thinking of Ojai Ca. hometown of Steve Austin and Jaime Sommers. AKA the six million dollar man and the bionic woman
