Located well beyond the reach of the nearest transit route, and thus well beyond the reach of a large, untapped labor pool.

It is Peloton.   Maybe they expect all employees to ride bicycles to work?  🤷‍♂️

Naw the whole point of Peloton is to get some cycling in without dealing with weather or people.   :)

The Port for shipping lol.

But actually, it would sorta be cool to see them take the lead on event sponsorship and overall promotion for cycling and wellness. In that case the factory could be a destination. Like Nike in Oregon.

I mean, if the factory wasn't being located so far off in the woods.

First Solar to double U.S. panel-making capacity with new plant near Toledo

Brian Eckhouse - Bloomberg - June 9, 2021

"First Solar Inc., the largest U.S. solar-panel maker, plans to invest $680 million in a new factory in Ohio to more than double its manufacturing capacity in the country. ... The 1.8-million square foot (170,000 square meter) facility in Lake Township, Ohio, is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2023, contingent on permitting and approval of state, regional and local incentives. The company expects the facility to create about 500 jobs and plans to fund construction with existing cash resources."

First Solar to build 3rd plant, add 500 jobs

Jon Chavez - The Blade - June 9, 2021

"Displaying high confidence in the U.S. solar industry in general and northwest Ohio specifically, solar panel maker First Solar Inc. said it will invest $680 million to build a third manufacturing plant in the Toledo area by 2023, doubling its production capacity and creating 500 jobs. ... First Solar’s current operations in Wood County have the capacity to produce 2.7 gigawatts worth of panels annually. The new plant will add another 3.3 gigawatts, bringing total production capacity to 6 gigawatts annually. The entire U.S. solar panel production capacity is expected to reach 11 gigawatts once the new First Solar facility is online. ... If there was any doubt that northwest Ohio is the solar capital of North America, that has been erased, Mr. Koralewski added."

Ground is broken in Wood County for Peloton's 1st US manufacturing facility

LUCKEY, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted visited Wood County on Monday to deliver remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony of Peloton Output Park.  The new facility in Luckey will be Peloton's first dedicated factory in the United States.

Peloton manufactures workout bikes and treadmills, as well as accessories and apparel. ... The factory will be located at the Eastwood Commerce Center near U.S. Route 20.  The facility will sit on more than 200 acres and will consist of manufacturing, office and amenities space. ... The project is expected to create 2,174 jobs with a capital investment of $401 million.  Production is set to start in 2023.

Many are calling this work a win for Ohio and specifically Wood County. "Peloton could have gone anywhere. They could have gone anywhere in the world," DeWine said. "They came here and this was a fierce competition. We won."  The search to bring a facility stateside took two years, with company executives looking at states like Michigan and Georgia.  But ultimately Ohio, specifically Wood County, beat out all the competition.

Not looking good for the planned Peloton factory in Wood County. If they can't even use their current manufacturing capacity, highly doubt that they will need the new space. Their stock price has crashed over the past several months too.

I doubted whether this was really going to happen...such a huge plant announced so quickly.

Peloton is scrapping plans to build its own factory

https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-factory-ohio-scrap-plans-construction-bike-treadmill-john-foley-2022-2

Peloton is scrapping plans to build its own $400 million factory making its treadmills and bikes in Ohio.

"The company is winding down the development of its Peloton Output Park (POP) manufacturing plan," it said in a statement Tuesday. This would result in $60 million in restructuring capital expenditures, it said.

Looks like it's official now.

Not sure what to think of this entire connected-home-fitness sector at this point.  Obviously, the prices of publicly traded companies in the space (PTON in particular) have collapsed.  I see equipment advertised all the time on my FB feed: Peloton, Mirror, Tonal, Tempo, NordicTrack Vault, Hydrow, Ergatta.  I'm starting to see some discounts on those pieces of equipment, but nothing that can't be explained by normal post-Christmas clearance.  Not the kind of firesale prices you'd expect if the sector were really collapsing and glutted with inventory it needed to liquidate.  Though I've also heard that the equipment isn't really sold at that much of a markup (meaning that companies will be reluctant to cut it past the point where they'll at least break even) and the real money is in the connected subscriptions--the razor-and-blade model, in a sense.

Peloton’s problems aren’t just Peloton’s

The company’s downfall could spell trouble for its peers.

Peloton is spiraling, and its downfall could be a harbinger of real trouble for an entire industry. The at-home digital exercise company is one of several that thrived during the pandemic and promised to change forever how we work out. But now, it’s not clear if they’ll be around to finish the at-home fitness revolution they started.

There’s no denying that the pandemic made working out at home extremely popular. After gyms were forced to close their doors, people canceled their memberships and invested in exercise equipment and online class subscriptions instead. So much so that companies like Peloton couldn’t keep up with demand, leaving many customers to wait months for their bikes and treadmills to be delivered. But Covid-19 restrictions didn’t last forever. Eventually, when gyms started reopening, people stopped buying — and using — exercise equipment with the same enthusiasm they had in the spring of 2020.

While it sucks the imminent opening of a factory and associated jobs is not happened, at least this facility will get built out to probably a core and shell, that could then be fit-out by a new company looking for manufacturing space, for much cheaper than building ground up.

This may give NW Ohio a leg up over competing sites for whatever company may be looking.

Hopefully Peleton is fair on the sale price and is not too extreme in trying to use the sale of this facility to make up for losses elsewhere.

One enormous Amazon warehouse and one regional delivery warehouse opened in Rossford (very close to Peloton) and Southwyck in the Toledo area in the last two years. Warehouse space is pretty tight in Toledo, so this will probably be filled up soon.

First Solar announces $185 million expansion for NW Ohio factories.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - First Solar said it will invest $185 million in upgrading and expanding its Northwest Ohio manufacturing footprint, currently the largest vertically-integrated complex of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, by 0.9 GWDC.

As part of its plans, First Solar will invest in expanding the capacity of its two operating facilities in Perrysburg and Lake Township, Ohio, by 0.6 GWDC to 3.6 GWDC of annual Series 6 module capacity. The company will also expand its third Ohio factory, expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2023, to 3.5 GWDC of annual Series 7 module capacity. The expansion will increase First Solar’s total investment in its Ohio manufacturing facilities to over $3 billion, with a cumulative annual production capacity of over 7 GWDC by 2025.

“In passing the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, Congress and the Biden-Harris Administration has entrusted our industry with the responsibility of enabling America’s clean energy future and we must meet the moment in a manner that is both timely and sustainable,” said Mark Widmar, chief executive officer, First Solar.

“Abbott has picked Bowling Green for a new manufacturing plant that will make powder nutritional products.

Abbott, which also has a plant in Columbus, will invest $536 million and create 450 jobs at the plant, the latest in what has been a string of announcements by the state of new manufacturing projects including projects from Intel, Honda, Ford and General Motors.

“We’re building this plant for additional capacity to produce these important specialty and metabolic formulas that families rely on,” Robert B. Ford, Abbott's chairman and CEO, said in a news release. “Abbott has long been part of Ohio, and we’re proud to become part of the local community in Bowling Green.”

Abbott's Bowling Green project is contingent on the approval of state and local incentives. JobsOhio, the state's economic development arm, plans to provide assistance for the project. Those details will be released after a final agreement is executed.

Groundbreaking is expected to take place in 2023 and construction should be finished in 2026.“

self inflicted troubles for jeep —

Jeep prices have gone through the roof.

Buyers are bailing and dealers are furious

The problems at Stellantis are not limited to Gladiator or even to Jeep. The Ram truck brand has also struggled to keep up with truck offerings from General Motors and Ford. Dodge has cut some of its popular models in anticipation of electric versions. Chrysler, once the company’s core brand, is essentially down to one model, the Pacifica minivan, arguably the weakest segment of the US market.

The day after the US presidential election, Stellantis announced it would cut one of two shifts at its Toledo Assembly Complex South plant, which builds the Gladiator, indefinitely laying off about 1,100 workers.
