Posted February 24, 200718 yr this final si thread is for the railfans. the staten island railway aka sir is a train most tourists and most nyer's for that matter will never know. it feels like a cross between a subway, rapid transit and commuter rail. first -- get all your sir history and old pics are here: http://www.nycsubway.org/nyc/sirt/ the mta map the secret trick is to not board at st. george by the ferry, but to walk to the next station at tompkinsville. st. george is the only station where you have to pay. a look back in the cut toward st. george some new tod on the platform - a st. george bound train whips in here comes the ride - the tottenville bound train btw the sir is all above ground except for a small tunnel near st. george all the sir stations are named for former towns on si except jeff ave filthy windows -- they catch all the weather some businesses oh the trouble i had trying to get a shot like this an unusual sight -- instead of the typical nyc subway map sir has its own bus/train map outerbridge crossing another sir only map pulling into tottenville - end of the line *** i hope you enjoyed riding the rails on staten island! & thats the last si thread ***
February 24, 200718 yr I've lived here almost 20 years and have been to SI twice. Thanks for the photos
February 26, 200718 yr Hmmm, the SIR looks kinda like the Cleveland Red Line (and is the only heavy rail line with lower ridership than the Red Line). Cool shots- I've always wanted to check it out.
February 27, 200718 yr ^ that is exactly what it reminds me of. i heard they are talking about building or i guess reviving a westward line on staten island that goes along the northside from the ferry to bayonne, nj.
