Posted February 26, 200718 yr So the Saints & Sinner tour is on Saturday, March 3 To promote it here on Urban Ohio a bit, allow me to post a preview of what you might see. This year will be a little different in that there will be two tours. One a walking tour and one a trip by bus. Trying to mix it up, make it interesting so people keep coming back . . . Tour 1 is the walking tour. Ticket sales will begin at 11:30 at Kaldi's. I think it's going to be $10.00. This year, Richard Schade from the German Consul is going to speak prior to the tour on German Immigration and the effects on Cincinnati. He starts about 11:30 and the walk begins 12:30. We are focusing on "Saints" this year and on Tour 1 we have scheduled (subject to final confimation) four churches to go inside along with a walk that discusses Over-the-Rhine's bars, breweries, beer gardens, and other misc. places where the citizens relaxed. Churches included as of 2/25/07 St. John's Unitarian, First Eglish Lutheran, St. Francis Seraph (including basement!), and Old St. Mary's. We'll be walking through Washington Park, look at some more churches on Race Street and walk down Vine to experience THE street that in the 1890's had 23 saloons between 12th & 13th alone! Tour 2 will begin with a short lecture on the Economics of Brewing in Cincinnati at Milton's at 12:15. (You can take a shuttle from Kaldi's.) You will leave by bus to do a driving tour of the breweries in OTR's Brewery District and you will then go in St. Philippus at the head of Elm Street. This is a free tour! I didn't have a picture so this one is from Monte's Cincinnati Images. St. Philippus is church anear the top of the photo. Then, after both tours are complete, I'd like to invite all the Urban Ohio folks who would car to come, to the rooftop of the Emery Center, 100 E. Central Parkway, for a small reception to say thanks for coming. I'll serve some German wines, German & Cincinnati beers and some Bockfest inspired hor-d'oeuvres and I may have some German music playing in the background . . . Here are some views (I hope some of you can make it): There will be an additional bus trip to and lecture at Longworth Hall around 3:00. More details to follow if you are interested. If you are looking to go inside some of the breweries, stay tuned for future tours!
February 26, 200718 yr I took this tour last year and it was great. I highly recomend it, then enjoy the rest of Bockfest.
February 26, 200718 yr Are we able to buy tickets in advance? I missed the tour last year. Does it sell out?
February 26, 200718 yr This year Tour 1 is a walking tour so we will not sell out. The bus tour (Tour 2) has a limit of 50 people (all that can fit on the bus) but it shouldn't sell out either. It is first come first serve.
February 26, 200718 yr Wonderful! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 26, 200718 yr Hey I recognize one of those photos :) I went last year and it was fantastic. Dan... aka BallHatGuy is one hell of a tour guide.
February 26, 200718 yr Sounds like I'm gonna have to go for this one!! Looks great, and the rooftop get together on Emery looks to die for!
February 26, 200718 yr Nothing depresses me more than hearing about how OTR "was". If I wasn't out of town I'd probably go though.
February 26, 200718 yr Hey I recognize one of those photos :) I gave you credit :) I didn't have one of Philippus and knew you would have something . . .
February 27, 200718 yr I took a quick pic of St Phillipus this AM (so it's kinda dark & gloomy (welcome to my world)) You can't reaally make out the 2 things that people tend to remember about the church, the helmet on the cross in the round front window & the golden hand pointing heavenwards atop the steeple.
February 27, 200718 yr Thanks Quimbob! And you will learn about those things on the tour. On the inside most notable is the large, ornate organ donated by Christian Moerlein, a memebr of the congregation.
