March 11, 200718 yr Well, you are correct that Memphis is the blackest metro in America, but I for one do think it's a major center of African-American culture (along with Detroit, Atlanta, and some other cties). Memphis ain't the center, but it's one of the centers... Big difference between "a" center and "the" center. But in your Toledo argument, you say Northwest Ohio is "the" center of Mexican Ohio, which is completely incorrect. Do Germans look to Cincinnati? Do Poles look to Toledo? Do African-Americans look to Dayton and Cleveland?? Even if they don't, that doesn't make the cultures present in those cities any smaller or less visible. Toledo is Ohio's most Mexican-cultured city, plain and simple. I never said Toledo wasn't Ohio's most "Mexican-cultured city." I said it isn't the CENTER for Mexicans in Ohio. If you don't get that, then I give up. And btw, judging by Prensa readership, Mexicans do look towards Toledo for information on their culture in this state (and Michigan). Add the fact that Toledo has the largest Mexican-American festivals and concerts in the state, and yes, Toledo IS the center of that culture in Ohio. The readership with Prensa or whatever is that way due to Northwest Ohio (get this!) having the MOST MEXICANS. That doesn't mean Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, or Cleveland Mexicans think "Gee, Toledo is our state's Mexica!" Also, I believe Festival Latina in Columbus is the state's largest Mexican/Hispanic festival. If you want to dismiss population percentage, foreign-language newspapers, festivals, music, etc., etc., etc. WHAT THE HELL ELSE WOULD YOU MEASURE THIS BY? Get off this "most" shit. It makes no sense in regarding the topic of being a "center." A center is something that is universally (or regionally, in this case) regarded. It is without question that Toronto is the "center" of Canada's financial power. It is NOT without question that Toledo is the "center" of Mexicans in Ohio. It just happens to have the largest Mexican population in the state, though by a measly number. March 11, 200718 yr Top 5 things I've learned since joining UrbanOhio: Don't get CDawg associating Toledo with Michigan Don't get CDawg comparing Toledo to other Ohio cities. Don't get CDawg comparing OU with Harvard and contrasting them with Ohio state schools. Don't get CDawg talking about Toledo being a cultural mecca. Don't get CDawg talking.

Memphis ain't the center, but it's one of the centers... How does Memphis, (61.4%* African American), trump Detroit (81.6%* African American)? *2000 Census Figures

March 11, 200718 yr You are aware that Memphis is the blackest metropolitan area in the country, yet it is laughable to think that Memphis is the center of black culture in the country, isn't it? Moving on... Weird..I thought it would be Atlanta. They don't call it "Memphrica" for nothing. ;)
March 11, 200718 yr No surprise though to see Cleveland's newspaper ranking so high. Newspaper readership in Cleveland is higher than elsewhere in Ohio. yeah... but it's not like they're reading a "quality" newspaper... ;)
March 11, 200718 yr ^it's probably best not to get me started on the media in Ohio. I guess it's the top nine things I've learned 9. Most news media in Ohio sucks and has a white conservative bias...except for the Blade of coure.  Taking down Republicans since the big shift... That's certainly one area where I'm glad my city is affiliated with Toledo... go Block Company!
March 11, 200718 yr I never said Toledo wasn't Ohio's most "Mexican-cultured city." I said it isn't the CENTER for Mexicans in Ohio what's the difference? But in your Toledo argument, you say Northwest Ohio is "the" center of Mexican Ohio, which is completely incorrect. Northwest Ohio is about 7% Mexican in a state that is barely 1% Mexican (Columbus is only 1% Mexican too). That shouldn't even need questioning. The readership with Prensa or whatever is that way due to Northwest Ohio (get this!) having the MOST MEXICANS. exactly. A center is something that is universally (or regionally, in this case) regarded. With your Memphis argument, you chose to change the playing field to America as a whole. Do apples to apples next time. Is Memphis the center of African-American culture in Tennessee? Of course it is, and for obvious reasons (more African-Americans). Much like Toledo/Northwest Ohio is the center of Mexican culture in Ohio (more Mexican-Americans). So you don't get it so why bother continuing this. Then again, I should've stopped the first time. You rarely will find southern Ohioans talking about Cincinnati, Dayton, or Columbus in any way that doesn't make them look superior. In southern drawl: Who-dey!!! In drunken slur: O-H-I-O!!...we thought it'd be cool to steal THE Ohio University's cheer! 3. Don't expect southerners to understand the different culture and dynamic of the northern cities. 4. Never expect people in Ohio to have a realistic view of their hometown or state (positive or negative). 5. Toledo is in Michigan. 6. Republican power is concentrated in the southern metros. Ohio would be a solidly blue state without them. 7. Even Bustown ain't the mecca of growth people make it out to be. 8. Athens and Sandusky > all of Ohio. The insecure sarcasm is quite great these days... Good point...you fit the mold perfectly! 2. Well thx again for being a total :ass: and completely wrong in your statements! I'm not real sure who in southern Ohio uses the O-H-I-O thing but go ahead with your incorrect assertions. On top of all this I would like to remind you that Cincinnati and Dayton are not southern cities, maybe you need to take a geography course or a history lesson. The geographical divides of the US do not put Cincy or Dayton in the south...nor do the social, political and other historical events. Need I remind you that Ohio was NOT in the south for the Civil War...nor was it a state that was in between. It was clearly a northern state! Not to mention THE CIVIL WAR DAYS ARE OVER!!!!!!!! I would hope that the divide of the Union and Confederate states does not still exist, but you seem to continue to push the measure...well done! I still don't know where your obvious hatred for SW Ohio comes from. Maybe its from the fact that Toledo wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Cincinnati. Toledo has always been a blip on the radar and was a stop on the canal that led to Cincinnati. If you think that ANY city in Ohio is a true northern city (like NYC, Boston, etc) then you are sorely mistaken...especially if you claim it about Toledo. I grow VERY tired of rants and outright stereotyping of people from other cities in Ohio and elsewhere...especially for your favorite target SW Ohio. Oh and yes SW Ohio has voted red over the years while NE Ohio consistently blue. But if you've got a problem with it, then I guess you have a problem with the 4 million or so people that live in SW Ohio. WHY THE HELL CAN'T YOU JUST COMMENT AND ADD PRODUCTIVE KNOWLEDGE TO THE FORUM?? YOU CONSTANTLY WASTE OUR TIME WITH YOU TOLEDO PROPAGANDA AND OUTRIGHT HATRED OF MOST OTHER PLACES IN THE STATE!
March 12, 200718 yr Toledo Propaganda. Now there's a word-pair I never dreamed I'd see. This thread is getting WAY outta hand. I think we all just need to take a break, masturbate to some skyline porn, smoke a cigarette, listen to some Bling Kong and start fresh tomorrow morning. 'Kay? Kay.
