Lakewood -- Teenagers hip hop at the Beck Center for the Arts. A few blocks away at the Local Girl Gallery, children learn to draw. Musicians strum their stuff at Bela Dubby as patrons sip beer and coffee.

 

Just a typical week in Lakewood.

 

So much art is being made, taught and performed in the city that community leaders said the time has come to create an arts district, maybe more than one...

"The second area is Birdtown, a residential and small storefront area in the southeast corner of the city. The neighborhood would be an ideal space for live/work studios, but the city would first have to change its zoning from residential to mixed use, Jordan said."

I think this is excellent news for the city of Lakewood. Most importantly, the increased development near Beck will continue the trend of making Detroit an all-around fabulous street from one end of the city (Rockport Square) to the other (Beck).

Lakewood- Workers on the first floor of the Lake Erie Building dart around on forklifts moving coils of metal. Big pieces of equipment whir as metal is heated and formed.

 

It is a far cry from the work under way on the second floor of the century-old factory.

 

Martha Cliffel cuts glass plates into pieces for mosaics. Next door, Robb Durr finishes a larger-than-life foam figure of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin. Down a hall, decorated with paintings, ornamental lights and throw rugs, Phyllis Fannin demonstrates how prints are made on her paper press...
