A few blocks away at the Local Girl Gallery, children learn to draw. Musicians strum their stuff at Bela Dubby as patrons sip beer and coffee. Just a typical week in Lakewood. So much art is being made, taught and performed in the city that community leaders said the time has come to create an arts district, maybe more than one... Most importantly, the increased development near Beck will continue the trend of making Detroit an all-around fabulous street from one end of the city (Rockport Square) to the other (Beck).

Big pieces of equipment whir as metal is heated and formed. It is a far cry from the work under way on the second floor of the century-old factory.
