Advocacy group's study tallies 6-figure loss in 7 years

Biggest losers

States with the largest net job losses between 2001 and 2007 blamed on the U.S. trade deficit with China:

 

1. California -- 325,800

 

2. Texas -- 202,900

 

3. New York -- 127,000

 

4. Illinois -- 102,800

 

5. Ohio 102,700

 

6. Florida -- 100,900

 

7. Pennsylvania -- 85,100

 

8. North Carolina -- 79,800

The trade deficit with China has cost Ohio more than 100,000 jobs since 2001, and the greatest losses have been in manufacturing, according to a study being issued today.

 

The report by the Economic Policy Institute, an advocacy group in Washington, D.C., was timed for release days before China hosts the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

This basically shows the ten largest states by population.  Therefore, this just tells me it is happening everywhere. 

"Where does Ohio stand in the global economy? I'm afraid Ohio is one of the losers," he said.

 

And which state, if any, is a winner?  None, according to this report, so we're all "losers" - why single out Ohio?

 

Therefore, this just tells me it is happening everywhere.

 

Exactly, it just doesn't sound as good to say that some little state like Delaware has lost 5000 or so jobs

when you can make a splashy headline out of Ohio losing 100,000...

 

Of all places, Idaho had the biggest job loss by percentage with 2.59% (or 14,700 jobs) followed by New Hampshire with 2.50% (15,700).

 

Ohio is tied with Kentucky in 19th place with 1.85% job loss rate

There s a pattern here, though.  The job losses are coming from, in part, the West Coast (more connected to the Pacfic Rim economy?) and states that make a low wage/non union pitch...the Carolinas and Texas.  Maybe Tennessee too.

 

 

The Midwest is suffering from job losses due to productivity increases in manufacturing as well as sector-specific problems in the auto industry, neither of which are probably directly attributable to China.  That is an interesting chart, however.

 

This is an interesting story that should create some significant reports in the news cycle.  There is something to be said about the abysmal state of our trade relations right now (ridiculous deficit) even with the components that you mention arenn.

 

At some point we are going to have to admit that we (as a country) made some mistakes.  Mistakes that have cost this country jobs, wages, and quite possibly our great middle class.  When that point comes (maybe with the new president), I hope we stand up to our trade partners and say we're going to do what is right for our country and our people.  Because for each new year that passes and we continue to accept the idea that domestically we are losing these jobs we are going to continue to experience dramatic job losses like this...and we can go ahead and kiss our middle class goodbye.

The average person in this country needs to learn to not be so cheap and to buy a few high quality products that make them very happy and fulfilled instead of a jillion pieces of crap that create only shallow pleasure.

No what we need to do is make foreign trade deals that don't sell our workers/people short.  I understand that increased efficiency reduces the need for certain positions, but it is creating the massive job losses that we're seeing today.

The big swathe in North and South Carolina is nearly all textiles which have all but abandoned the US. I imagine the upper midwest has lost some furniture manufacturing.

None of this explains why I can't find a job.

China or no, globalization and productivity increases are causing a major structural collapse of the economy in many if not most Midwest places.  It can be easy to dismiss this as a transition period, but if you are one of those who are being displaced and your community is suffering as a whole, that is not a good thing for America.

 

I think we all realize that there will be tough times here and there and that there will always be pockets of the country that are struggling.  But this seems to be something else entirely.  There is so much displacement going on it is difficult to understand how to absorb it.  And the transition period, which can involve things like packing up and moving away from the only town you've ever known, can be extremely painful and take a long time.

 

Unfortunately, I don't see any end to this in the near term.  Certainly not until the auto industry finishes its restructuring.

 

It's about time someone in Columbus sponsored this. We need to have this expedited.

 

COLUMBUS -- The youngest members of the Ohio legislature have proposed a tax credit they hope will reverse the trend of college-educated young people fleeing the Buckeye State for jobs elsewhere.

 

Under the legislation, college graduates who pledge to live in Ohio would earn a nonrefundable state income tax credit of up to $3,000 per year for up to 10 years. The idea was hatched Wednesday at a Statehouse news conference thrown by Rep. Josh Mandel, a 30-year-old Lyndhurst Republican, and Rep. Jay Goyal, a 27-year-old Mansfield Democrat.

 

"We think this is a bold initiative to change and reverse the exodus of young people from the state," Mandel said. "This will help the businesses here in Ohio have a strong and talented work force that will compete globally."

Mayday...exactly! Although, thinking about it, I would prefer the tax credit to be target toward in-demand fields. But this is a good start.

There is a program like this in Georgia that is wildly popular.  I've heard of people moving to Georgia, from neighboring states, to take advantage of this.  Seems like a great idea for Ohio to adopt.

I wonder if there could be some sort of tiered system that offers relief for student loans as well, such as doubling the deductibility of student loan interest or a system that allows for more money applied to the student loans than a simple tax deduction. This would also open up the program to all age groups and encourage folks to go back to school. It would also a good back-end way to mitigate the high price of Ohio tuition - stay in state after you graduate and we'll have some nice perks for you (having the jobs for these folks is key of course).

In order to pay $3,000 in State Income tax, someone has to have an Adjustable Gross Income of around $100k Figuring deductions, that means a gross of around $120k/yr.  Most college grads start out well below that, even combined if married.

 

So most recent college grads probably pay $1,000/yr in Ohio state Income Tax.  So they would only receive $1,000/yr break initially, probably rising a bit each year after that.

 

Now if they make the $3,000 credit work like the Income Tax Credit and give you a refund if your state taxes are less than $3,000, then that would be great.  If you pay $1,000 in state income tax, Ohio sends you $2,000.

 

If I were just out of college, I would not forgo opportunities elsewhere in the country for a $1,000 tax break from Ohio.  I might give things a second look if I was guaranteed a $3,000 tax break/refund, though.

This isn't really a bad idea.  It'll hurt the state budget in the short term, but provide potential long-term benefits (retention of young professionals) which the state sorely needs.  The next question would be, are there enough jobs to encourage the young professionals to stay?

I also have to agree with that...

One of the things that I find extremely appalling with politicians these days is that they speak about the importance of providing an affordable college education and helping the middle class by providing tax relief but they really do nothing about it.

 

One of the easiest solutions to encourage people to spend money on education is to provide tax deductions on student loan interest in the same way that a person can deduct interest on a home, no matter what income level people have. Currently the IRS only allows a person to deduct a maximum of $2500 interest a year on student loans and in addition, this ability to deduct phases out the more the individual makes after he/she graduates college. Therefore, those students such as medical students who go into deep debt to finance their medical education get little or no deduction after they graduate giving a person a disincentive to incur all those loans and to pursue that education. Even for average college grads, the average loan amount is about 20K for a bachelors degree from a 4 year university. The annual interest on that will be more than $2500 for a long period.

 

With homes people get thousands of dollars of savings every year by deducting the interest on their home mortgage. The reason is because government considers home ownership an important thing. Unfortunately, that is not the same for education.

 

This is nice and all, but it doesn't do anything if the jobs aren't there. I wanted to stay in Cincinnati / Ohio, but here I am, living in Annapolis. There is much more to keeping grads in Ohio than a tax credit.

This might work since the cost of living in Ohio is relatively low. I'm not sure how our wages are compared to other states and metros. I can see where Randy is coming from when he says it works well in Georgia. I remember hearing that they have a fantastic cost-of-living/income ratio in metro Atlanta. I say go for it.

I'd like to start a new thread dedicated to Ohio-based companies that are experiencing a large amount of growth.  To kick things off, here is  a news story picked up by Ohio.com from Inc Magazine detailing the 5,000 fastest growing private companies. NE Ohio has 19 of these.

State failing to track new jobs

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

 

During the past decade, the state has given companies more than $1.7 billion in tax breaks, loans, grants and other incentives to expand or locate in Ohio.

 

In exchange, the businesses promised to create nearly 200,000 jobs.

 

How many jobs actually were created?

 

The state can't tell you.

This is a G*ddamn shame.  And we wonder why the state is lagging! 

 

First we can't properly track the census and now we can't track jobs.

 

What's next?  Why did I even ask?

Well they are suppose to give the money back if the business didn't do as they promised.

These kinds of stories deserve widespread distribution and discussion. This shows that the major metropolitan areas in the state are not laggards, and can hold their own against the best in the world.

Ohio Lt. Governor Lee Fisher wants to identify the state’s first innovation hub by the end of 2009, a move that could re-energize long-standing local initiatives aimed at creating jobs from the region’s robust industry clusters and research discoveries.

 

The Ohio Hubs of Innovation and Opportunity (OHIO) program would create at least a dozen targeted investment zones near research centers and universities across Ohio. There, young companies would have access to talent, investment capital and business advice...

 

Interesting ...

I love the way Ohio has so many different urban areas.  But this is one of those times when it would be nice to just have a Chicago instead.  Hopefully by competing with ourselves we can develop some unique niches.

 

Whirlpool to cut 5,000 jobs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Whirlpool Corp. said Tuesday it will cut about 5,000 jobs by the end of 2009 because of the global credit crisis and its expectation for continued reduced demand in North America and Europe.  The nation's largest home appliance maker also reported that its earnings fell 7 percent during the third quarter on lower global unit volumes and higher material costs.  Whirlpool lowered its earnings outlook for the year.

 

The job cuts include positions being eliminated from plant closings that the company already announced this year along with new reductions taking place now and through the end of next year.  Whirlpool, whose brands include Maytag, KitchenAid and Jenn-Air, said it has 73,000 employees worldwide.

 

Since January, Whirlpool previous announced the closure of four plants in LaVergne, Tenn.; Oxford, Miss.; Puebla, Mexico; and Reynosa, Mexico - a loss of about 2,000 jobs.  The company said it also will shutter its facility in Jackson, Tenn., and shift production from there to its plant in Findlay, Ohio, eliminating about 500 positions.
