No. We (AAO) do not yet have that capability. We’re trying to figure out if there’s a way we can do it, but so far it appears that those platforms are outside of our budget. February 20, 20241 yr Hello Rail Supporters, Please join our next AAO Northeast Chapter meeting on Wednesday, February 28 at 5:30pm at Forest City Brewery near the Red Line Ohio City Station. We will discuss the latest information available on the current federal programs to fund passenger rail. The Federal Railroad Administration recently released the next update on the Long Distance Rail study. Feel free to arrive early, grab some delicious appetizers, and mingle before the formal meeting. As an optional bonus after the meeting, some of us will ride the Red Line over to Tower City and back so that we can use the old Shaker Line platforms in Tower City. Westbound Red Line vehicles are using those tracks and platforms (on the other side of the north wall of the main station) to accommodate track work on Track 13. I believe this is only the third time the old platforms have been in use in the last 30 years. Some rail advocates are pushing the city to consider returning passenger rail to Tower City, and those Shaker Platforms provide key infrastructure to enable that possibility. 2135 Columbus Rd, Cleveland OH 44113 Please register for the event on AAO's website: https://www.allaboardohio.org/event-details/aao-northeast-chapter-happy-hour-2 When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

March 6, 20241 yr Hello Ohio Passenger Rail Supporters, Thank you for your advocacy. The Federal Rail Administration Long Distance Passenger Rail Study recently released an update and has requested feedback by this Friday (March 8). In the last round, they only received 2000 total comments, so if enough of us submit a note we can have a significant impact. Ohio was well represented with both east-west and north-south proposed long distance routes, but Cleveland and all of northeast Ohio were not included on any proposed routes. Learn more about this recent update by clicking here. Please consider taking a moment to copy the below text template, edit it to your preferences, and email it to the study team to provide feedback about the need for more service in northeast Ohio. The Long Distance Rail study is separate from the Corridor ID program which has recently funded feasibility studies for the 3C+D (Cleveland-Columbus-Dayton-Cincinnati) and Cleveland-Elyria-Sandusky-Toledo-Detroit passenger rail routes. On a separate note, please join All Aboard Ohio's statewide Zoom call this Saturday morning for an update on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad proposed extension to downtown Cleveland. Click here to register. Thank you! EMAIL TEMPLATE FOR FEEDBACK ON LONG DISTANCE RAIL STUDY Email address for feedback: [email protected] Subject: Ohio Long Distance Routes Recommended text for most Ohio residents Hi, I am a resident of Ohio and I wanted to submit my comments on the proposed Long Distance Detroit - New Orleans, New York - Dallas, and daily Cardinal routes, especially concerning service to Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Toledo Ohio. Our state is currently underserved by the US passenger rail network, and these proposed routes would go a long way towards connecting our state and region. Thank you ********************** Recommended text for northeast Ohio residents: Email address for feedback: [email protected] Subject: Ohio Long Distance Routes - please include Cleveland! Hi, I am a resident of northeast Ohio and I wanted to submit my comments on the proposed Long Distance routes. The most important thing for me is more frequency and daytime service for Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is currently the most used Amtrak station in the state, even though it is only served in the middle of the night. Imagine the ridership with daytime service and more frequency! Please consider splitting the proposed New Orleans - Nashville - Ohio - Detroit route in Columbus and sending half of the train to Cleveland. Please increase frequency on the Lakeshore Limited, better connecting northern Ohio with Chicago, upstate New York, NYC, and Boston. Please increase frequency of service between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, including a station in Hudson, OH to serve Akron. Thank you for including the east-west service through Ohio from NYC and Pennsylvania to Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Dallas. Please consider more ways to connect Northeast Ohio to this service. Our state is currently underserved by the US passenger rail network, and these proposed routes would go a long way towards connecting our state and region. Thank you, [YOUR NAME] ***************** For reference: When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

April 2, 20241 yr While looking for information about Ohio's applications for this year's round of CRISI grants I noticed this letter in the meeting pack for ORDC's March meeting: Quote Understanding the constraints of the Federal Railroad Administration’s directive with the long-distance train study, I would respectfully request the FRA reconsider the routing for the Dallas-Ft. Worth/New York route, specifically the routing in the State of Ohio. The Ohio Rail Development Commission’s position is that the previous considered route, Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Columbus, better aligns with the following: The Federal Railroad Administration Midwest Plan which identifies Cleveland-Pittsburgh as a priority route; Amtrak ConnectUS plans; The State of Ohio’s priorities for Corridor ID; and The existing conditions and connectivity of the rail network In summary, because further study will require considering alternatives, for the reasons listed above, it is the Ohio Rail Development Commission’s position that the final routing decision will better align with the Pittsburgh-Cleveland routing after further analysis. Using this routing as a starting point rather than an alternative will save significant time and effort to develop this corridor at a future time. All things being equal, I'd rather the NYC-DFW route head through eastern Ohio but I understand that the quality of the track might make it prohibitively expensive. I'm curious if AAO would be taking a position on this as well.
April 3, 20241 yr Some of us current and former AAO folk have had an interesting debate about this. My take is that, in the long run, especially when combined with multiple daily corridor trains between Columbus - Steubenville - Pittsburgh, this is the best route for that single long-distance train. Until that happens, it may be prohibitively expensive to bring that route up to passenger train standards for a single daily round trip. A Pittsburgh - Columbus routing via Cleveland may be as fast or faster and cost less money to bring up to passenger train standards since 215 of its 280 miles already is up to passenger standards. And it's a way of introducing passenger rail to the 3C Corridor without it being wholly dependent on the whims of the State of Ohio. September 13, 2024Sep 13 All Aboard Ohio: This Saturday we will host our monthly statewide call on Zoom at 10am. We’re switching gears from our usual focus on passenger rail to highlight another important aspect of public transportation: "Pedestrian and Bicycle Transit." While rail is at the heart of what we do, we believe in advocating for all forms of public transit, including non-motorized ways of getting around. We’re excited to welcome Cincinnati City Councilmember Mark Jeffreys, who will talk about the Red Bike program and the efforts that helped save it. Plus, Yay Bikes! Board President Brian Estabrook will share the inspiring vision behind their organization and the transformative changes they're championing for Central Ohio’s transit future. February 28Feb 28 Central Ohio friends - would you like to see more passenger rail in Ohio? Please join me this coming Wednesday evening, March 5, at the Ohio Statehouse for a reception from 5-7pm to conclude All Aboard Ohio’s day of advocacy. March 15Mar 15 All Aboard Ohio's Passenger Rail Day of Advocacy at the Statehouse on March 5 was a tremendous success. Our team met with 54 legislators and aides as we presented the case for additional investment in passenger rail - more than a third of the Ohio legislative delegation! This blog post summarizes the day: https://www.allaboardohio.org/posts/meetings-with-lawmakers-positivity-for-ohio-passenger-rail This blog post includes a pdf of the beautiful handout that we distributor to legislators during our meetings: https://www.allaboardohio.org/posts/all-aboard-ohio-to-host-passenger-rail-day-of-advocacy-at-statehouse And here is a recording of the AAO statewide meeting on Saturday where Mitch (board president) provided an overview of the event: We were pleasantly surprised by some of the elected leaders who expressed support. I've never done anything like this before and it was quite an experience. (Especially with my group being Annie Pease from the county, newly nominated city of Cleveland planning director & RTA board member Calley Mersmann, and Andrew Bean from NOACA. It was very cool to get to know all of them!) We still have a long way to go, and support from the Senate will be much more difficult than support from the House, but overall it was a wonderful step forward in our efforts to bring better passenger rail to Ohio. Please consider joining AAO to support our advocacy for more transportation options. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?
March 19Mar 19 Our next All Aboard Ohio Northeast chapter meeting will be this Thursday, March 20, at 6pm as a Zoom-only session and I think people from all over Ohio might be interested. I will talk about the North Carolina passenger rail program and how it is a great model for service in Ohio with five daily trains each direction connecting the three largest metro areas in the state (Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh/Durham), as well as several long distance services passing through the state. North Carolina sees 10x the Amtrak ridership of Ohio despite having a smaller population. Please join us to learn about this successful American passenger rail service!
